I had this problem earlier in the year when I bought mine I was told in the shop that it would not be affected if I cancelled my phone contract. I sent htem a message through my online accout saying if this was not the case then I wanted the broadband contract cancelled. I was phoned by 3 and was told that it did noy matter if I cancelled my phone it would still be half price , I got them to email me confirming this. I am sure there will be a problem as I cancelled my phone contract 2 weeks ago and I am in my notice period, but if they do try to up the price they will have a fight on thier hands

"Offer available direct from 3 only until 30th September 2008 on a new Mobile Broadband Lite, 5GB or 15GB price plan when either: (1) an existing customer on a Pay Monthly phone or mobile broadband price plan later subscribes to a new Mobile Broadband plan; or (2) when a new approved customer subscribes to a new Pay Monthly price plan and a new Mobile Broadband price plan at the same time; (3) when a new approved customer subscribes to a new Mobile Broadband price plan and subscribes to a second Mobile Broadband price plan at the same time; or (4) when an existing Pay Monthly customer upgrades to a new Pay Monthly price plan and subscribes to a new Mobile Broadband price plan at the same time. The new/second Mobile Broadband price plan must have a minimum term of 18 months. Customers will lose their continuing eligibility for the half price mobile broadband plan if they terminate their existing plan prior to the end of their Mobile Broadband minimum term agreement. In other words the two plans have to run concurrently. Offer must be mentioned at the time of order as it cannot be applied later and cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. 50% discount will be forfeited if either contract is in arrears or disconnects from the 3 network (for whatever reason). Terms apply. See instore or three.co.uk"

So Pay Monthly only. Plus if you cancel your phone contract you lose the 50% discount.

I'm more tempted by the Vodafone deal already posted (3GB x 12mth contract @ £15 - £90 Quidco plus free ****** Nokia PAYG phone)

Assuming Quidco tracks, £90 for free modem and 12mth contract with no dependency on a phone contract sounds better to me.

That said if 1GB/month is enough the 18month x £5 = £90 deal is OK if you are sure you will keep up the phone contract.

dont forget £15 raf! I've got a three number if anyone needs it.

btw this is perfect as an additional line, it can't replace home broadband as the ping is too high for online gameplay.

I will probably get the thinner huawei e160g because they have good compatibility with linux.

Personally I'm surprised he could even play that the latency on mobile based "broadband" would be worse than an old 56k dialup connection.

I have used 3 mobile broadband for about 6 months on the 3gb for £7.50. If you are a heavy downloader pointless but good if you only surf the web and are not addicted to youtube (video quickly eats up your 3gb). In the evenings the level of service can go down to the point where you can barely get it to load a page (this will vary from place to place) so be wary. Generally for the money and convience I am happy with it though I wouldn't pay more than what I do pay for it.

No certainly not. I started out well at around 150k/ps (still under but ok) but weekdays it would barely go above 20k, and even then you didn't want to move incase the signal fluctuated. Even with a full signal it was impossible to get anything near old 512kbps broadband. (To make this clear, I had a 3.5g full signal at all times, it just seemed to sometimes work faster in different parts of the room).

Also I had an issue where I topped up £15, went to add it on as 3gb via my 3 account online but constantly got an error. I then called 3 on 444 to find out why. What they didn't tell you is 444 is charged so by calling them I ate into my £15 top up and they said I could only top up £10 now as I didn't have £15, more like £14.xx. Naturally I was furious but they would not budge and the delay on the line between me and the call centre wherever in the world did not help, as were the language issues. It's not made clear that PAYG net topups are ONLY activated on the first my3 page and NOT on Buy Add Ons on any other 3 page. I know this only applies to PAYG but I suspect the same 'help' desk is the point of call for subscribed users too.

I switched to Be and pay £28 pm inc phone for 24mbit u/l. I know the 3 solution offers freedom and no phone, good for say, uni. But try if you can the PAYG first, see the speeds you get. You can always sell the dongle, on ebay mine went for £3 under what I paid for it.

Its worth mentioning if you exceed your bandwidth allowance - you can hit a bill over £1000 without using twice your allowance in some cases.

Look it up to check - the worst I have heard so far was in the £30 000s.

In Dundee, pretty much all areas, I'm getting between 300Kbp/s to 1600Kbp/s, which is great. It's fantastic for surfing, and I even used it in my office for a week to test if it could replace our business line.

Of course, it couldn't, but it was still very usable. Ping time is high to most UK sites at around 120-150ms.

But when you buy your modem with three, you get a few days to return it if you're not happy. If I was getting 150kbps at best and 20k below, I wouldn't have kept the damn thing for more than an hour before going back to the shop!

People really should be aware of what they're getting into when they buy one of these. And the person who bought this to play xbox 360 on...sigh....

People - learn your stuff before you buy it and you won't be disappointed!

