*** Virgin Media Home phone required - this app is exclusively for the use of Virgin Media customers with the Virgin Media Home phone service ***

With Virgin Media SmartCall, you can use your Virgin Phone talk plan on your iPhone, anywhere with WiFi. So you can talk more on your mobile, without using up your mobile minutes.

The home phone you can take anywhere
It could save you oodles of money because you can make calls from your Virgin Phone talk plan on your iPhone, anywhere you can connect to a WiFi network, at no extra cost. It's free to download and exclusive to Virgin Media customers.

Once you've registered, open the app and make use of all of those unlimited calls you have in your Virgin Phone talk plan. And it works whether you're at home, at a friend's house, in a café or anywhere else with WiFi.

SmartCall isn’t like Skype. With SmartCall you can call normal numbers; using the same unlimited minutes that are included in your Virgin Phone talk plan.

The person you're calling doesn't have to have SmartCall or be a Virgin Media customer, if the type of number you're calling is inclusive in your Virgin Phone talk plan then you can call them at no extra cost with SmartCall.

It even works from abroad
Wave goodbye to those hefty roaming charges. Now you can use the same calls you get with your home phone while you're abroad, so you can catch up with friends and family without worrying about a nasty bill when you get home.

Unlimited calls, at no extra cost
SmartCall uses the unlimited calls in your home phone plan, so they never cost a penny extra. Save your mobile minutes or your Pay As You Go credit for when you need them. Just connect to your nearest WiFi and make unlimited SmartCalls instead.

SmartCall works on up to two smartphones (so you can share it with your family) and it doesn’t even matter what mobile network you’re with.

All your contacts at your fingertips
Flicking through that old address book to find your auntie’s number is a pain you can live without. With SmartCall, you’ll have all your iPhone’s contacts where you want them, so you can make calls much quicker and easier.

Share the love
Each Virgin Phone account holder can use the SmartCall app on up to two devices, so someone else in your home can enjoy making unlimited calls from your talk plan too. Better yet, you can make calls at the same time - perfect if you live with a phone-hogger.

Tango(iOS/Android) is good for voice calls over Wi-Fi, you don't get Skype hissing or Viber distortion and dropouts. I use it regulary for international calls. The call quality is really good, it is just like a normal phone call.

You then get the weird (Peter Kay like) conversation as the number presented is the normal home number and it's "I though you were on holiday...."

    But free is free

I guess you could use it in this country where you get wifi

Must be your phone or your coverage as works perfect for me has done all the time!

used it in vegas to call missus with a virgin mobile, completely free. never dropped out at all and sounded like a normal call. maybe you should check your connection.

Works great, daughter is at uni in the states uses it to call us and her friends all the time. Calls are as good as the wifi connection available.

I was already on the best calls package with Virgin so this is a no brainer for me to use, my mother lives in a village where the mobile phone signal is virtually non existent, I can make calls on my mobile using her wifi at no cost to me or her with far better reception than I'd normally expect out there. My own phone at home is pretty noisy so use my mobile indoors and it goes on my landline calls bundle. That's on a Nexus 5 too so the Nexus app is out there.

Surely an app like viber or skype would do this?

This is quite common now, you can get similar apps from BT (Smartalk) & 02 (TU Go).

I couldn't get the Android app to install. I might give it another try, as it's a useful facility which I'm effectively already paying VM for.
  28. rdann's avatar
If you have decent wifi coverage this is an excellent app. recommended.
  29. Chivas.Regal's avatar
So will this work with calls I DO pay for?

What I mean is, if I'm in the USA can I use it to call a landline in the uk but at a time when I wouldn't have free calls and it'd cost me 10p per minute as if I was using my landline?
  30. Crana's avatar
I've only got the free evenings and weekends package for the phone, does this mean if I call from abroad at peak times I'll be charged normal VM rates? Seems better than faffing on with a phone card I suppose, not everyone has a computer or smartphone to use skype on.

Ditto. I'm in Spain now at my in-laws house. They have rock solid wifi. The mobile was less than 50cm from their brand new Telefonica router. Even then the signal flucated between good and poor and basically was unusable. In the end I just used Skype since the quality was so much better - clearer and more consistent. Yes, Skype isn't always free but a fre call that is unworkable is no bargain. Typical Virgin. Late to the game and when they deliver it is a let down. What a shame.

I don't have a home phone, but surely its fine for those letting Aunty Betty know that they have arrived in Benidorm?

I've just done a bit of research and it seems as though for people like me who are on weekends only (or evenings and weekends) it just goes to a normal call when you are outside of those limitations, so it won't charge it to your bill. Shame.
  35. V5ULY's avatar
Just set up..noticed you cant use this outside of your package so no unexpected bills..

I am on the same as you, looking through my bill I somehow spend more than £15 charges anyway so I may as well just get the all calls package then make use of this.

works well for me so long as there is good work Wi-Fi signal. once you've selected the number to call it tells you if it would be included in your package, and if not you can just choose the normal call option.

Works brilliant, saves me a fortune calling from abroad. Pity its only on WIFI tho.
