I love the fact that people vote this cold because it has something to do with Apple.

I'm an Apple user, but you won't find me searching out Microsoft or Android deals and voting cold to gain some measly sense of satisfaction.

    Get a life!

It's brilliant for Instagram too. Take the plunge, don't be afraid.

The integration with iOS 8.1 is fantastic. I've been on Yosemite and iOS a while and no other platform comes close. This is the real power of Apple. Yer pays yer money...or not in this case, yer takes yer pick.

This is what consumer oriented computing is all about, not tech specs.

Mavericks, released this time last year, was the first time the update was free.

    Forgot to say thanks OP!
Was actually debating whether or not to download the beta version yesterday! I'll just download the final version now :)...though I don't see any changes except for the flatter icons! I don't have an iPhone so the phone integration apps are pointless for me!

Is this permanently free or will they start charging after a while?

One off download, then you can keep it forever!

Oh Apple users, I hope you enjoy this "free" download.

    We will. Cheers!

    Under what law exactly?

The fact you would be breaking a EULA states it mustn't be installed on anything other than Apple hardware.

It was only free from a certain point. The past have been a small fee.

Probably not a coincidence, more demanding software putting strain on a older machine, like any organisation who might want to "encourage" their customers to upgrade.

I found it fine, whereas my MacBook is late 2013. Not got this one yet though, will wait till i'm home and connected to the weefee.

I don't think it works between any Mac and iOS regardless of the year.

iOS to OS X airdrop is capability that has been added to yosemite and iOS 8.

Thanks for the heads up OP. I've just done my first "hackintosh" install using this and so far all has gone well, other than no sound on my GA-Z77M-D3H skt1155 mobo. I'm just using the onboard intel HD3000 hdmi graphics and audio. The display is great, full 1080p on my 40" Samsung tv with no mucking about with kexts or whatever.

To install the free software users will have to sign up using Apple’s site, as well as have a Mac computer with OS X Mavericks 10.9 installed with at least 2GB of memory and 8GB of free disk space. (Although I'm sure the Mavericks requirement will be overcome with a little work).
