Always does. Puts me off, despite having previously bought a couple of recert 2TB drives.

Purchased one of these just over a year ago and it’s just failed, they wouldn’t replace. I would be cautious tbh.

    Worrying, was it used much?
  3. somy69pk's avatar
Had one before and it failed one month after the warranty expired..never bought these ones after...

    Congratulations on your 1st deal

just get a USB C hub. It's a mechanical hard drive, you'll never get the full USB C anyway.

Heat added - great first post, perfect drive for Xbox/PS consoles! (I'm still using the 5TB ones I got for £70 on the Currys deal)

Ordered, thanks for post, this is my second 4TB recertified and they work great for recording TV from my humax freesat box.
    stec77's avatar
Can’t the Humax boxes only take a 2Tb drive? I personally have a Humax FVP-4000 freeview box that I’ve upgraded to 2Tb. If you’re transferring the data from the internal drive to an external, then I thought Full HD content was encrypted? Thanks in advance.

How easy is it to get a USBC cable version? Adapter?

Also, would TCB work? topcashback.co.uk/wd-…pe/ (edited)

Quidco tracked £1.95 for me, payment in Nov, but don't know if I'll get it as I used a discount code!

They never have the recertified My Passport's anymore. Annoying.

    Are these reliable?
    aLV426's avatar
No hard drive is - if you are relying on a hard drive to keep your data secure you are doing it wrong...
  12. Sphere's avatar
Can you rip the drive out of these and use it as an internal?
    intown's avatar
Not in my experience. These models have the USB interface integrated onto the motherboard. So there is no SATA interface as such.

    Higher price per TB.

I have the Humax HB-1100S and also my understanding was there was a 2TB limit but I connected this 4TB drive with some trepidation and it formatted and has worked flawlessly ever since, it's now 75% full which is why I ordered another. (edited)

Hi . I think you were directing this post to me as I asked about the Humax recordable boxes but you didn’t directly reply to me. I’m surprised that the 4Tb drive would work as I thought the limit was 2Tb! Also I’m under the impression that this is a 2.5” drive whilst the Humax box originally takes a 3.5” drive. Did you have any problems with this size difference? Maybe the 2.5” drive is rattling around the box? Thanks in advance.

Apart from Maxtor(who were known for failing drives) WD are the only drives I've had that have failed on me.
Wouldn't trust a new one never mind a ...ahem recertified drive (read used, failed, repaired and formatted ). Who knows how much use the drive has had?

Incidentally I've recently bought a used 2TB HGST drive for £14 from eBay.
(Yes I'm aware WD now own Hitachi Storage)
This drive is 6 years old has done 56,000 hours and working 100%.
However as it's an enterprise drive it's rated for over 2,000,000 hours. So plenty to go yet!

As it supports SMART I have SMART software monitoring the drive.

Even though it's not infallible I would suggest anyone else does the same.
I wouldn't rely on Windows. (edited)

To what end? All drives fail, that's why backups are important (if your data is!)
  16. ryouga's avatar
The only hard drives I have had outright fail on me was a 4tb Seagate 10 years ago after I did a full format when I bought it new, it refused to work after that.

I had a Western Digital drive die but that was 24/7 connected to a external hardrive and router for file access and it started clicking and not reading after about 2 years.

Only other drive that I would say died was in 2008 I knocked out a sata cable when the drive was on that stopped the drive being recognised so that was user error.

    I have a 12 and 8th Refurb 24/7 no isses

Very good price but can’t get payment to go through on website and getting error messages. Perhaps it’s a demand thing

is the SE portable better or worse than the regular portable?
    jungleboy123's avatar
i googled that yesterday and couldnt find anything. Apparently the SE got some extra software bundled in it. We'll ill probably format the drive so its gonna go.
  20. PRENDY's avatar
Silly question but can you install windows on this drive for a docked steam deck
    ashyt16turbo's avatar
Is there anything you can't install windows on?

Had 5TB one from way back. It eventually gave up the ghost. probably to do with the tons of writes from small to large as was my Launch box drive! had to start again from scratch (had saved Launchbox back ups xml etc ) but no games. painful.
  22. jungleboy123's avatar
Every WD drive i have bought has failed. Knowing this i ended up ordering again lol...
