Ryanair cabin baggage allowance cuts November 2018 – what you need to know

For the second time this year, Ryanair have introduced a new change to their baggage allowance policy. We’ll take a look at how this will affect Ryanair’s customers.

What are the changes to the current Ryanair baggage allowance?
Currently Ryanair offer its Non-Priority customers a small carry-on bag (to be taken into the cabin) and a larger piece of luggage (to be checked in the hold at the gate) both of which are included in your ticket price:

  • A small bag – such as laptop bag/handbag, maximum size of 35cm x 20cm x 20cm, no weight restriction.
  • A larger bag – 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, 10kg weight limit.

From NOVEMBER 1st 2018, this will change and people booking flights with Ryanair as Non-Priority customers will not be allowed the larger bag. You will only get to take a smaller bag free-of-charge onto the airplane which will be stowed under the seat in front of you:

  • A small bag - maximum size 40cm x 20cm x 25cm, no weight restriction.
What does this mean for Non-Priority customers?
You have two options and both will cost you money unless you can make do with a small bag for your trip:

  • Pay for Priority boarding- This will allow you take a small bag and the larger 10kg bag straight onto the airplane without having to check-in any luggage into the hold. Priority boarding currently costs £6 at the time you make your booking, or you can add it later at any point before your flight for £8.

  • Pay for your bag/s to be checked into the hold - You will need to check your luggage in at the Ryanair check-in desk at the airport. If you are non-Priority then a 10kg bag will cost you £8 to check into the hold at the time you make the booking, or £10 to add this later at any point before your flight. (This new bag option is available to purchase from the 1st September 2018 for travel on or after 1st November.)

If you want to take a larger suitcase then a 20kg bag currently costs £25 to check-in.

****Remember this is an each-way price, so a return flight with Ryanair will cost you double these prices!****

Shall I just pay for Priority if it works out the cheapest option?
Well yes, it does seem that way but sadly there is a catch! Ryanair couldn’t offer the whole airplane priority boarding as it wouldn’t make any sense that everyone could jump the queue and be the first to board. Therefore, Ryanair only offer 95 maximum priority boarders per flight. As it’s being offered on a first-come first-served basis you would be wise to think about making your booking as soon as possible if you want to grab priority boarding. Once they are all sold, you will need to pay the higher rate for checked-in baggage.

I’ve already booked flights after November 1st as a non-priority customer and I need to bring luggage, what do I do now?
You have the options of adding priority boarding (if there any still available on your flight) at the cost of £8 or you can pay £10 to check a 10kg bag into the hold (each way). If you arrive ready to board with a 10kg bag and haven’t purchased priority boarding you will be charged £25 at the boarding gate and your bag will be put in the hold.

****EDIT 19/09/18
Ryanair has backtracked on this slightly and will now allow passengers who've already booked flights to check in a 10kg bag for free. You'll need have flights booked from Thursday 1st November onwards and to have booked by the end of August 2018. You'll need to take your bag to the bag drop off before you go through security to check it in*****

I’m travelling with my baby, what about her changing bag?
Ryanair states that you will be allowed to take a small baby bag of up to 5kg for infants up to 2 years old in addition to the small bag you can bring onboard the aircraft.
