I've never used Ali express before but looked at a few phones with them. Happier to start with something small initially.
Anything I need to bear in mind to avoid duties?

More often or not they get through duty free.
Do remember it is a marketplace though

You won't pay any duties on items of this low value. It's only over a certain value that they are charged.

I can vouch for AliExpress, used them loads and the one time I didn't receive an item, I was given a refund by them as they keep the money and don't pay the seller until you receive.
I've used them a few times and never had a problem with import tax. Don't go for DHL delivery, stick with the ali express one and you shouldn't have an issue.

When will they take PayPal?.......

Probably never. The guy behind AliEx set up his own payment platform too. PayPal is convenient, but unsafe for sellers.

also on this and the Indian variant of the note 4 the black bezels around the screen appear to be thicker, and if there's one I can't stand on a phone, it's them! I have no idea as to why they are bigger than the original Chinese note 4 but it's so frustrating. it's normally a good gauge on buying a Chinese mobile in regards to build quality

I think you'll find the '4x' is purely just a colour scheme..
oli12345
of the Indian variant of course....
if you want a note 4 but better, there is a version, called, the redmi pro, basicly a note 4 upgrade :)
4X uses the Snapdragon 625, 4 uses MT6797.
There is the 4 Indian version which also uses Snapdragon as Xiaomi can't sell Mediatek in India, but I haven't seen that available anywhere outside India yet.
Redmi Pro uses MT6797 again, so not an upgrade to everyone.
so as I said the 4x is just a limited edition colour scheme of the Indian variant of the note 4, it's not an upgrade whatsoever, the 'x' is very misleading, the redmi pro uses an x25 where as the 4 uses a x20 chip, the Snapdragon 625 is not as fast as the x25. so as I say the redmi pro is a faster version of the note 4 (both versions soc625 & x20)
there is another difference not yet mentioned that being the note 4 is full metal bodied while the note 4x is plastic backed not metal this is explained in this miui forum article there's a nice unboxing vidio in there too which mentions this. link to article http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=511163&extra=&highlight=redmi%2Bnote%2B4x&page=1
the Indian redmi note 4 is plastic. so again, the 4x is a colour scheme of the note 4 (Indian)
Not according to this review link http://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_launches_redmi_note_4_in_india-news-22845.php according to this review it is aluminium backed same as mtk note 4
Both the Indian Redmi Note 4 and the Redmi Note 4X use a construction that is the same as the Redmi Note 3. The main part of the back is still metal but the top and bottom is painted plastic to match the metal whereas the original Mediatek Redmi Note 4 has a metal unibody with antenna line construction. Saying "the note 4x is plastic backed not metal" is misleading. The difference in construction for the Indian Redmi Note 4 compared to the Chinese Mediatek is mentioned in this video @ 0:56. The Redmi Note 4X also has this metal with plastic top/bottom construction as shown in this video @ 3:04. The difference is also visually evident. Here's a side by side photohttps://i.gyazo.com/a05607f8c18de96f3985a517d1acc99d.png
As you can see the original Redmi Note 4 (left) has an antenna line and the top is the same shade as the main body. Whereas the Redmi Note 4X (right) is a slightly different shade for the top since it's painted plastic to match the main body, which is still metal.
Im sorry but you are wrong the note 4x has definetly got a plastic back look at this review off the miui.com forum site link http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=511163&extra=&highlight=redmi%2Bnote%2B4x&page=1 if you scroll down to the part headed DESIGN after the 2 photo's you will see this The Redmi Note 4X, like the Redmi Note 4, no longer has the curved sides that is present in the Redmi Note 3, but rather a little chamfered square edged corner that is present in the Redmi Pro and Redmi 3X. The unibody construction gives your the premium feel in your hands, it is not edgy and not very round, just enough to hold the phone comfortably in the hands. One noticeable change from Redmi Note 4X from Redmi Note 4 is its plastic battery cover versus metal from its predecessor, otherwise, nothing has changed. So you see the back is all plastic not just top and bottom
according to this review there could be a problem getting cases because it says some of the ports and camera and fingerprint scanner are in slightly different placement

