I'm 63 and my eye sight is only going to get worse so bigger screens are going to be needed lol.Okay as jkl47 only able to use the 10% new customer discount bringing it down to £341.99But went through TCB just in case the 4.25% tracks and have paid using American express so will definitely get 1% back as well. So definitely got it down to £338.58 and might even get it down to £326.47 if TCB plays ball. Thanks everyone for posting the deal and being so helpful in your replies.

OMG I just aged myself 10 years!!! I'm 53 not 63. Just goes to show you I definitely need a bigger phone screen let alone a bigger laptop screen

A 17" screen can make this a large laptop if it is carried around a lot.

If it is mostly desk based then it will probably be fine.

Note it is "Windows 10 Home in S Mode" and "S mode" is an unusual "limited" version of Windows though you can easily convert it to "normal" Windows.

    More on "S mode" here:

    support.microsoft.com/en-…c85

It seems it is wi fi only so you cant plug in an ethernet cable. I know this is getting more common on laptops but you will get a slower internet speed over wi fi than if you are plugged in to an ethernet cable.

Note your daughters university may have a deal for reduced price laptops. (edited)

Yes but if you have fvck you money paying an over price product/ services is normal. Just because you can't afford Apple products it doesn't make them crap! Go back to your plastic lenovo little boy.

Grow up!!!! What a stupid comment. Not sure about you but I'm in my early fifties and am comfortable enough financially to have retired already. But even I wouldn't waste my money on a very over priced Apple product. Maybe because I'm financially savvy......

    Absolutely good enough.

Processor: Anything with core i3 (up to core i7 or i9) will cover general use.
RAM: Ability to multitask. 8gb is the sweetspot. 4gb is ok for general use and acceptable if you have a good deal. 16gb or over needs to be justified (Photo/video editiing, graphic design etc)
Memory: As long as it is SSD don't worry about the amount. 128gb or over is fine (Chromebooks have less but that's a different story)
Screen resolution: 1920x1080 is sort of what we are used to looking at. 1366 is a step down but acceptable.
Screen size: 13.3" and 14" are probably the most fashionable screen sizes and fit nicely and neatly into many bags. The step up to 15.6" is great for opening split screens etc and imo it's the best (bringing laptop from place to place you can comfortably open a document one one side of the screen and write your assignment on the other).
As someone else pointed out, 17.3" screen uses more battery and is a little heavier. Won't fit into as many bags so potentially a bit more cumbersome to carry around. The extra screen space has advantages though.

This laptop or anything like it would make an excellent present so I'm sure they will be delighted with anything you get.

As shane.allen says, this is running Windows Home S which is locked down to only allow apps from the Microsoft Store to be installed and you are forced to use Microsoft Edge browser. Further, you have no option to run PowerShell, get into Windows Registry or even run a Command Prompt. There are positives though: S Mode takes up about 5GB whereas a full Windows install is around 20GB (depending on the edition - Pro being more beefy), so you get more of that 256GB SSD to yourself with S Mode. Also, due to its smaller size, S Mode is likely to start faster too as the machine doesn't have to load 'Full' Windows.

There's more info on S Mode at the link below and how to switch out of it. Be aware though, you can't go back to S Mode once you've switched it off. That being the case, you might want to keep the machine on S Mode for a while in case you need to return it for some reason (as it won't have the factory default OS). However, the link below mentions creating a restore USB which should allow you to get the machine back to S Mode in theory but I don't know. You'll need a machine that is running of course to be able to reinstall/run the restore.

Yeah I wanted to come back and read this thread too and was surprised how off topic it has become.

Anyway I ordered this for my Mum as she has had a 17" Dell laptop that I bought her for £250 back in 2012 which is now completely buggered. I was prepared to pay £600 this time and wanted a 17" i5 with SSD. However, this deal has saved me a load of money even though I slightly sacrificed the CPU.

    Thanks OP!

