I think this is an excellent deal, especially that graphics card!

Yes, I think the price drop and added value of the graphics is to some extent to try and win advance orders as there is a delivery delay and this must hurt Dell.

ok so this is the perfect laptop i want, but do u think theres any chance of me squeezing a bit more out of dell i just spoke to one of there sales guys
and he said he could put vista premium on it for free!
has any one else managed to get a better deal?
#5
What is the difference with this being a business laptop!!
#6
Cheers for clearing that up Guv. Are these vostros the replacement for the inspiron? and if so are the Good?

This looks an exceptional package. I've already bought something else (a Currys recon) but thinking of cancelling to get one of these (4 weeks delivery is a bit of a bind though). Thanks MikeT.

I really only want a fairly basic laptop for my own use, (such as the Vostro 1000's or 1400's) but with a better graphics card for my son's occasional gaming use. However if I take a 1400 and upgrade the graphics, it is as expensive as this 1500, but without the T7100 processor, the 160 gig hard drive and the 15" screen. Equally, you can down-grade the 1500 on the small business bit of the Dell website, which gets you a great gaming laptop for under £500 - but it only saves about £40 compared to this.

I'm struggling with the MS Office bit - can anyone help?. If I don't buy the OEM version at £100-ish from Dell, do I have to buy the whole thing for the retail price elsewhere, or can I just get a "key" for the same price? (I only ask because I didn't consider it when buying the Currys one).

What's the difference between that and this one I found that's £450?

They look the same configuration to me..
#9
they are the same, the one you pointed to is without vat & shipping

The specs above - which match what I see when configuring the laptop - say "Intel Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini-Card"

The product page detailing the Vostro 1500 series:
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/featuresdetails.aspx/vostronb_1500?c=uk&l=en&s=bsd&cs=ukbsdt1&~lt=popup

says "Maximise hot spot connectivity with available next generation Wireless-N Wi-Fi® for up to 5x faster throughput and up to 2x the range when used with a Wireless-N router"

Is that available through a firmware update, or is it that the chipset supports it but some other component doesn't?

Its a different mini card (internal) and is listed under tab 3
Intel® Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-Card - Europe add £11.75

Ive tried phoning them twice asking for discount on upgrades for this model and they won't budge! they would change the opperating system to vista home basic though, and would reduce the cost of the warranty,
But i couldn't even get a mouse or bag out off them!
I tried for the wxga+ trulife display and a 9 cell battery.
has anyone else tried for this deal and got upgrades?
#13
This is so tempting ... I think I might give dell a call to see if they'll budge on the price more...
#14
@ MiKeT

i ordered the 1500 a few weeks ago & canceled that due to this offer, anyway i ordered this offer yesterday morning over the phone & managed to get it for £520 with vista premium & truelife which im happy with but ive not recieved any confirmation about the order yet,the order i placed a few weeks ago i had an email back within minutes of ordering, i had the blokes name & number wrote down but for the life of me cant find it so i cant get back on to him.
i just rang dell asking about my order & the person i spoke to said theres nothing on the system about an order placed yesterday just the order i canceled & then he said i'll just have to wait for the person who dealt with my order to get in touch with me.

basically just wanting to know if its normal for them to take a few days before they send a confirmation out

thanks

I had zero success in trying to negotiate. He just told me to buy it off the web.
#17
thanks manzi, thats eased my mind a bit
#18
Yeah no problem, i too ordered a laptop 2 weeks before and the email came within a few hours but now my new order's email is taking daysss.

this is quite usefull when comparing the different types of vista

I managed to get some discount on vostro 1700. Spent about 2 hours on the phone though haha.

One rep kept putting the price down but couldn't match the £739 I got offered before for £786 online. which is not bad I suppose, better than quidco by nearly 20 quid.

One rep kept telling me that if I bought off her I would be able to contact her directly if I had any problems, little did she know I already had about 5 direct extension numbers hehe.
I got offered free carry case by another bloke as well. So if they don't offer you any discount mention quidco and your 'friend' getting some discount. After that just say you are not happy and not going to buy anything.
#21
And I've managed to get Vista Home Premium instead of Business, no reduction though. hi to manzi as well ;)
#22
Lol Krill i have done the same thing! Whenever i got offered the most out of one rep i would call up another and get them to try and beat it!
#23
Krill,Manzi what number where you's calling? i keep on getting indian sales reps and i spend half the time spelling out what ive said because they don't get my geordie accent!! do any of you have a number for an english sales rep!
#24
no sorry they are ALL INDIANS
#25
Ive just tried phoning again and all i got offered this time was the opperating system changed to vista home premium. wouldn't budge on the battery or the trulife display. i still think it's a fantastic speced laptop for a "santa rosa" platform so i will buy it, but i just want to get something for free in the deal god dam it!
#26
im so tempted, but is it worth the £105 extra to upgrade the screen to 1680 x 1050...... what to do what to do
#27
nooo, they should lower it to alteast £90
#28
the last time I called for a quote the LCD upgrade came to about £70 my system was £800 though.
#29
What number do you phone to try and get them to knock some money off?
#30
First start of by getting them to cut the price by 5% to £501 (as theres 5% cashback from topcashback.com). Explain to them that if you buy online you get 5% cashback and ask them to match the price and ask them to email you a quote. Then call up Dell again a few mins later on the main number and get the new Dell rep to get a lower price and say you will order of him if he gets the price lower than the quote you got. Ask him/her to email you the quote and say you will review the quote and call him/her back. Then call back Dell on the main number and talk to another rep and repeat this process as much as possible until its impossible to get any lower in price, then just order from the Dell rep that gave you the cheapest quote!

This method saved me £100!
#31
lol nice manzi! So you got this laptop for £427?! What number do u call?
#32
Does anyone know what is the difference the above and this one for Inspiron 1520 http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=D4XESS01&l=en&oc=N0815207&rbc=N0815207&s=dhs.

For the same specs the Inpiron one costs £300 more. Is there any thing special with the Inspiron model??

Manual and spec for Vostro 1500 Here
#34
Theres lieterally nothing different between the Inspiron and Vostro which is why Vostro is a MUCH better buy.

BTW i didnt get this laptop for £427, i got another laptop cheap instead.
#35
I just phoned up dell and they arent willing to budge at all on price. Managed to get an offer for Vista Home rather than business or ultimate but I said i'd rather the cashback.

Hes gonna ring me back in 15mins after I've had time to "consider the options" so hopefully he will have something better to offer me!
#36
Gte him first to lower the price by 5% by explaing thats what you get in cashback if you buy online.
#37
Yea I said that to him and he said with this model they cant drop the base price at all, unless I were to upgrade one of the components.
#38
Upgrade what you want the spec to be in the Dell site then minus 5% of that sum, thats how i did it.
#39
i might be going crazy but what evalue code do i use to find this after going through quidco?

I've tried the 305-N0815003 one in the OP and it cant find it!
