Noticed this app is free on the Apple App store, it's a free interactive encyclopedia made with the BBC.
It's a big download though, 1.13gb but seems to have a lot going for it.

How much is it normally?
If you not had chance yet it Maybe worth double checking your side switch above the volume buttons, if it's set in the down position it maybe in silent, which could cause the issue your describing.
The side switch maybe set to rotation lock so it might not be this at all but worth checking.
