Butlin’s was established in 1936 by Billy Butlin who sought to provide affordable holidays for British families, regardless of income. Butlin was inspired to create the holiday camps after he went on holiday to Barry Island, where he was only allowed into the bed and breakfast that he was staying in during the evening and overnight.
In the 1960s, the popularity of Butlin’s declined due to the introduction of continental package holidays and in the decades that followed several camps were closed down or sold to competitors. Towards the end of the 1990s, Butlin’s underwent a rebranding period and since then the holiday camp chain has experienced a mini revival in popularity. Although it still competes against European resorts for the summer holiday crowd, in recent years Butlin’s holiday camps have become popular for half and mid-term holiday breaks, for family holidays and for weekend breaks for stag and hen dos.
These days, the easiest place to purchase a Butlin’s holiday is online at www.butlins.com. It’s also typically the cheapest place to purchase a Butlin’s holiday as you’re not paying a travel agent’s commission and you can take advantage of promotional offers or use a voucher code.
If you’d prefer to book your Butlin’s holiday offline, there are several options. If you live near a Butlin’s resort, you can speak to one of the agents in the Butlin’s shop on the resort. Alternatively, visit your local travel agent where you will be able to purchase a Butlin’s holiday over the counter.
As well as summer holiday breaks, Butlin’s offers a range of different holiday types and accommodation at their three holiday camps in Bognor Regis, Minehead and Skegness throughout the UK:
The accommodation available includes luxurious chalets, apartments with open kitchens and a lounge area or rooms.
