Good price I think for a large capacity SSD. Speeds are not as fast as the premium drives but any SSD really is good enough for apps and storage space too these days.

• Sequential reads/writes up to 540 / 490 MB/s on all file types
• More than 13x faster than a typical hard drive
• More than 40x more energy efficient than a typical hard drive
• Available in 2.5-inch form factor in capacities up to 960GB
• 3 year limited warranty

    Gets a slamming on Anand.

"But even being the cheapest SSD on the market wouldn't be sufficient to earn a recommendation; almost anything else would be worth paying extra for."

Write performance is all over the place on this drive, look else where if you are after a SSD.

Read performance scales up in a mostly normal fashion, but write performance is all over the place. ATTO alternates between reads and writes, so the drive was not under sustained long-term write pressure but was nevertheless wildly inconsistent. This test is pretty short, but still long enough for the BX200 to run into trouble.

    Cold.

For an extra £13 you're way better off getting a Samsung Evo 850 500Gb and gaining 20Gb, better speed, reputation, warranty....

    First time I've seen a 480GB below £100 HOT

would be if it wasn't as bad as it is compared to barely more expensive drives

Why Crucial, why? You used to compete with Samsung with ease, and then you produced this

    Samsung and better reputation!
I think not just ask 840 and 840 EVO owners.

Been under £100 and even £80 for most of the month. Not a comprehensive list.

I bought 2 Sandisk Ultra II from Amazon at £79.99 each. They were regularly ~£80 in November.

When the BX released it was significantly cheaper than the competition and performance wise wasn't that bad. But now SSDs have plummeted in price it looks poor VFM. The MX series are the Crucial performance series.

It wasn't really cheap enough to justify the difference IMO, and I'm a Crucial fan.

It's a shame that this hasn't dropped in line with others though. It's just totally at the wrong price point for what it is.

Just for a bit of balance. Also why when reviewing two products that seem to be behaving strangely did (Billy) fail to mention what firmware he was using.

These are using MU01.4. First is more typical of most day to day users. The second is like for like with Anandtech.

Yes its probably still one of the worst drives about and there are better drives for not much more cash. But if and when they are cheap for many people (general users, gamers, content watching) where most use reading from the drive it will be ok.

I wont be buying one. I have not nor have any plans to buy a TLC drive in the near future. Im guessing in the next few year I'll end up buying Intel drives exclusively as the will probably be the last ones supplying MLC drives.
