Can I Get Sky TV & Broadband Without A Phone Line?

Posted 4th Jul 2014
Hey guys, I'm trying to reduce my monthly Sky cost. It's not mega expensive but just trying to save where I can.

My tv package is £25, broadband £7.50 & phone line is £15. I don't use the phone for anything other than the odd phone call to a premium cost number. Tv wise, I have the Sky+ variety package, no HD etc. Broadband unlimited.

I can't imagine they'd be able to knock much off if I threatened to cancel so I was looking at cancelling the phone line. Can it be done? I've googled it & it seems to suggest I don't need it for the tv but do for the broadband, is this right?

Cheers

Phone line is your broadband as well usually when you try and cancel they give you 6 months free. Otherwise cancel sky and just get broadband on its own then watch Catchup tv and Netflix/Amazon prime on subscription .

I think I'll look into switching broadband providers then perhaps. I don't really want to get rid of the tv as I struggle with freeview in my area plus love the Sky+ element of it. At least if I switch, I could get some cash back via Topcashback or something.

    Cheers guys

I couldn't comment on the broadband, as I use Virgin for that, but I can confirm you don't need a phone line for Sky TV. I got rid of my landline about 15-20 years ago, and have had several Sky boxes since then and upgraded to Sky HD a year or two back, and have had no problems.

you need phone lines for b/b no matter who you are with. the better deals tend to be for those with more expensive packages, I was with them for 14 yes and no offers from them my box was about 8 mnts old. last year I managed to get free b/b 1/2 price line rental and free multi room for a year ( had everything except movies) for only prob is it goes up

    Incorrect.

You can get Virgin Media fibre optic broadband on a 12 month contract - without a phone line, albeit it is a bit more expensive.

Thanks for the responses guys. Think I'm going to look into switching my broadband to see if I can save a few quid, will try Sky first to see if they can offer a discount though

You honestly think that doesn't include line rental? Have you seen the … You honestly think that doesn't include line rental? Have you seen the prices? It's about £2 cheaper than with calls.

It is impossible for them to provide just BB at BB costs, if you take away the line rental from most packages then you would be paying peanuts for BB. However, it does not work like that, because of the service they provide and all the complications involved they simply could not provide just BB without the phone line for the price you think you should be paying.

Hence the reason why just BB is not a great deal cheaper than the one that includes the phone line. It is not the phone line that costs the money but the whole service that comes behind providing it.

I never said it doesn't factor line rental into the price, I just meant that you're technically not paying a separate fee for it - which is correct.

And it's usually a lot cheaper to get BB and Home Phone with them, then just BB on its own, there's always deals around, with uSwitch, TCB, Quidco etc.