Here are 2 threads that ask specifically about the top and bottom.
http://en.miui.com/thread-511863-1-1.html
http://en.miui.com/thread-508497-1-1.html
If the phone is all plastic back, I don't see why would people ask/discuss the top/bottom in particular rather than the back as a whole? Here is a spec comparison of the Note 4X, Indian SD Note 4 and Chinese Mediatek Note 4. According to spec sheet, the Note 4X and the Indian SD Note 4 weigh the same as each other, which is 10g less than the Original Mediatek. That would be odd if you're suggesting that only the Note 4X is "all plastic" but that the Indian Snapdragon Note 4 shares the same metal design as the original. Also when you do a web page translation of the Note 4X product page on both the Official Chinese and Taiwan MI sites, they say "metal body":
http://www.mi.com/redminote4x/
http://www.mi.com/tw/redminote4x/
So if it's indeed all plastic back, it would mean that's false advertising and the Techtablets video in my previous comment is mistaken.
also if you look at the unboxing video in the above mentioned miui review he accually tells you it is plastic backed

Why complain about PayPal, they use alipay which is almost the Asian equivalent to PayPal. Just as safe

I agree, never have a problem when the item doesn't arrive, etc - always get full, no fuss refunds.

I wouldn't buy anything expensive as if faulty you have no guarantee but for cheap stuff like this aliexpress is OK, but probably better to spend a few pennies extra and buy from uk

1 good drill bit of each size is better than 50 rubbish ones.

The price does not matter if the drill bits don't even last until you have finished drilling the first hole.

Titanium Nitride coating (if it really is that) on cheap soft steel is complete waste of time.
I totally missed that lol

I would swap all those drill bits for just one decent screw.
Screw?
Over 18's only.
So less than £2 delivered which basically means you are paying less than £1 for 50 drill bits. Do you really expect the quality of the bits to be any good at less than 2 pence a pop? To me it's more hassle when the bit snaps unexpectedly. I guess if you're drilling plastic or something quite soft you may be fine with this set, but otherwise I may probably avoid this as it seems to good to be true.
Ideal alternative to a pound shop

Considering the chinese or asian's build almost all the phones on the market today....that's a pretty stupid thing to say
Even the phone in your hand probably came from over there or has a vast number of parts from over there...

Go xiaomi and you'll never go back
I would buy this if they included free rice

Delivered "30-50days" No feedback yt for this item. Very cheap for an android box with Kodi
If you get the remote shown in the revue you mention, that would be a bonus.
Why bother with Libreelec, the only purpose of that it is to load Kodi, which this box already has?
The picture with the remote is from elsewhere and the review is for a mecool Km8
The KM5 (not km8) is made by the same company and only differs in colour, specs are identical. Other places show this remote as coming with this device. The launcher/home screen looks identical to the rupa a5 android box.
See here
But why post reviews of a different product and a picture from another website.

because i couldn't find a review for the mecool hm8 but it's the same as the km5 so it was relevant and your second point, i couldn't find a picture of everything in one pic so chose a pic from elsewhere. if you look at manufacturers site, you'll see that it comes with the remote that is pictured.

I've don't have this box but just to give my experience with these boxes:

I would spend a bit more and go for 2gb ram. I still use a 1gb box in one room, and the speed difference is noticeable as Android does seem to have a lot of memory sapping services.
If you flash Libreelec 1gb runs lovely with no issues but you lose the facility to use Mobdro and Showbox .

I would stay clear of S905x and buy a S905 box (if you can find one). I have had both and the S905x suffers with a few issues (Google is your friend). The big thing for me is the brightness on the S905x is darker than S905.

No need for 16gb as 8gb is more than enough.

I would also install SPMC instead of Kodi.

Mini M8s S905 from gearbest is a good box at £35 usually takes 2 weeks delivery.

http://m.gearbest.com/tv-box-mini-pc/pp_334005.html?wid=21

Just my opinion, hope it helps someone with their decision.

You can dual boot liberelec / android so best of both world's, all on a cheap 1gb box.

is this phone any good?

I currently own the Le Max 2 X820 which is pretty much the same with less RAM. It is a fantastic phone....considering the spec and price I'm really happy with it. Worth noting that mine came with a custom EU ROM installed so a lot of the chinese language apps & stuff were not present when it arrived.

