(op/mods - you might want to update the main post with this info so people don't have that gut reaction.)

Custom games and arcade games are now free. You can now play as all 3 races for free in custom games, without having to have a friend in your party (spawning). This amount of free-ness is relatively new. I highly recommend playing around with the various arcade games if you need a break from the base strategy game - a lot of them are great games in their own right.

phantom mode is worth it alone

Must say I played Starcraft original a lot, I read all comments in this thread, and still don't understand, is it free or not and what is not free.

Nice may have to give this a try, not sure if its my kind of game or not but have heard its brilliant from alot of people. I fear blizzard games and the addiction they pocess, I shall proceed with caution lol
