Saw this earlier and thought "damn, if only Scan weren't banned from HUKD.

...then come here and see this. Rejoice! Looking forward to finding some good deals on PC components again!

Remember folks to upgrade the firmware on this to 5.03 from Kingston's website to fix the TRIM issue on this drive:

Then you will be talking about 512GB SSD's for £150+vat. Can we have a break from SSD deals please. Don't get me wrong I think they are great, but do we really need a post everytime they drop £10 or £20.

Can you post a deal for the crystal ball you just used?

Also, would you rather not be informed when products can be bought for less than they were previously? If so, it's quite simple - don't visit HUKD any more.

I thought Scan do free delivery over £50 to all now.

And I've shopped with them for ages, good retailer.

EDIT: Buy this from the TodayOnly page and save 5 quid.

Originally I did plan on getting a 64GB for my OS, but after speaking to someone who has a 256GB who has all his main programmes installed to it made me change my mind, I'll get mine on Friday and install on Sunday when I have a day off and report back, looking forward to my first SSD experience.

I have the 120GB version and it's a fast drive (and looks awesome!) but I should point out that the '3K' bit means each memory chip is only capable of being written to 3,000 times before likely failure (probably an MTBF figure), this is in contrast to the normal 5,000 times that most manufacturers are using. Obviously over the lifetime of an SSD you're unlikely to hit this but if you are thrashing it you could come foul of this in the future, I suppose it's offset by the time it's due to upgrade you'll be able to pick these up for next to nothing.

It's something to do with SSD memory chips being manufactured on a smaller process node (sub-34nm I think). I'll try and find an article on it.

Here you go (first few paragraphs explain it better than I do!):
    bit-tech.net/har…w/1

Also another edit, but the '3K series' are silver/grey drives, not silver/blue like the photo shown above - the silver/blue ones are the 5K rated drives (as far as I know).

Yeh I had read about this, but as you mentioned it doesnt really worry me as 3000 cycles will last around 8 years (on normal PC usage) and by that time i'll have a nice 5TB SSD in its place

Ive had words over another deal on Scan about a PC case that Scan have put on today only twice at 2 different prices, i wouldn't trust this to be the 5K that's why ive not bought it, for someone like me who downloads from the newsgroups if you have the download location set as this drive those 3k writes will go very fast and the whole point of a SSD is to speed things up. At the minute i already have 2 but have been wanting a 250+ for a while to go in my server but i want something that's going to last as its for my server and im afraid this isn't the drive. For the normal user for a few programs and games this drive will be great and last a few years but if you do loads of writes deletes and writes the drive will fail quickly and i don't trust Scans description. In the past ive had 2 issues with Scan that they wouldn't sort till i went on the Scan care at Hexus and made a post which i shouldn't of had to do, that caused them to take notice. At this price im afraid theres only one drive and thats the Samsung 830, with cashback its the same price and is regarded as a fantastic robust drive, if i knew for sure this was the 5k version i would of had one but scan dont tend to get things like that wrong meaning the picture is probably wrong not the description. If it is a 5k version it will be on today only again and i will grab one then, id appreciate someone posting which drive they get on Friday so we all know.Either way a good deal.Hot

So what you're saying is you've decided against ordering the 3k version, labelled as the 3k version, because there's confusion that the 3k version might not actually come as the 5k version by mistake? And mainly because for some reason you'd set a download folder as one on an SSD? If my desk was cleaner I'd find room to bang my head on it

Is there any advantage in having 240gb over the 120gb apart from the extra capacity for a desktop?
Browsing through some of the SSD deals I assume that a SSD is only beneficial as a boot drive, in which case is 128gb not big enough?

I think it's beneficial for everything, just in varying amounts. Any programs you install on the SSD should load faster.

Heat added, this is a great deal, so far the cheapest I've seen (and I've been looking) but I spent my money on the HP server recently advertised will have to wait until I have more money...

plewis00 - The silver/blue is usually associated with the 5K model, I guess the got they pic wrong, happens time to time.

Hmm the picture shows the non 3K series as plewis00 has mentioned.

I think its probably a picture error on scan, as stated above, the 3k series is black and grey and the 5k is blue and grey.... so if we get a blue/grey one its all good

How reliable is the software that estimates your disk life remaining?

I wouldn't mind the slightly shorter life of these as long as I could monitor my usage.

yawn at the mis-information on here about how long these drives last. Should last 8 years + taken from anandtech:

    anandtech.com/sho…iew

    3K P/E Cycles

    NAND Capacity 100GB
    Writes per day 10GB
    Write Amplification 10x
    P/E Cycles per Day 1
    Total Estimated Lifespan 8.219 years

Assuming you write 10GB to your drive every day (on the high end for most client workloads), and your workload is such that the controller sees an effective write amplification of 10x (due to wear leveling/garbage collection the controller has to write 10x the amount of data to NAND that you write to host), you'll blow through one p/e cycle per day. For 25nm 3K p/e cycle NAND that works out to be 8.219 years, at which point your data will remain intact (but presumably read-only) for 12 months. Heavier workloads come with higher write amplification factors, but for client use this math works out quite well.

this is the type of drive im waiting to drop to the £100 mark, which obv a lot of people are. I am slightly tempted at this price i wont deny! Glad the SSD are really coming down now in price, they were just ridiculous for such a long time. Tempted to pick up a 120gb for an old laptop to just give it a boost for messing around with.

I don't think anyone was expecting this to be the 5k version, its listed as 3k in the title on the scan webpage (granted its not on the today only page, but when clicked it links to the 3k version) I download a lot of tv shows so it'll be interested to see how it copes, although I don't foresee it being a problem for a long time to come

When mine arrives on Friday I'll confirm the model (although I'm expecting the 3k)

At the end of the day the general consensus is that for general office and home PC use a 5K can last around 13 years, and a 3K 8 years, personally even if im classed as a heavy user and it only lasts 6 I'll have probably upgraded by then so it really doesn't worry me

Yeah, I've also found that Scan are only good until you have a problem. They pretty much hate you if you have a single issue with something you've bought from them. I try to not buy from them but when I do I tend to look at the items as having the warranty with the manufacturer only.

I had an item that failed within 3 months, replaced on site, no problems.
The item then failed again a month later. When I explained that I was in Australia, and wouldn't be back in the UK unitl a few weeks after the 12 month warrranty ran out, they insisted that I would have to return the item before then. No flexibility.
