...I decided to contact sky to see whether or not I could blag myself a free hub as a long standing customer, as I read in the comments on the thread above that others had.

Great news! The customer service agent I spoke to informed that as well as the free wi-fi booster offer (which starts tomorrow and runs until 30/01/14) from 26/12/13 (Boxing day) they'll also be offering a brand new FREE HUB, via sky.com under the my offers section.

Really pleased I bothered to get in touch now, nice little touch from sky

I'll post a little snippet of my convo with them in the 1st post below...

WOOHOO, check the small print, is their something in their that ties you to an extended contract, surely sky would do such an underhanded thing? Oh and the wireless of this monstrosity is appalling, auto apparently sets the router to N (but makes no mention of it), with 54G settings being obvious). Expect nothing more than around 20mbps on an N connection while right on top of it, despite it theoretically being able to reach at least 150mbps (realistically probs about 80-100). In short, avoid like the plague, unless you like plague.

I recently subscribed to sky a couple of months ago with sky fibre but I … I recently subscribed to sky a couple of months ago with sky fibre but I received the white box. was I supposed to receive the black one? and what's the difference?

The SR102 (black) was issued from November onwards, in just drops the need for the additional vDSL modem (so 1 mains plug free) and is black instead of white. The white SR101 advantage over the SR102 is that it will not cause DLM to start each time on a reboot (so no speed loss) but the black will

I've just contacted Sky to upgrade to Sky Sports for £1 a month extra for 6 months (£14 pm thereafter) - cool! You can cancel giving 1 months notice so thats an excellent deal. I asked about the WiFi booster and that's not available until the 27th NOT today as previosuly mentioned.

The SR102 will be better than your Sagemcom one

Will it make it faster? I seem to lose connection quite often now (I've had it for nearly 5 years). Any help will be really appreciated.

You will probably notice a slight increase in broadband speed due to the technology of the newer Sky Hub. The older Sagem or Netgear slim dark grey router that you have was not the greatest that Sky opted for. Also you will gain wireless N with a Sky Hub so any network data transfer will also be faster than your old kit

Not by me it wasn't, that's a pic from a google search. How was it a … Not by me it wasn't, that's a pic from a google search. How was it a silly move though? (Also any help on my question??)

In which case my mistake, I thought you had taken the picture yourself :).

Back to your question - yes it replace your existing router, though whether or not it has a big difference to you depends on the style of your existing router:

Sagem 2504 - Dull grey cover, has pimples like a golf ball [56Mb/s]
Sagem 2304n - Dark grey top, shiny black underside, smooth cover [72Mb/s]
Sagem 2504N - Silver top, shiny black underside, smooth cover [144Mb/s]

If your router has a dull grey cover with pimples like a golf ball (like the picture you posted) it's a Sagem 2504 and you should notice a big improvement as this will use wireless N. It will also scan and pick the best wireless channel for your network automatically.

As Sky's new hub (SR102) is relatively new it's difficult to find comparisons to the Sagem 2504N but in terms of specifications they're almost the same.

Yet again Sky gives preferential treatment to new customers, existing customers have to wait till 27th December to apply for booster!
There's nothing like loyalty to customers that have been with sky for years!! Maybe I should start looking at Virgin!

Wi-fi range is decent on the newer Sky hubs - half of the time it's the smart wireless channel hopping that causes the poor reach. Best to change to a fixed channel and experiment with range in my opinion

At least Sky are offering something free for existing customers though! Can't see much reason to complian having to wait until 27th. Anyway it's only worth getting one if you have anything older than an SR101 or have fibre and want to do away with the additional modem

Owt for nowt, the majority of people after this are doing so because it's free. Where's all the complaints on the forum such as "my wifi range is naff." but now since a freebie* has a appeared people suddenly have problems with range.

Once I ordered the free Hub, it said I can claim a booster after a week, also for free. It seems that customers on the old 'G' routers get the free hub offer, and the booster, whereas people with an 'N' router only get offered the booster. Our router is an old Sagam one, with the dimples in it, we got Sky BB in 2009, and have recontacted a number of times and stuck with our old router. A friend of ours has the Sagamcom one and is it not eligible for the free hub.
I ordered it on my iPad, so it may be worth a try to do it on a mobile device and see if it appears.

Ps. If you had tried to order the booster and you got a basket error, it is because it cannot be claimed until 27/12/13

It's happening to a lot of us, seems the offer's only available to some but as of yet we're finding it impossible to determine what this criteria may be? And of course sky are no help whatsoever... I had the original sky agent tell me about the deal in the first place, and have spoken to another who's told me that no such deal exists, despite me pointing him to this thread and the people who have clearly benefited from it...

sky are an absolute f*****g joke. paid 42 quid for a hub 2 weeks ago, now under 'my offers' it says i can have a free one.

tried to phone and speak to someone.. got transferred to some call centre in india, which by the sound of it, are in the middle of a party, people shouting in a foreign language, music playing, sounded like they were in a pub. Woman hadnt a clue what to do, put me on hold for ages then the line went dead. brilliant customer service.

I've just spoken with 2 advisors on the phone who have assured me that I won't be entering into a further 12 months contract by taking the offer of the free hub. I'm still dubious, as these companies usually give you nothing for something! I'm currently trying to use the Sky live chat help (so I can take a screen cap of the conversation) - just in case they tell me in the future that I've entered into another 12 months.
** Just spoken with online chat and they confirmed that there would be no extension of the contract.
    I've just ordered a hub.

Finally managed to get one ordered for myself - I had to get sky to unpick my account, which has now happened, and managed to get ordered. First time in 7 years I've been able to see offers on sky, and do any orders or changes to the account online....

Thanks to safc32 for providing the original info, (even if they can't get the offer themselves).

If you already have the white sky hub the new black one just adds the sky fibre connectivity but not a lot else, it'll be further contract commitment to take up any 'free' offer for sure
