Popped into my local Tesco Extra (Shirley, Birmingham) just to see if I could find any of the Nintendo Wii U Lego City systems. They had none but did come across these for £29.

Lots of Nintendo systems going cheap around and with the Club Nintendo website due to close I wonder what this all means...

I think it's fair to point out the limitations of this version of the console:

    No component video output.
    No S-Video output.
    No RGB SCART output.
    No GameCube compatibility.
No WIFI support / online connectivity.
    No SD card slot.
Only one USB port unlike the previous models' two.
Top-loading disc drive can be awkward in tight spaces.
    Games can't be patched.

You're still better off getting a older second-hand Wii in my opinion.

think you're reading too much into the stock clearance champ. I reckon Tesco are simply dropping support for the Wii U and clearing out the 3DS in advance of the "New 3DS/3DS XL" launch next week.

the red wii remote plus and red nunchuk is worth that price alone!

Yes because £29 for a console, Red Wii Remote Plus, Red Wii Nunchuk and Sensor bar is a COLD deal????

An official Red Wii Remote Plus on its own costs OVER £30. The nunchuck at least another £10. And finally the sensor bar (official) are at least £5 (if you can find them). £45 of value at least and that does not include the console which will play thousands of wii titles with no issues.

It's worth £30 just for the remote, nunchuck and sensor bar.

Cold. Purely for the fact these are pointless they don't even have internet capability to get updates for any games that might have had bugs that have now been patched over the internet.

Sega are entering the console market.

I'd buy one for the Motion plus controller alone! 29 quid for that and a nunchuck is a pretty decent deal.

For those worried about the lack of wifi/online capability, Nintendo shut those services down anyway a few months ago

Thanks, is Shirley the same name for the Hall Green Store?

if you're on about the one by the fox hollies then I doubt it. Shirley store is the extra by the m42 I'd imagine.

Got one of these in the Inverness store, they only had 1 left.

    Thanks OP!

Could be a good way to get a sensor bar & wiimote for the Wii U (you can sell the mini console alone on eBay for more than this).
Good luck finding stock anywhere though - goose detector on maximum!

They have them in grimsby around an hour ago when I was there - could still have stock

This or the new 2014 mac mini? Tough choice which crippleware to go for, this is cheaper but I'm scared that whilst Apple made the biggest profits of any company recently, they might lose that crown next year, so I had to buy the Apple. I went for the 4GB mac mini edition as it's nicely crippled with virtually no possible upgrades.

I think it's fair to point out that the market this was aimed at (parents wanting a new gift for their kids) wont give a stuff about any of the above.
Regarding picture quality, modern TVs display the Wii's Composite signal far far better than previous generation

The only reason anyone should need to buy a Wii these days, is to play actual Wii games.
Youtube, Netflix, retro gaming are all two-a-penny elsewhere.

This is the same price as a Wii MotionPlus Controller, so you are effectively getting a free wii for the same price. Great buy for someone who wants to play old wii games, or someone who needs a controller for their wii u and would like a wii as a backup console for older games.

Good robust first console for little kids who don't care about HD and have no buisiness being online. Come on, having a go at this thing is like asking a pensioner for a race. Not everything they make is aimed at you personaly.

this is actually a very valid point. what better way to return to profitability than to discontinue failing product lines and focus on your core offerings.

43 stores I believe it was. A fair few of them would never have stocked this kind of item.
Also retailers will sell off stock they no longer range at a price to do so quickly.
They can only store, display and rotate so many stock lines at once.
Though I guess these concepts are beyond you and most other Tesco haters on here.
  39. schnide's avatar
The Eurogamer review of this unit absolutely slated it. I'd suggest paying a little more for the regular Wii on that basis. This one could be a false economy.
