Iphone 'no service' whats the problem?

Hi i went to have a look at an iphone today to buy, was a 3g model, but when an o2 payg sim was put in, it said 'no service' I was wondering whether this was because it was locked or whether it had an underlying problem. can anyone help and would it be worth buying? (was fairly cheap for the going rate)

well it was being sold as faulty, as she couldnt get it to make phonecalls, but could still access the other servcies on the phone (ipod etc) but it looked absolutely brand new, like it had never been used before so i just assumed it could have been a case of the lass just not using the special iphone sim, but wasnt willing to take a chance so i said id leave it a day to decide, so thought best to get some advice!

does anyone know if it could just be because it hasnt been unlocked? dont want to miss a bargain. know the too good to be true saying but at worst i could always use it as an ipod!

if you have nothing to loose, reinstall some firmware and restore the thing, then have a bash at jailbraking it, hell if its as much use as an iPodtouch throw everything you can at it.. If it still all goes wrong flog it on Flea Bay some loon will still pay a fortune for it

ahh sounds good to me! thanks very much for that, i know very little about these technical things. one final thing... what could the worst possible scenario for the 'no service' message be and could it be remedied? that will give me my answer whether to buy the iphone!

The worst possible scenario is that the phone has been blacklisted, it's virtually impossible to get a phone removed from the blacklist and it means the phone won't work on any UK network. Someone's already mentioned this but from what you've said it does sound like it's blacklisted, an Iphone needing a firmware reflash or update normally won't work at all but I can't say for sure.

Shouldn't need to be unlocked if using an O2 sim (assuming this is a uk Iphone)

the uk iphones which havent been unlocked and only work on o2 normally only work with special o2 contract sims or specfic iphone payg ones which have 12 months wifi access, and need to be activated.... or so i thought...

well if it s a 3g its still under apple warranty so send it to them to … well if it s a 3g its still under apple warranty so send it to them to sort it ,it just sounds to me though that its locked or an invalid sim no worse than that, how much is it for sale for that would make my mind up also run it through itunes see what happens

its been offered to me for 180 which would be an absolute steal, but thats only because she thinks it cant be fixed easily, after speaking to her though she knows as much about them as me (not a lot!) do you need a receipt for the warranty, or can you just take them instore. id assume they wouldnt help you if it had been unlocked?

well if it was blocked, then i couldnt do anything with it apart from sell it to someone abroad and not the USA as it would be blocked there too, which is risky anyway with ebay. and for £150 thats still a lot for a 8gb ipod touch which isnt brand new!

id get in on that for £150. Theres ways around it.

Locked Iphone, No Charger.... Stolen? Surely... Check the blacklist, even if you buy it not knowing/thinking its stolen you will be the one that pays the penalty. Also if it is blacklisted, to unblock it is illegal, and 5 years in prison penalty! Just to warn you, they are catching people at the moment!