Pros:
21 MP rear camera (8MP front)
1440p screen
Finger print scanner
Fast Charge 3.0 with USB-C
Decent Battery life
Dual SIM or Single SIM/Micro SD

Cons:
Quite Heavy
No 3.5" headphone jack (comes with USB-C to 3.5" adapter)
Getting the phone updated can be hit and miss with custom ROMs
Aftermarket support has not extended to EU.....their website only seems to cater for North America & Asia at present.
No reinforced glass on this baby, so best to get an extra tempered glass screen protector and a flip case for it.
Only has one USB-C connector, so I Had to buy additional micro USB to USB-C adapters so that I could hook it into any existing chargers.
why not http://www.gsmarena.com/meizu_pro_6s-8389.php ? same form and look, but better camera and bigger battery.. :)

why not her Meizu Pro 6?I almost went for it..lovely little devil..too little for my hands, though.. Haha

Small battery coupled with a Mediatek processor doesn't bode well in my eyes. It does look quite lovely though I admit.

My mum's got this phone (well x820). The seller installed a global ROM.
I don't like the software, although it looks very elegant, there's no app drawer, no normal drop down menu and there's still some bugs here and there.
In terms of the outside, no complaints, it looks nice, uses USB C etc.
Performance is very good.
I think at the price she bought it £170 for 4gb ram I would recommend.
It'll probably be better with a custom ROM, I've not looked into it cause she's been alright with it so far.

You can get an app drawer easily by just installing a different launcher (don't even need a custom ROM) such as Nova Launcher (seems to be the most popular).

I am however quite wary of bugs in stock ROMs; what kind of bugs are there? I bought the LeEco X800 and there were quite a few bugs which, along with the terrible battery life, made me keep my Xiaomi Mi Note (although I upgraded to a OP3 now).

I find that Xiaomi, Meizu and ZTE Nubia seems to have the better OS out of the Chinese UIs. I've had Lenovo ZUK, IUNI and the LeEco and they are more buggy and whilst they all looked clean and nice, they were a step down when it came to software features and had more bugs.

The current crop of Xiaomi, Meizu and ZTE Nubia phones don't really appeal to me though, especially at their respective price points and design hence I'm really tempted to get this Le Max 2 for my brother as he's using an ageing Meixu MX4 which is coming to a crawl with the MediaTek MT6595 and 2GB RAM. I need to get my sister a phone too as the Zuk Z2 I got her suddenly died and doesn't charge anymore. :( She was happy with how fast it was but now she's back to her Xperia Z3 Compact with the dated Snapdragon 801 and 2GB RAM. Other than the ugly Xiaomi Mi5 I don't think there is any other compact 5.2" or smaller phone with a Snapdragon 820, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage for £200 or less. Not even sure what will happen to this dead Zuk Z2 as the seller that I bought it from (aliexpress) is just ignoring me now.

I think it's confusing so I think it's best to expire deal.

That's the 1gb version, even says so underneath where it lists the plug type.

djmackie2000
it says Core: 2.0GHz,Quad Core i am sure i read up it was only 1.5Ghz

They combine GPU speed and CPU, you are unlikely to hit 1.4ghz on the CPU due to throttling.

Looks good. What about customs?

If you choose DHL then customs duty is almost a certainly.

Surface shipping might not get checked but never any guarantee.

I think it's custom free because they sent me as photo frame
Not sure if to trust these no brands.

Fire risk?
Looks good for the price.

Battery life is a little on the low side.

As far as resolution is concerned, when you take into account all the specs, only a snob would complain for the price.
Joy_A
Nice spec but the screen resolution kills it for me

Real shame that is, would have been worth a punt at the price otherwise. Probably still ok for many folk but when you're used to an S6 screen...

Received mine today.
As expected it works in Win10 without any drivers.
I bought mine from DX as Ali Express don't take paypal:

A bit more but got here quick which was good.

