STARTS: 15/07/2009   EXPIRES: 14/08/2009

N.B. This will only be available between the aforementioned dates via Microsoft Directly

Microsoft has announced the prices for Windows 7 in the UK. The new OS is currently being put through the beta paces and the final release is due on October 22nd the "fastest global launch of a Windows Operating System ever, according to John Curran, Microsoft's Windows Business Lead in the UK.

So how much will it set you back? Well if you start from nothing but a barebones machine and no previous version of Windows to upgrade, its £229.99 for the Ultimate edition. Business users can get the Professional edition for £219.99. Home Premium will cost £149.99 thats a full 12% discount on the Windows Vista equivalent as Microsoft is mindful of the economic slowdown on tech spending.

There are more savings to be made though. If you want to simply upgrade from an existing Windows Vista package, its £199.99, £189.99 and £79.99 for Ultimate, Professional and Home Premium respectively.

But theres more: Microsoft is hosting a special preorder discount program. Its available, while stocks last, to anyone who puts in an order between July 15th and August 14th. The pre-order price of Windows 7 Home Premium is a far more reasonable £49.99 while the Professional is £99.99. Orders are limited to 25 copies per customer.

If youre just about to buy a Windows PC, you dont need to delay a free upgrade program is starting tomorrow, June 26th, that will mean anyone who buys a Windows Vista machine will get their upgrade to Windows 7 for free.

Windows 7 rolls out in 14 languages (including English) on October 22nd.

this is for the UPGRADE version not a full version, you will need to have windows vista already installed, the windows7 disc you receive wont install on a formatted harddrive, you will need windows vista already installed:( Upgrades often result in problems, its best buying an oem copy and a piece of hardware like a mouse, oem copies are far cheaper.

This is NOT the UPGRADE version. There is NO UPGRADE VERSION AVAILABLE TO THE UK.

This is due to a problem Microsoft have within the EU and bundling IE with it.

THEREFORE THIS IS A FULL VERSION WHICH NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED ONTO A CLEAN DISK.

Microsoft are actually saying it is limited to 3 copies (NOT 25) per customer of each product - so you could get 3 copies of Home Premium and 3 copies of Professional.

Its not that hard a choice, there is only really 3 choices for the home user:

1) Windows V7 Home Premium (Home Basic not sold in the UK)

2) Windows V7 Professional (was called Business in Vista)

3) Windows V7 Ultimate

(Starter and Home Basic not sold in the UK, Enterprise only sold to large companies)
.

I don't really like the idea of paying for it first and then finding out it's a buggy piece of nonsense. Probably best to sit this one out for a few months.

Buy it cheap, leave it for a few months, then install it and download the fixes. Should be stable by the new year

Thanks for the link, anyone know where HDV support sits? On Vista it was only available on Ultimate edition which is the main reason I opted for this on one of my machines but I can't find any mention of it with regards to Windows 7.

Microsoft have had public beta and release candidates available for free.

In the UK you get an upgrade licence but it's a fresh install you need to do as you don't get IE8 with it.

How you get a browser - I have no idea!
