    BIG 4 -
    • EE – Born out of the merger between T-Mobile and Orange, and now owned by BT, this telecoms giant is the largest with around 32 million customers.
    • O2 – Just behind EE is O2, which is owned by Spanish telecoms company Telefonica. It has around 24 million customers.
    • Vodafone – Despite dominating the telecoms market in other countries, Vodafone is third in the UK with around 17.5 million customers.
    • Three – Owned by a Hong Kong-based conglomerate, Three is the last of the Big Four networks with approximately 9.9 million customers in the UK.
    • The above Big 4 own the slices of spectrum in UK and extend it to MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) as per below:-
      • EE: BT Mobile, Plusnet Mobile, Utility Warehouse
      • O2: Giffgaff, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile, Lycamobile, Virgin Mobile
      • Vodafone: Asda Mobile, Lebara, Talkmobile, Voxi
      • Three: ID Mobile, Smarty
    • Now, switch to a service provider based on your experience with a particular Big 4 and its MVNOs in your area.
    • My experience from past 2 years with :-
      • Giffgaff SIM i.e. O2 is - 4G/5G coverage is poor in South West London area - Chiswick, Richmond , Brentford and Hounslow. multiple dropping connection on every Teams meeting or WhatsApp call.
      • Lebara SIM i.e. Vodafone - 4G/5G is a bit better than O2 in the same area. at least 1 dropping connection on every Teams meeting or WhatsApp call.
    • Can't say about other areas! Haven't tried EE and Three. Would like to know if there is a coverage map i.e. a particular Big 4 has a monopoly or own mobile tower or grid in area or town.
    • Hope it helps you to decide better!

Thanks. You've just saved me £1.38 per month. Do you know if I am now entitled to another free extra?

Thanks Op, reduced my monthly bill back to £8 not quite as much data ("only" 40gb instead of 50, but i never go anywhere near it) so not a biggy.

Seems a good deal and probably the best if you exclude piggyback networks

Seems you need to have Volt reapplied, hopefully it won't take 14 days.

Can someone please explain how this works with VOLT? I have ordered a sim but struggling to see how to activate the benefits as it's not showing up as O2. Thanks!

As long as you are an VM customer, you may have to wait 2-3 days before it even pops up under the o2 accounts and a further 2 weeks for the volt addons to show up.

    Website and details is here

If you checkout with this offer, you'll go back to £8 per month. Keep in mind this resets your contract back to 12 months, but if you're happy with O2, it's a great option

50215911-AKStx.jpg proof if needed that o2 are pathetic.I live in a rural area with nearest mast about a mile away. (edited)

You can't really compare it like that since the Three router is 5G with better and more aerials than your phone, and its area specific too. (edited)

Is there any way of testing out their signal for free? I thought I might be able to order a free PAYG Sim and then test it out at home by calling the number from another phone, to assess signal quality - however it looks like the sim can only be activated by topping up. Any suggestions?
    jpwjpw's avatar
    jpwjpw
Not for free, but you can buy preloaded SIMs very cheap from eBay for testing for a month.

Thanks for posting this one - not only reset the April increase, it’s been boosted to 40gb this morning, either 3 months of Disney/Audible and offered 2 months Apple Music for free as well
