Went to matalan today and bought some bits was in a hurry as it was my lunch time and only had 30 mins and got home and found young lad hadnt taken off the security tag off one of my items.

So now gonna have to make a special trip to get it taken off which is 15 miles away so 30 mile trip will cost me more in petrol than in the item. Anyone know of any ways to get it off please.

Only the shops can take it off

go to another shop where you know the guy at the till, get them to remove if it's the same type of tag. done that before to save myself a 500 mile trip :)

There is a similar thread here

I would just take it back; make sure you don't forget the receipt.
#5
Go to another shop locally ask them show the receipt for proof that you bought the item.
#6
drill it.
#7
Fire might work. Make sure you dont catch the item alight

Taking to store with receipt is the best way

it's called stealing

stop it

Very strong magnet and pliers I would think as when I worked in a clothes shop as a wee bairn the gizmo to remove the tags was just a magnet glued to a desk!

Probably didnt buzz because their dye tags not the other ones. As for taking them off without ruining what you bought.. I dont have a clue.

15 miles away in 30 mins :|

15 miles in 30 mins = 30mph Average

Only worth risking it then with high value items oO:{

I had this with House of Fraser. I bought a top online and they posted it to me with a security tag on. I phoned them and they said to bring it in, sure, like it was all so easy to stroll red-faced through the scanners :( Even worse I utterly forgot about it once I got into town and walked into Debenhams, who DID want to check my bags, and I had to tell the security guard the whole story, showing him the invoice.

He was very kind and took the item into Debenhams to remove the tag for me :)

I don't know if I'd risk getting it off. So long as you have the receipt and they do it for you, you could be angry and maybe get a discount to offset the travel cost.

Happened a few times, usually if you buy loads the tag will not set off alarm as masks it. Actually happended other day for a christmas gift, had to go back to store (TESCO) anyway as was buying somthing else, didn't have receipt but chanced it with girl on the till as i was spending quite a lot and she removed it for me. Happened a while ago in Republic and i didn't have receipt ( honestly i usually do keep em) Knew exactly when i bought it, time, day, description of girl on til and everything but had to wait 10-15 mins until manager went through computer upstairs to check all transactions for that day to prove i bought it. Both items were very delicate so decided best way was for store to remove it, Wee tip anything in TESCO that was originally £10 or more will have a tag on it so i know to look now, sometimes there are more than 1.

If you don't have receipt credit card / bank card statement is proof, or they could always check the computer for sales that day, more helpful and quicker if you know date and rough time of purchase.

Most stores want you to return to store at your own cost, but I would phone up and speak with the manager and tell then that you want reimbursing your fuel / parking costs due to the distance you have to travel etc. Only twice have I had to deal with this and on both occasions the store manager gave me £10; this was Debenhams and a independent designer clothing store.

Happened to me in Canada last xmas, I was setting shop alarms off all over the mall without realising. I only realised after the the 1.5 hour journey home :(

Happened to me before with H&M, they paid back my bus fare too.

Used to happen a lot with T.J.Hughes, mostly we caught it when we were leaving the shop but once I got a £8 sweatshirt home (expensive one in sale) and had to take it back. It cost me £3 in bus fares and I was very annoyed. The staff couldn't give a damn, they just shrugged and admitted it happened all the time. I asked to speak to a manager and was told he was at lunch and wouldn't care anyway.

Can't imagine how they got into so much financial trouble...............;)

just use the strongest magnet you can find it should lift the clip inside and slide apart

How about a pair of side cutters between the pin end and tag should have enough room to snip it off.

i had to take the item back and as it was a present for someone had to get a refund as already had replaced it. i did try and complain but the lady just said oh it was just an oversight. yes an oversight that cost me £4 in petrol when the item was only £1.50

Be careful, most of the tags are loaded with dye.

That's what I said I dont think anyone is listening, anyway how did your balloon marbles go, mine didn't work out most of them burst and the ones that were left didn't freeze ended up throwing them away this morning, very disappointing. :(

surely 9 degrees is warm enough to go outside and try?

Normally a fairly powerful magnet does the trick too

I bought a pair of boots from F&F and came home with the tag still on! This one has the wire holding the security tag on. I'm surprised the security alarm didn't go off!!