I am using mine purely for kodi streaming tbh, I have now plugged it directly into the mi box and it seems to be pulling around 4mb a sec. through the hub it was dropping to 1-2 mb. Latency is much lower lowe compared to Wifi

Mines plugged into a 3 port USB hub I had spare, the hub plugs into the mi box and it works fine. I added storage to the hub and the mi box sees it. The thing to not the mi box only has USB 2, so USB 3 devices are wasted.
IAmTheDude
Is there any similar LAN & USB hub using the ASIX 88772 around?
Cant seem to find any confirmed and the USB is critical for me with the Mi4k!
I was looking for something similar to this (but USB2). Cant seem to find anything confirmed chipset wise though.
I have tried a cheap hub I had lying around but it kept disconnecting (like was a power issue) but it was like £1 hub :)
I've moved away from the MiBox at the mo for a main box but would like to get it up and running properly as AndroidTv and emulators/gaming is pretty good on it!

I bought it to replace my OSMC Pi for the added extras of Android (games, emus etc) but the initial release was too buggy for me. Awaiting the 7.0 release for full bug fixes but was hoping to get a LAN/USB hub to keep everything a little neater.

Needed a hub as I would need a USB for internal storage and I have another USB which is my 'universal' Emustick.

With 5.0/6.0 I still get WiFI dropouts (hoping 7.0 fixes that) so was looking for a AIO solution for USB and LAN.

just ordered this. it's the best Chinese phone imo in regards to build quality tee'd with specifications. closely followed by the Vernee Apollo lite. can't wait.
The 64Gb is clocked at 2.5Ghz, I checked my andoid patch level says 5th Sep 2016.
Great screen, good camera. Battery life i decent once you figure out the best setting for performance that suits you, took me a while.
No official global rom on this, and i haven't been able to get a custom rom. I've found the software to be good enough anyway.
Rumors of a snapdragon version, if true would be a very good upgrade and open up custom roms.

I agree they come with a health warning and you should research ALOT before purchasing.

from ROM support to vendor sneaks to import duty there are potential issues.

but they still offer very good value when ordered well. my redmi note 3 se came for under 130. great bit of kit, less than what is pay for comparable UK phone. very happy.
strnik
got xiaomi redmi 3 pro, via gearbest. very good phone, great battery life, only disappointments are that camera is inferior to high-spec sony/samsung (especially obvious in bad lighting conditions) and it has no NFC.
also, not sure if it is standard xiaomi build or custom one by sneaky reseller, after couple of months some on-screen adverts appeared (popping out at random over the screen). I managed to identify that these are caused by 'system app' com.android.system.v5 (it was downloading adware apk files and starting them) and got it disabled (via builtin app manager).
so beware - there might be built in adware / malware, and no guarantee your sensitive data will not end up in the wrong hands (i.e. it is 100% sending some data continuously to servers in china &etc, open connections could be clearly seen by tools like 'OS Monitor'. but it could be more than 'just statistics', and who would you complain to about any problems ? definitely not to Chinese government )
.. and, of course, no warranty in uk ...

It's issues like this that make me think I will stick to buying phones made for the UK market.

You don't have to spend much on a phone over here anyway with the likes of the Moto G, Wileyfox Swift 2 and P8 Lite 2017 edition all packing good specs for under £200.
Looks like this has expired - now showing at £128
The phone took about 9 days to arrive from the dispatch date.

I selected Falkland Islands as the region at the beginning, it is really strange how there are so few region options.
First I update to the latest firmware
Added my Google account
Updated all the apps (Google play store was already on the phone)
Once this was all up-to-date I then added my Sim card.
Solid 4G at the moment.

I had a lot of teething problems but everything is working really well now.
slickster25
Do you think its your handset or this model in general?
Could just be the Xiaomi global/international editions with Band 20 haven't been tested properly. They've unlocked support for it but the code that decides which frequency to connect to isn't very good.

I'm just reading that O2 only use Band 20 (800MHz) which severely limits their 4G capacity. Still, the phone should switch to 3G at least. Personally I'm going to avoid O2 and Chinese mobiles in future!

EDIT: Have also seen Xiaomi's sales are dive bombing in China, they won't even publish figures for 2016 they're so bad. Doesn't bode well for their future.

In truth I'm somewhat alarmed by that. If they ran out of the B20 version, it would make sense to make a new listing. On the other hand two listings for the same product don't make sense.