I am in the north east lincs area and the connection is fine, no its not a home broadband replacement but it as fast enough to watch you tube without issues. My partner and I wanted a contract each so what we did was took out the cheapest contract first then the following day took out the more expensive contract and got it half price (both in the same name) Only worth doing if 1) you want 2 contracts 2) you cant find it cheaper else where which at the time we couldnt.

You do get a few days but once you activate the mobile broadband you actually only have 3 days to decide - after that you are binded for the full duration of the contract.

Wow where did you hear about the £30k story?

By the way I believe you can put a cap on your account to ensure you don't go over your limit. Something about setting your credit limit to zero.

I got the 3gb per month mobile broadband for £7.50 from a 3 shop when I was in a 6 month contract - only got it because they said I could cancel the phone and keep this but also at half price.

I would say though if you use VOIP - 3 seem to slow down SIP on purpose - Skype works fine but other protocols for VOIP work but with such a delay that it's almost unusable.

I have not been impressed with (vodafone) mobile broadband, the speeds I get are no better then dial up and rarely 3g or 'broadband' even in good areas, and as most providers offer a similar service my advice would be to not take out a lenghty 18 month contract.

With Quidco they do seem to be screwing people over it more now - I got paid for a phone contract but since then Ive had two declines for no reason - saying that quidco have never paid on anything Ive been declined or missed on.

I use mine to browse check email and a few hours of internet radio and its all good

Wouldnt switching to PAYG still cover you for the offer?

Had my 7GB / Month for £12.50 contract for a few months now and had no problems at all. I use it when out and about and can connect to work via VPN reliably. I have only used it in the North West of England but have always had good coverage.
  26. deleted25508's avatar
Absolutely pointless and **** imo my friend has it and havent been able to connect over 4 months due to no connection....he's now trying to get out of it and getting his money back from 3 with help from offcom (i think) all they keep saying is we give you extra month- to which he still cant get on! or it will be on in 24 hours - and of course it aint. DONT DO IT lol
  27. deleted82564's avatar
The speed seems to vary thoughout the country.
Some report a good service others a bad almost unusable service.
I don't like long contracts as prices can change quickly and you are stuck with your contract.
If you go over your limit for the month it can get really expensive.

One good thing about another mobile provider T Mobile they don't charge if you go over but I believe they email you if you do it regularly and suggest a more expensive plan.

3 have a poor reputation for their customer service desk.

I have the 3 max broadband package and am having a nightmare with it. The connection will constantly drop (if it even connects at all), and I live in their high speed area.

The only reason I sined up was because of the £80 quidco deal but this has been declined for no reason. Quidco don't want to know and 3 have told me to report quidco to the Trading Standards!

My advise would be to steer well clear and go with a more reputable company like Vodaphone or 02.

Does any one know of a way to get out of a 3 contract bearing in mind the service doesn't properly work?

Any help would be much appreciated!

One difference is the E160G dongle has a slot to take a micro SD card so can also act as usb storage device.

I haven't confirmed this in the flesh as such but there are instructions for inserting the card on the 3 website for this dongle.

The other alternative is to get a 3 PAYG sim, put ten pound credit on it, spend £5 on the Web-Add-on pack and then connect the phone to your laptop, ignore the T&C's and use it as modem, I've done this for a while when I've needed a mobile broadband connection using my old N73 or N95.
  38. mess0804's avatar
I have the 3 mobile broadband for about 6 months on the 7gb for £25. Have one phone contract from them, but when I took the broadband it wasn't this offer.
It works really bad for me, slow speed, keeps disconecting (and I live in London). I am sick of complaining (they keep me on the phone for about 30-40 minutes each time) and I pay for this....
Can I get out of the contract in any way?
  39. brandonheat's avatar
Go for the PAYG. You might not get as much but at least you are not in a contract. I have PAYG and get p***ed off all the time when a download cuts off and i have to wait for that damn light blue led to come back on. Up to a minute a time for webpage to load. Mate at work says a lot of friends have tried 3mobile and hate it. Give t-mobile or vodafone a try. Cant comment on o2 or orange. Check reception first and if you get a contract, make sure there is a refund clause if the service is unacceptable (there shouldnt be a problem, but you never know with the stuff they throw in small print nowadays)
  40. deleted82564's avatar
I'm using T Mobile (borrowed from my brother) and it's pretty good. In town I get about 500kbps down speed sometimes more and outside in the sticks away from town it's dialup speeds. Connects every time.3Gb a month limit which is OK for emails and surfing but not for YouTube and downloading lots of stuff you soon would exceed your limit.

With mobile broadband the more customers they get the more chance more and more people are trying to connect to the same mast. Unless of course they keep increasing the masts and capacity at each mast.

3 of course has a monthly PAYG tarriff which helps those who don't want to sign a long contract so if they get decent reception might be OK.
Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of unhappy 3 mobile customers out there, especialy their Irish service.
Hopefully the UK service is better.
