Can agree no issues here after routing, maybe wifi??

This battery drain issue doesn't happen if you register your nook before rooting.

The great thing about rooting is you can set up a launcher home screen exactly to your needs. As an example, here's mine:

Couple of things to note - you only get 240mb for your own books, the rest is for B&N books which I thought was cheeky. However you've got a micro sd slot and this means books you've dragged and dropped onto this card maintain their folder structure rather than lumping all the books together which is what I prefer anyway. There are some bugs with it, battery on some drops very quickly unless after fully charging you turn fully off and then on. And if you upgrade the firmware have it plugged in to a power supply when you do it, took me ages to find out the answer to that. When I'm done ready I just put it down, I've set it after an hour for screen saver to come on, so there's no messing around turning it on and off.

I love that it has buttons either side so you're not swiping all the time though they can be hard to press sometimes. It gets a thumbs up from me. Glow light is fine and goes very very bright. I have it on virtually the lowest level. But if you don't need the glow-light function and can find one at £29 go with that as it's the only difference afaik.

I agree with you - why should anyone want this over a Tablet. As far as I … I agree with you - why should anyone want this over a Tablet. As far as I can see it's a poor mans tablet

It's an e-ink ereader for reading books, it's not a tablet, nor is it even a cheap replacement for a tablet.

It's attractive to some because you can hack it and run other ebook apps on it, which you can't do so easily with other ereaders. Just because some people want to hack it so they can do a small number of tablet like things on it and be dead pleased with themselves just because they can do it, still doesn't make it a tablet. Anyone who buys it thinking it's like a tablet is misinformed! If you've no interest in reading books on it, just ignore and don't worry about all the fuss.

The battery on mine drains by around 10-15% a day on standby with no page turns

Ive got to disagree with that. i have rooted my nook simple touch and my battery life was still over 50% after a month without use. I think something must have gone wrong with your root. i get less than 10% drain after 5 hours of constant use.

this is the guide I used which uses nook manager rather than touchnook.

Kindle does seem to generally have cheaper books, though not that much cheaper I guess.

Unless you are a technophobe, I really do not see what all the fuss is about having a store incorporated on an ereader. Why bother being tied into a particular online store when you don't actually need to be?

With calibre software and its plugins you can convert between any format, also strip DRM. For my Sony Reader I have bought books from the Kindle Store, converted them from the ridiculously proprietory AZW format to EPUB no problem. You can do the same for the Nook.

The true advantage of having an online store on an ereader comes into play if you have daily content retrieval like newspapers. For buying books, simply shop around for the best prices.

It's e-ink, it can be read in direct sunlight, like a book, it has a 1 to 2 month battery life, it's for reading books. Look up the technology, it's nothing like a tablet that lasts about 6-10 hours and is useless at the beach or by the pool.

argos with there usual price crap though i have to admit, it hasn't been 89.99 on argos in a good good while as it's now £69.99 so only £20 off really

How does this compare to the simple touch, other than having a light?

Mrs topazz and i have a glolight each and use them all the time. Identical to the simple touch model other than the light - which can be easily switched on and off. Never had a moments problem with either of them. The light facility is very convenient in low light conditions e.g. a poorly lit room or when reading in bed. Well worth the extra money IMO but ONLY if you will regularly use the feature. Using the light feature must drain the battery faster then the simple touch but not so we've particularly noticed.

All e-ink screens are fragile and the Nooks are no exception. The ink membrane beneath the glass is susceptible to pressure. I strongly advise getting a cover to protect the screen. The nook official covers are really good. Not worth anything like the £25 list price but they have been popping up at £8-£10. I'd advise grabbing one before they sell out.

At this price the glolight is hot. I paid £90 for mine at Christmas.

Follow the instructions for the GlowLight version. I also have a regular (non-glow) running 1.2.1 too and though the search method does not work, the Google one does.

Starting with the n button go through the following links and pages:

n > settings > Social > Link to Facebook, Twitter and Google > Google Link To Your Account > Need help?

Then on the bottom line that starts "© 2013 Google" right after it is a link for "Google Home" which will bring up the normal google search page, which you can then use to get to other websites.

It is fiddly to get to, and a pretty unfriendly interface, but as said for basic stuff it works.

I bought my wife a NST Glowlight when it was reduce to £69. I'd also seen the mixed reviews for the light on the device, but bought it anyway as I knew that she'd need the light if she were going to use the NST. The light is plenty bright enough and easy to set the light intensity you need for where ever you are. It's maybe true that the light across the screen is a little uneven, if one were being picky, but it's not a distraction and it doesn't hinder reading at all. I haven't seen the light on a Kobo or a Kindle so I can't compare to those. If it were a problem, I'm pretty sure my wife would have told me (!). As it is, she loves the NST Glowlight despite having previously been a luddite in a former life.
