Correct. But if you want the app and add other products to it like light bulbs and power sockets etc then you do. Defo worrh investing in the hub also
Yes you do.
The hub is what makes it Alexa & Google compatible.
The context to this is a change in law enacted in 2018 that requires all new central heating systems to offer 92% or better energy efficiency. Gas boiler technology design has peaked at 89% efficiency and it is not possible for a new system to offer 92% efficiency without controls that enable the modulating function of the boiler. So, for example, an Opentherm modulating boiler with Opentherm controls will be able to offer 92%-plus efficiency. A Worcester Bosch modulating boiler with an Opentherm control will offer 89% efficiency, not 92%. Such installations are now supposed to be illegal, are against Building Control regulations and a registered gas engineer should not be recommending them or installing them. I have had a quote for a replacement boiler install from a GasSafe (ie Corgi) engineer suggesting such an installation.
If you are planning to install a Worcester Bosch modulating boiler then you need to have it installed with one of Bosch's own smart control systems, such as the Wave control as they are the only smart control that use Bosch's EMS protocol that allows the modulating function of the boiler to be managed and thus to raise efficiency from 89% to 92% or 93%.
If you want to install a Worcester Bosch modulating boiler but don't want to use their (rather expensive) controls the only option open to you at present is to use a third party gateway device from a Dutch company called Nefit. Their gateway device is a two-way comms device that offers EMS to Opentherm translation and Opentherm to EMS translation. Unfortunately, they are quite pricey, about £60 to £70, so it is likely to negate any savings you might make buying a cheaper third party smart control. Worcester Bosch offer their own gateway device but it only offers one-way translation, EMS to Opentherm at present so has limited appeal.
Congratulations if you have managed to read through to the end of this tome. I hope that what I've learnt over the last couple of weeks is of some use to anyone who may be contemplating a new/replacement boiler installation.
To use it with your mobile yes. Otherwise you can still program the heating module to do its own thing. Kinda pointless but some people don't have any sort of programmable thermostat (edited)
Ah... it's the price without installation. I wonder if people who've got the British Gas Rewards voucher (1/2 price Hive without hub) will get it installed for £75?
Oh well.. it gets installed this week and I don't want to drop the slot (edited)
I have two zones, so yes the boiler is either on or off, but there are electronically controlled valves to divert hot water to the different zones.
They will email you a code you haven't missed anything
Out of the hive installation booklet
You mean does work but takes £40 off £99 not £79
The Hive's thermostat receiver replaces that box of 1980's connected up to the boiler.
The Hive interface is so easy to use, the boost function makes it nice and easy to warm the house up and not have to learn Fortran programming all over again.
Have to say though, the hub that this deal is lacking, does make warming the house up remotely in the car or train carriage, a very enticing part of the system.
Why? It won't work when applied to this
Won’t need another hub. Would personally hang round for an install deal - were around 114£ on Amazon BF last year and most got a free dot with it.
Thinking about it I did through my dad's account as sent him a recommend request so got it for £59
Once a hub has been registered to a user I'm not sure they can be reset with new credentials unless refurbed by Hive.
So careful buying one on eBay.
Thanks but didn’t really help me much. I didn’t get the bit how he paired the hub with the boiler but will need to have a look closer and maybe watch another video
If you got the hub already just install them as normal and use your hive app to add it. Once added you can control from app.
I don't have that level of issue with it to be fair mines fine. But even if it was registered or had a fingerprint. Its a £150 piece of kit for sub £80. Long as you have knowledge on how to fit it it's a no brainer to me.
Once the hub has been registered it can't be re registered to a new owner unless you have the email and password, even with this you can't change the profile name at all. Centrica will flat blank refuse to re set the hub which means you need a new hub.
Did not know you cannot reset the hub, that's a tad backwards in this day and age. But luckily mine was fine, brand new, sealed and boxed just a tear on cardboard packaging was all. Bargain for sub 80 as I say.
I'm sure if you contact Amazon support and explain that it arrived in that state they will gladly honour a new unit at t gf at price. Even though its warehouse it is advertised as new and what you got was a definitively not new!
Yes the deal was good my only concern now is that the hub can't be reset. I'm sure someone on YouTube will have a workaround for that though when the time comes
Only other way would be get a Hub off Flea bay I got one for £15:00 and used the RAF discount with free dot total cost £75
You will need a Hub as well or a Hive 360 speaker
You do, but British gas rewards were giving them away last year.
I only ordered last week, thought I was getting a great deal at £99!
Depends what you select
The deal price is self install
No just tried it’s still £99.50 with the British Gas reward customer code
I’d like to know the answer to this also, I suspect it will, but then again I’m not a central heating engineer
I think there's more to it than that. Whilst this may be able to connect as an additional thermostat and so be used to help monitor and control heating, say, upstairs as well as downstairs, the heating will either be all on or all off in your house, no? It can't only switch on heating upstairs, for example, unless you've got the ability via radiator valves or something else to do that.
Are you sure? I've only ever set up Hive via app with having the hub and I know, once set up, these can talk directly to each other. So there is a way to get them linked and operating as a fairly dumb set up with the thermostat handling the timers without the hub/app?
damn, never saw that freebie
