Contract law. Fraud Act 2006. Fraud by false representation - by supplying Amazon with a 'fake' billing address.

I doubt very much anything would happen tho. Lets face it everyone is happy, We made a purchase rather than pirating it. Amazon and the published are both happy. So am I.

Now.... surely retailers in the UK could start selling at prices like these and we'll all be even happier.

Oh, one more thing... where is the STEAM SALE?????

If you want to buy multiple titles but don't want to pay an individual fee to your credit card company for each one, you can set up a specific US Amazon account, then using your normal Amazon log into the US site and buy a gift voucher for the correct amount and send it to the email address associated with the US specific account.

The gift voucher can then be loaded onto the US specific account and used to buy the games - I used this technique to buy 4 of the sale games yesterday.

It MIGHT also be possible to use this to buy games without ever putting a credit card or billing address onto the Amazon account, but I've not tried it myself so I don't know how it would actually work out.

Use a US Billing Address for purchases, nothing else is required.

Delaware or Alaska work well as no tax there. Just need to make up a US address before being able to buy.

    1 US$ = 0.637673766 UK£ (according to Google)

Thanks for all the effort, some good deals in there. Just so people know, Lloyds charged me a £1 overseas transaction fee for my last amazon.com order. Probably not the case for everyone, and it's only a quid, but worth bearing in mind.

Yeah most debit cards charge. I think its HSBC that doesnt.

I thought Bioshock 1 & 2 were Games For Windows Live do they definitely activate on steam ?

There have been cheaper deals for one or two of these, and also in general Amazon US digital downloads don't get as hot as other deals because of the hit and miss nature of getting it to work.

Some people's cards will charge them for overseas use etc.

Fair point on the ~£1 cost to use some cards, but there is no "hit and miss" on getting it to work - just add a US address to your Amazon addresses and use that as the delivery address. It doesn't need to be a real address at all, just a real Zip Code which you can get by googling a restaurant in the city you choose.

Even with the ~£1, i'm not sure you can get the likes of Spec Ops or Max Payne cheaper anywhere?

Prices are starting to change now - Darkness 2 is at $12.49, Syndicate is $14.99. No change to Spec Ops or Max Payne 3 yet though. Strange how they haven't changed them all by the press of one button .

EDIT - UPDATE - It looks like it's live now !!!

I'm suprised that this works. To be honest I've used Amazon.com like this to buy a few games in the past. But trying to buy an MP3 album from them.... it's impossible.

I hate that the USA get so much better prices that us over here.

So I'm supposed to use a US address as my billing address? I added a valid US address as my delivery one, but for downloads there's no option to deliver, just use a billing address. Any ideas?

When you press "Buy and Download" you will get a dialogue box saying "Not available outside the US" (or something similar) ... look to the right hand side and change your billing address to a US one and it should go through.

  29. dobo's avatar
Oh thanks, I was just hesitant about whether it would even process using a US billing address.
  30. sparx1981's avatar
although this could be deemed as a minor fraud offence, how would this be any different to buying the game on DVD from the USA?
  31. dobo's avatar
I suppose Amazon are bound by some laws or licenses around downloads that they can only sell in the US where it wouldn't usually apply to a physical product. I think it's the same with iTunes etc, most likely licensing issues.
  32. dobo's avatar
It's not likely anything will ever happen. The only odd thing about the process for me was that there was no 'verified by visa' authentication. You just enter your card no/name/expiry, use a US address and the order processes. They'll probably end up changing this once people catch on (if it becomes an issue to them)

I've been buying games like this since March ... bought FM2012, The Darkness 2 and a couple of games from this sale without any problems at all.

    Nothing will happen.

I was just being a pedant and making it clear that the commenter was correct when he said it was illegal to do it, seeing as Macdory asked for the relevant legislation.

Also, this is nothing like buying a game/DVD from the US. Amazon specifically state US Only and therefore by entering a false address you are technically being fraudulent.

You would never be arrested for anything like this, but Amazon have a right to rescind the contract for misrepresentation...not that they ever would :P

Sorry. Typo. :P I mixed up misrepresentation, a contract law term which would apply in this instance... and of course fraud by false representation as covered in the Act Hope that clears it up for you.