This does Not have band 20 (although it has official global firmware)

I think the seller changed the product page at some point since the deal was posted and they seem to no longer sell the B20 version. My link in comment #4 from 'Xiaomi Online Store' also changed to a non B20 version, even though they still appear to sell it in 2 other listings here and here.

It's about time someone who ordered it received it and played with it. It'd be interesting to know how they feel about it. What about import taxes. Would I have to pay them?

I have xposed working fine on my xiaomi eu rom, yes not all modules for xposed work but a fair number of modules bring miui type features to android so I don't need them.

Miui is in my opinion way better than stock Android, unless you don't use call recording and utilise the inbuilt firewall features.
The launcher isn't to everyone's tastes but underneath miui is excellent.
And saying it's not android, I mean really?
What do you mean by stock... AOSP? With AOSP you can install Xposed Framework (as long as you're not on 7.x) and add whatever you want. I think that's much better personally. MIUI is OK though.

That wasn't the point :)

The Xiaomi phones are good.

But this deal is cold for me as:

- China ROM instead of Global International ROM
- 2gb/16gb when the 3gb/32gb represents better value and bang per buck and a better processor.

No update to Android 7. There's a lot of good phones and phablets around for a steal just now but just be aware you'll be stuck on Android 6.0.1 at best because they don't possess a chipset recognized by Google as sufficiently able to secure the phone to Android 7's strict demands. Nothing wrong Android 6.0.1 though - Android 7 appears to the user to be very similar on the devices I've seen it installed on - but no more android security patches means a year down the line you'll be open to attacks you otherwise wouldn't be, as rare as "attacks" on Android phones are atm. This is a bad time to buy a new phone if you want to run Android 7 on it - 7.1.1 is already running unofficially on many devices already - but is very buggy. If you're happy enough with 6.0.1 it's a great time to buy a new one. I really want a new phone but am gonna hang on until android 7 is more stable and get one with it pre installed and with guaranteed updates for at least two years.
Does this have the monthly security updates that are pushed out by google?

doesn't include vat and customs handling ?
Obviously not but as long as you don't go for the DHL shipping option then you won't pay any. Judging by your username though you won't be buying this deal just in case.
This comment has got way more likes than it should have. I chose the free shipping and will be charged vat and customs. Just spoke to royal mail about it. The only other explanation is that it has been lost.
If you thought you could be guaranteed exemption from Import Duty and Tax then you've been naieve
You've been unlucky in that they've cottoned on to you.
Take a deep breath and move on :)
I have been unlucky, there's no doubt about that. The only thing is whether AliExpress can handle a refund process. Here's hoping that they can. I'm just hoping the parcel is lost right now which would ensure a better chance of refund.
On what grounds would they offer a refund?
They've shipped it with no delivery charge as you paid them to.
Erm....Don't really know what to make of your angle here. If the item doesn't arrive the buyer is responsible. Just because you don't pay for delivery doesn't mean the owner can shirk the responsibility of having the item sent to you in one piece. AliExpress have Buyer Protection for this very reason. I hope to God you don't own a business.
The customs thing is a separate issue. As others have said here it's hopefully not going to be a problem. One valid reason for me to refuse delivery is that it arrived way beyond the estimated delivery time which by the way is well on course to happening. I should be able to reject it outright. Not that I will in this case.

Well obviously you're due a refund IF the thing doesn't show up. Did i really need to spell that out?

It was you who said.......

I told AliExpress about it and they've asked me to open up a dispute. If there's a customs charge then definitely not accepting it

....as if you're holding AliExpress personally responsible for UK Customs and Excise legislation :D

If they put £45 as phones price we won't be charged customs hopefully. Royal mail says it could be coz of random customs check. I will pay customs if its £20 rather than risking £125. Its not AliExpress fault anyways our bad luck I would say. Delay is due to UK authorities not coz of China. I hope we receive it asap

