I have tried the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive own the Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR … I have tried the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive own the Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR and now the PSVR. I have to say all are great. The HTC is amazing in terms of freedom of movement but the PSVR is still fairly good. You can move around in an area of about 2m - 3m left and right and forward and backward by about 1.5m but not all games support this yet. The hand controls are great and nice to be able to see the Dualshock controller on others. A massive step up from the Gear VR but not quite there compared to the HTC. Sony have done a great job with the headset which I used for about 3 hours last night. The free games are so great I have not even opened my copy of Rigs yet on that basis this is a very hot deal. VR is not a fad, even if you take the VR out of this, just the fact you can play a film on a cinema sized screed or play your games on a cinema sized screed is almost justification itself. £349 on a new fairly rubbish TV or £349 on something like this!!!! I have heard that you can just plug in an HDMI source and it works as a personal screen - people are using PSVR as screens for their Xbox ones.

I had a very similar journey and evening to you. I own a cardboard and Gear VR, was surprised at the quality leap between Gear VR and PSVR I found last night. I bought VR Worlds, Rush of Blood, Driveclub (didn't arrive - thanks Tesco!) and Super Stardust but didn't get around to playing any of them, such was the quality and quantity of the demos and freebies available. I especially enjoyed Tumble VR which allows very intricate/delicate movements with the dual shock, and whatever the little platformer subgame is with the Move VR freebie.

I think a lot is down to expectation. I'm 39 and a lot of people I know have gone through a similar backlog of equipment e.g. Spectrum -> C64 -> Master System -> Megadrive/SNES -> Amiga -> PS1/N64 -> PS2/Xbox/Gamecube -> PS3/Wii/360 etc etc. so what these modern VR systems offer is fairly magical in comparison.

Biggest differences for me with the PSVR over the Gear VR were the proper head tracking - meaning you can get up close to /examine around objects in game (or peer over the diving cage/through doors into creepy rooms etc), much reduced screen door effect, no overheating/fogging and just a generally crisper display. A lot is down to the content as e.g. the 360 videos I tried last night just look rubbish, but a well thought out game/experience built ground up for VR and bearing in mind current technical limitations is fantastic. I used it for nearly 4 hours straight last night - even if I wanted to do that with the Gear VR (which I wouldn't, for comfort/boredom reasons) my phone would have run out of battery or overheated after 30 mins as usual

EDIT: Forgot to add, I think this indeed the start of the future of gaming/entertainment. It's not that much of a leap between these systems and something like The Matrix, given a few decades development. If you showed a Vive to an Atari 2600 owner in the late seventies I'm sure his mind would be well and truly blown.

This gimmick is not the future of gaming. Why don't people get that … This gimmick is not the future of gaming. Why don't people get that through their head. Even if you dismiss the awful and blurry graphics, the 3DS resolution, the motion sickness, the overpriced hardware and its own separate pool of games its still will never replace gaming on a TV. People like convenience and putting on some dorky looking headset with wires around your neck just to play games will never be mainstream. People are falling for the marketing that this device literally transports you to another world when its just a screen right near your face. Wait a few months when the mini games dry up and Sony forget that this exists like they did with the PS Vita and then tell us how you feel.

Why do you care so much? You don't think it's worth it - fine, move on and let those who do enjoy it.

I would counter your argument though, perhaps the PSVR isn't the Rolls-Royce of VR but given that we have Facebook putting $250m+ into Oculus, HTC, Steam, Sony and most probably Microsoft investing in platforms, it's certainly not going anywhere in the next few years at least. Fad or not, it's impressive, getting attention and people find it an enjoyable experience so who really cares either way.
  8. deleted11414's avatar
To those thinking about getting this - it's superb just get it. Ignore the idiots that say things like juddery frame rates and looking like a dork. It works perfectly well with PS4 and will look even better with PS4 Pro - but you don't need the Pro, seriously. When seated correctly, there is no blur.

To those that don't like the idea of PSVR - get lost and start up your own hate thread somewhere else. You have no doubt not even tried it out. VR is not a fad.

I tried PSVR though in London and it was ****, the resolution was so low, everything looked blurry... I don't get why you'd want to play games like that when you can play them on a nice crisp 4K TV/Monitor. Like seriously try to watch video in VR it runs at like 540p or something stupidly low, you see jaggies everywhere... didn't sell me at all. The thing needs to be like 8K before I'm taking interest... plus the games I tried all sucked, Batman was crap, this deep Ocean one was crap... they were all like 5 min things you throw away.

