I pressed continue at £3.99 after applying the code then checked my order summary which was £0.99, bargain in ell

Then go ahead with your purchase.
You will not see the price being updated to 99p anywhere until you actually buy it, but on the end when you finished your purchase you'll see that the price was 99p. (invoice sent via email, purchase history on amazon etc)