Mine still hasn't arrived after 17 days of being at "processing centre". I've told them what I think of it and right now just thinking of refusing delivery to have it returned and get money back
told whom? mine is 12th day of being at processing center. I called Royal mail yesterday and the lady told me the delay could be coz of custom checks and that u may have to pay the customs duty. Does any one know estimated customs duty on this mobile? I am also thinking of not paying the duty and returning it back. I saw somewhere in this thread may be a comment by someone who ordered to get it deliver by DHL and was not charged customs duty as the declared price was £45. lets see what happens
I told AliExpress about it and they've asked me to open up a dispute. If there's a customs charge then definitely not accepting it. I suppose we'll come to know how the AliExpress dispute process works.
Have you actually got this phone yet or just moaning for the sake of it.Royal mail will tell you theres vat and custom charges they have to.Doesn't mean it will they put the value at £45 or maybe $ on mine and there was no charges.wait till it comes.Good luck getting your'e money back any time soon.

No, I'm not moaning for the sake of it. I phoned RM and was told that parcel is usually delivered within an average of 15 days when it arrives at Heathrow, otherwise it's most likely lost or being held for customs-elated incidents. I order from China regularly, first time this has happened to any one of my deliveries. In fact I have already purchased this phone in gold from Geekbuying without any issues. Still stands that that comment doesn't hold true in all cases.

if you've ordered leads from China before surely you should have known before purchasing:

1 paying no customs duty is ever guaranteed

2 you're lucky you don't pay it, you should, it's a legal tax

3 if you do, it's what, 20% at most. is that 20 odd quid such a deal breaker, especially if you admit points 1 and 2 and the fact this is a really good phone?

I am wanting to buy this... what case and film did you buy to protect your phone? I have a virgin sim would it work with a virgin sim do you know? Thank you x
I brought the case and screen protector that you can purchase direct from Ali express with the phone. This phone is different to other note 3's because it's the global version and slightly bigger than the standard note 3. I believe it will work with all UK sims as all the bands are covered. I have both Vodafone and three sims in mine and they both work flawlessly. Hope this helps

Voted hot but does it have NFC and will it work with O2? If not, anyone know cheapest Chinese phone which does?
No NFC, no to O2 and no idea what cheapest Chinese phone will do. Buy cheap, buy twice. Xiaomi are well made phones though NFC is fairly unusual.
Thanks. Shame. That's the stumbling block that prevents me clicking buy as I use Android Pay. Also a bit suspicious of Chinese phones that they have some sort of spyware on them which I can't shake from reading too much post-apocalyptic fiction.

I've got one of these.
Never in a billion years would I describe it as a 'gaming mouse' - the optical sensor just isn't responsive enough for that - but it is fine for general desktop work. They're based on a pretty common generic design. I've also got one with silent mouse click buttons.
Hot because it's a bargain price, but be aware that the power management isn't that great - this mouse eats batteries like they're going out of fashion.
And for that reason I'm out

I'm not gonna invest and I'm out
When I click on the link, the price is $4.68, which is £3.77 rather than £2.26. I tried all three colours in case it was for one only.

I disagree, i have had one and it goes off after a couple of minutes, you click the button and it starts working again. The reviws clearly state that it doesn't drain batteries as fast as the other cheap ones
The reviews? X)
This is cheap, generic mouse. They're all based on the same generic design. It definitely has a weak point in terms of battery usage.
Your'e completely wrong, it goes off after a couple of minutes and an on/off switch is an extra.
And yes the reviews are what you should be going by when buying things, that is common sense.https://s28.postimg.org/6e6wm1tl9/Capture.png

AliExpress reviews? They're not reliable. Manufacturer's will also give the highest estimate.

How often has that guy been using it for it to last 3 months? A couple of hours a day, with him constantly turning it off to save on power consumption?

Power management on this mouse is very poor as you would expect for a low budget mouse. Think 6-8 weeks of daily use before you have to replace the batteries. With more intensive use, I get about 4-6 weeks before I start getting tracking problems and need to replace the batteries.

Compare that to the Logitech M705. I haven't had to replace the batteries in that in over a year.

Anyone got this? How does it compare to iPhone 7 in term's of size, weight & feel?

Yes I do. It's about 3mm smaller in height than the 7 plus, 1/2 mm narrower so the bezels don't look too bad. It's a quality phone for the price. Apart from not having band 20 it's on par with Xiaomi, however I feel it has a better build quality than Xiaomi.
