Now we know "who ate all the pi's"
what a load of BS, XBMC runs fine on it even at 1080p, just search YouTube for examples.
That's because defiantly is a word (with a completely different meaning)
Definately an English error there.
to rule the world.
Hate to bring you bad news but the device is designed to be hard to use on purpose. The idea is you have to learn about how computers really work to use this device, and that this process would allow children to gain valuable skills. Its the difference between giving a kid a set of meccano and giving them a finished toy. The "building it" part is just as much the use of the device as the final thing you end up with.
All those people moaning that this not is a computer for a typical user, congratulations you have stated the obvious.
Got bored of mine after a few days. It's pretty useless and slow. I can see it being useful to like poor kids in third world countries. But to the normal person it's of no use. It's good for getting kids into computing but those suggesting it can be used as a media player are having a laugh. It's terrible as a media player.
Raspberry Pi: The most overrated product ever.
That's not the intention. It's a tool to teach people about computers, and how to code. If you want a media player, stop being cheap and buy a media player.
I have one controlling the central heating and immersion heater - possibly the opposite of doing a cool thing.. I had to buy a few ds1820 sensors and a 25A ssr (not a lot, thanks to Chinese traders on Ebay) - the rest came from the junk box. and the whole thing cost less than fifty quid.
Of course the main problem is that it is impossible to leave well-enough alone. I thought a third order control system would do nicely but things have gone way beyond that. I've got GSI Tecsi IS software running on a PC linked to it at the moment,...and the "few" ds1820s have sort of become ten of them.. oO
To save the time and effort programming a Pi to do that, perhaps a mail-order bride would be simpler?

I assume he meant to put 12000x - I think it came with 16kB (upgradable to 48kB).

I am afraid that is misleading and wrong. If you use a simple wifi adapter like this one, it just works with Raspbian (2012-09-18) - well you have to put the WPA key in of course. And it works perfectly with Xbian (an XBMC distro) - you just have to go to settings and say you want to use wifi (and enter the key etc). It streams video from my NAS over wifi perfectly. I get power from my TV - it has a USB socket for viewing photos (it's a 4 year old Sony, so well before Smart TVs) and it clearly supplies enough power. Wifi dongle and Logitech nano receiver (mouse and keyboard) are plugged in - no need for a powered hub). I control it using an android app on my phone - can browse files on the NAS, on the phone screen.
Half the fun of a computer like this is that you have to put in a bit of effort, and I am not even a technical person. It's a challenge - when you make the effort and succeed, you feel happy. If you want an easy life get an Apple product...

I'm sure there is defiantly a maths error here. I highly doubt the zx spectrum had about 43MB of RAM

Anybody thinking of getting one I can highly recommend it. You'll need a decent power supply (i'm using my original SGS2 charger which works like a charm), a good SD card (class 10 - loads of deals on here for them!) and a case if you want, otherwise just blue tack it to the back of your tv!
Use any of the xbmc builds, Xbian, raspbmc or openelec, then load your add-ons: tvcatchup for live tv streaming, iplayer, 4OD etc and you're all set!
You'll need a little bit of patience to set it all up, but for £40 all in, its a no brainer.
Releasing a Pi2 next year with improved specs all round is a good idea, but to fragment the existing Pi base is not.
Good to see that not everyone is an absolute cock.
Sounds interesting. You should put up a blog post somewhere.
*sigh*
And this is why the UK is screwed and short of engineers....
Not necessarily. I have worked with many talented and skilled designers, engineers and programmers (and plain hackers) who are dyslexic. Properly dyslexic not the "oh I can't be bothered" sort. For some reason, some dyslexic peoples' brains just seem really well suited to programming.
To those people complaining. There are a couple of relevant points. Firstly, if it weren't for the popularity of the original Raspberry Pi, they wouldn't be able to offer this free upgrade at all. Secondly, this is what computer technology does. See Moore's Law en.wikipedia.org/wik…law
If you don't like things being obsolete in a few months, and being replaced with something faster and cheaper, then computers probably aren't the thing for you.
The aim was to sell maybe 10,000 Raspberry Pis over its lifetime. So far, they have sold over 400,000 of them. The Raspberry Pi foundation isn't a huge company like Sony, Apple etc, who have huge financial resources and are used to making millions of units.
The demand for the 512 model is already so huge that Element14 (Farnell/CPC) in the USA have had to suspend orders!

My apologies to rudy691.
The people at CPC kept telling me about the handling charge even though they could see what I ordered. Eventually they did tell me that there was no handling charge on the Pi.
43 MegaBytes of RAM in 1983?!? Are you sure? A computer with that sort of RAM back in the day would be (no jokes here) about the size of a small house.
Wow, with an attitude like that - reality can only disappoint oO
You clearly missed the point of Ras-Pi :P
It';s not designed to be high spec, it's meant to be an accessible platform for learning about computing. Think more audrino .

Power cord! Mine was slow too, hated it and found out the power cord I used was 500mA, got one that has 1500mA and now working quite well.. Installed openelec on it and it was churning through 1080p videos with no struggle. Worth a try?
The pi should be fine as a media server .. if you want some ideas of what you can use it for .. I have been running a hacked iconnect (not as powerful as the pi) for the last couple of years 24/7 as a squeezebox (audio) server, minidlna (media server) and VPN server (so i can use my ipad on public wifi with no security risk) and latterly as a small python web interface to a folder i can add things to to upload to my ipad (therefore not needing itunes anymore thank god) .. and the pi should be perfect for all of this and much more and without the pain i have had of trying to get the thing hacked and setup and properly working
... in terms of media player, all these hacked arm boxes suffer from both licencing issues and the closed nature of the video drivers which mean its difficult to build in comprehensive codec support (licencing) and hardware accelerated video. I would have thought its only a matter of time till you get a quasi armhf xmbc pi with hardware accelerated video and the ability for you to add a codec pack yourself to give it that comprehensive codec support.then you should be good to go media player wise

it's twice as much RAM than any other retailers stock at the moment, for the same price - its a deal in my book.
kickstarter.com/pro…one
Buy both.
.. best just to ignore them .. half of them are the tin foil hat brigade jealous they didnt have the cahunas to do it and the other half trolling chavs ...
