I don't own a car or motorbike at the moment and have no plans to buy one. I'm a named driver on another car policy, but nothing in my name.
Any way I can keep my no clams discount or just let it lapse after 2 years without insuring a vehicle?
I wondered If I could insure myself on a moped or something just to keep it? Maybe hire a car for a day every 2 years will keep it active?

You say you're a named driver on another policy, is it your partner ?
Reason I ask is myself and my partner currently only have one car but we've both got max no claims so what we do is insure our car alternating years as the policyholder with the other as named driver so this way we both keep our no claims just in case we buy another car.
These days it doesn't matter who the owner/registered keeper is as you can specify each when you take out the policy (they do ask who the main driver is though)"},{"@type":"Comment","@id":"https://www.hotukdeals.com/comments/permalink/51354132","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"CharlieCheeze"},"datePublished":"2023-11-04T17:51:09.000Z","text":"You need to have a full year insured to keep your NBD active. To be fair, I've been getting quotes recently for a second car that would have zero NCD and the difference in the quote for 20 years NCD was £27. I suppose that might depend on other factors too, like the type of car.
Driving record goes a long way towards the price you pay too.
*Edit* Just had a thought. If you took out insurance on a car and cancelled within the 14 day cooling off period, maybe, just maybe you might get a supporting letter that when you cancelled it you had 'X' amount of years NCD and that would be proof."},{"@type":"Comment","@id":"https://www.hotukdeals.com/comments/permalink/51354162","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"TristanDeCoonha"},"datePublished":"2023-11-04T17:56:09.000Z","text":"Many insurance firms don't accept NCD earned on one type to be used on another. Just another way for them to rip you off."},{"@type":"Comment","@id":"https://www.hotukdeals.com/comments/permalink/51354565","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"philajones"},"datePublished":"2023-11-04T19:07:14.000Z","text":"I think you won't get away with just insuring a cheapo Moped...reason I think this, is that I started riding a motorbike again a couple of years ago (I also have 9+ years NCD on car insurance and still insure car). My motorbike policy states I have now 2 years NCD. The NCD's seem to be separate between car and motorbike (even though Motorbike insurance knows I have 9+ years NCD with car). So, I don't think you'll win with just getting a cheapo moped - it won't work...I might be wrong..."},{"@type":"Comment","@id":"https://www.hotukdeals.com/comments/permalink/51355409","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"wayners"},"datePublished":"2023-11-04T21:14:48.000Z","text":"Guess I just need to let it lapse. If I buy another car I'll just shop around for the best deal. Insurance for me is only £200 Ish at the moment which is less than when I was 17 on my first policy. I guess it's not going to be silly money if I need insurance again."},{"@type":"Comment","@id":"https://www.hotukdeals.com/comments/permalink/51355980","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"slimy31"},"datePublished":"2023-11-04T22:49:15.000Z","text":"You can see how much it might hurt by simply doing an insurance quote now and not declaring your NCD. When I let my motorbike go I considered buying a moped just to keep the insurance ticking over, but actually the same policy without NCD wasn't that much more. And we're talking a supposed 'full' NCD of 85% discount.
Oh, and as mentioned above, car and bike insurance NCD is separate, you can't use on for the other. When I first started with my bike I had got rid of the car, but couldn't use my car NCD on the bike. Of course, the novelty of winter bike riding wore off quite quickly so I got another car before my car NCD expired!"},{"@type":"Comment","@id":"https://www.hotukdeals.com/comments/permalink/51356202","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"C0mm0d0re_K1d"},"datePublished":"2023-11-04T23:33:12.000Z","text":"On a car.