On top of that the motion sucked, if you put your hands infront of the headset it lost tracking and then you felt sick. If you turned around it lost tracking and you felt sick, in fact if you stayed still it wouldn't track right and your hands would move all over the place and you felt sick.

It was really bad and tbh I tried Gear VR that my friend has and another friend bought the Vive, never used it and sold it on eBay lol.

VR is the next Wii, it's some fad that dies very quickly once people get bored of Wii Sports.... sadly though VR doesn't even have it's Wii Sports yet.

I'm really glad PS VR seems to be doing well and provides a good experience but I find the overall cost to be extremely high for console gamers, it's significantly more than the base system itself, that's an extremely hard sell for a add on peripheral! Plus I think many will be confused that the PS VR headset is pretty much unusable on it's own without the camera (would it have really cost them so much to bundle ffs) and some titles need the move controllers. Can see a lot of disappointment come Christmas, when inevitably many will receive the headset but will be unable to use it due to no camera or move controllers because Sony were too cheap to bundle all the required parts together...

That aside, I am sure I will get it at some point, it's exciting technology but for me the price has to come down (plus the required parts should be bundled as mentioned) and the number and depth of the games has to go up but a promising start at least....

Sounds like you are either visually impaired or didn't set it up right.

I think the idea that vr is a fad is completely wrong. The technology isn't perfect, but neither was the iPhone 1, but it changed the way we did things.

If it continues to improve, the possibilities are endless, and TV gaming could be a novel thing from the past!

Stop. Just stop. I'm guessing people saying 3DTV was a fad were wrong as well? Comparing to smartphones is stupid as a phone is a necessity. Wearing a stupid looking headset looking like a complete dork isn't. People always hyping up these fads every few years then it releases and few weeks later once the excitement wears off its in the closet it goes along with the Kinect and PS Move collecting dust for years on end.

Obviously people are denying its a fad because they just blew alot of money on. People will always prefer to game on a TV as its human nature to want to do stuff with as little effort as possible and convenience will always win out and thats not mentioning the motion sickness, headsets overheating and causing burns on the face after prolonged use and downgraded graphics these VR games have. Its absolutely a fad and don't believe anyone who says otherwise.

Experience is like playing 3D games like Doom and Descent first time long time ago. Really mindblowing experience. My £349 well spent on this. Eagerly now waiting for Farpoint, Robinson, Resident Evil and new GT.My move controllers have been working without any tracking issues. Mostly I've been playing Driveclub using G29 wheel. That's really surreal

My partner is playing drive club Vr with G29 wheel. He is loving it
  29. robtallica's avatar
Had mine on launch day. I'd saved up £150 of Tesco club card vouchers I was able to double up towards the pre-order yonks back. So my only real outlay (beside losing the vouchers obvo) was £50. Well glad I did as PSVR has surpassed my expectations.

I only have (the surprisingly good) demo disc and Drive Club VR so far. Besides the awe (and that's probably understating it) of the demo disc stuff my own favourite experience has been flying down the road in Drive Club with Spotify playing some of my favourite music through my ear pieces.

Being door to door with another car in motion and looking to your left into your opponents window is such a weird experience. Same with looking in your on board mirrors as if you're in a real car. Sometimes I don't even miss having a track map - I can look left or right out the window to anticipate the track coming up after the next bend. And if I'm approaching a blind rise or fall on the track I'm able to lean/sit up on the edge of my seat to glimpse a bit more of what's coming. Yes. It works THAT well.

Good to see the consensus of opinion is extremely positive, we want more support and even more games in the pipeline. I'm finding the functionality, head tracking and all that absolutely excellent. So comfortable. Not had one single glitch in 5-6 hrs of playing. I'm using the standard (MGS V edition) Ps4 console and Dualshock 4 exclusively.

Closest to a negative I've found is the slight blur on the graphics if you don't have the headset in the right position. I'm finding the sweet spot for everything to be really quite crisp (for VR) is quite small. Played again last night and seemed to be finding it ok. Maybe it's just me getting used to the headset.

If you have a Ps4 and the money, get one. You will not regret it.