When I wrote "you may wish to consider", I think you read "I'm advising you to get".With editing documents with in word, I agree there are limitations. Maybe they would be sensible enough to agree how they were going to approach their projects before starting them, like defining their tool set, responsibilities and communication channels etc.I stand by my statement that the op *may wish to consider* the laptop I posted. They should do their research, understand the limitations of the platforms they're considering and make the best decision based on their needs, I think this statement is implied in most helpful posts people make, but sometimes it needs to be spelled out Also FYI, I voted this deal hot as it's excellent value for money. Solid brand and great if someone is looking for a large laptop.

Or just buy a windows laptop and be safe? My auntie worked at a totally Google centric business but they ended up having to buy excel for all their analytical team. Even excel isn’t fit for some work as we saw with the data size limitations for Covid. I own a Chromebook Pixel so you’ll not find me disagreeing that they are great. In all honesty though I don’t think any university student should consider one. (edited)

Thanks OP got this just now, lucky enough to have a student beans account so £323.99 , is X-mas pressie for daughter . Was let down by ALDI as they never delivered the £299 Medion which was supposedly a great deal too but just 'pie in the sky' for a lot of disappointed customers , though looking back at thread I may have actually dodged the bullet on that one as there are al ot of complaints about the actual product from people who actually managed to get hold of one !.

Yes I totally understand what your saying. But as I have said she can use it from now until she goes to university next September. So great size like a desktop computer screen and if she decides not to want such s big screen then I will take it over as mine and get her a smaller more compact one and justify spending the money by not having to spend on getting myself an upgrade on my 12 year old laptop that needs coal putting into it to get it started

Advance macros for data analysis or even accounting in google docs? Reference management integration with referencing tools like mendeley? I’ve been a chrome book user from the very first one launched in the UK but it’s very poor advice to tell people they are viable alternatives for university. Even the online version of office (or iPad and Android version) is massively limited. I actually tried as an experiment to use iPad only, then chrome book only, and then Linux only, and lasted only for a few weeks. Everyone I know at university who thought the same regrets it pretty quickly. Sometimes it’s not even individual usage but when you’re sharing the information. It’s ok when everyone is using google docs, but the moment someone edits a complex document in that (made in word) on a group project all hell breaks out. (edited)

I’m not an excel expert. Key would be a hyper threaded CPU and at least 16GB or RAM. Ideally with the option to upgrade that so not soldered on. Or 32GB RAM. I got my auntie who does use large data the ideapad 5 with the ryzen 5 4600H when they were on offer on here and the codes stacked. Also I’d recommend looking for at least a 1080p screen (or probably 1440p at over 15 inch) and always matte (so avoid touch screens as very few are matte). (edited)

I totally agree, Anyone who will be undertaking any studies which which has 'mathematical' content which may require them to use statistical software , simulation etc is best advised to just go windows or mac. Most Uni's will allow / facilitate downloads of some really powerful apps which invariably require either of these to function, you can use virtually but not a great experience and subject to IT dept downtime, internet blips etc, rather than running locally.

Can image if you are doing something which is art , humanities based etc you could possibly get away with Chromebook but even then take something like 'Scrivener' (originally only available on Mac / ios but can get on Windows now) was an absolutely Godsend for doing my dissertations / research project for both a BEng & recently MSc . Also can't overstate state need for a Referencing software package for citations etc ( yes, most have an online component but the local app is usually more powerful / intuitive and integrated!), again usually only available for Windows or Mac.

You can download windows 10 iso for free. There is a great free tool called Rufus to create a bootable USB. You will need another windows machine to do that (I’ve tried rufus on Mac and Linux but never seems to work well) or a windows VM. Windows 10 serial is linked to the bios so unless your motherboard goes it will install and register fine. The one issue I’ve had is when wanted to install pro or education and not home, but if you google it you can add a ei.cfg fill to the sources folder on the USB. I’ll link rufus below. It even allows you to select the windows 10 iso version.

    rufus.ie

You can then install the Lenovo software update utility and that will install all the drivers.
