How do I get a V5 logbook??

When you buy a pre-reg. vehicle, it is normal practice for the 'firm' to hold onto the V5 for 3-6 months. I think it has something to do with tax advantages (but don't quote me).
To put a private plate on this vehicle would be long winded. Briefly, you would have to put the 'firm' as a nominee, but you would need to get their approval. When you are the registered keeper of the vehicle, you would need to have the nominee removed & transferred back into your name.

It is wiser to wait. You would NOT be able to apply for the logbook if the other company is still trading.

As long as you have a receipt for the vehicle & you are not connected with the motor trade, you would own the vehicle, even if it was later found to be stolen as long as there was no fraud involved.

Unless you have the V5 you do not own the vehicle, sounds like you've been conned

I would imagine the leasing company own the van until the terms have been met, So I would imagine you'd have to get their consent or have them sort the private plate on your behalf.

Not true, you can be the owner and not the registered keeper, and vice versa. The V5 only states you are the registered keeper, nothing more or less.

No, Some hire purchase agreement's own the car until the finance as been paid etc..

yes the chap said if I just applied for a new logbook they would not contest this when contacted by dvla

I think they buy in bulk then sell them on but keep the V5 for ten months to make it look like they needed the vans. I have a reciept of purchase of the van so I own the van but not the keeper, could I apply to become the keeper?

Sounds unusual to me - if you buy a car outright then you should have been handed the V5 - there's no reason for them to keep hold of it at all.

Did you do any kind of credit checks on the van before you bought it? It MAY be possible that they haven't actually got the V5 because it's a stolen vehicle???

I don't know then. I've just never heard of buying a car outright and not being given the correct documents with it. It would also be ringing bells in my head that if they were a reputable company doing things as they should be, why are they hanging on to V5's trying to pretend they have the vehicles in their posession longer than they actually do (or whatever reason it was that you said you thought they were hanging on to them for). Hopefully, someone more in the know will read this thread and give you a better idea of what's what.

Thanks for that, sounds complicated but there again any tax loophole will be, will phone them again to get some help with changing the registration
