These are great, I've got 2 of them, an N40 and N54, and the N54 is much quicker, and better for serving plex.
I have WHS (which just about does the trick), Plex, UMS, utorrent. All run on sheduled tasks so I dont have to log in when the little thing starts up.
All you have to factor in is the price of HDD's, some extra RAM (8GB at least) and possibly a cheap low profile graphics card if you want an HDMI output. You can also get a cheap £20 wireless keyboard with built in mouse. Also USB sound output is around £2 on ebay or Amazon - which I've also bought and works fine.

I also have this plugged into the TV, and can run Sky GO so I can watch Sky sports, courtesy of a family member who lets me log in with his account. It works flawlessly.

The way I look at these, is that they are a nice little versatile file server with the bonus of being able to install virtually any OS on them, and can have up to 6 hard drives running at SATA 3GPS. A dedicated 4 bay NAS is obviously better for its purpose, but can end up costing a lot more.

I've got raid striping on 3 drives, which has a throughput of about 340MBs read/write, and the built in 1GB NIC maxes out at around 90-100MB network transfer speed via a Gigabit switch.

Hey guys so i got bored and decided to write a detailed tutorial on installing XPEnology AKA Synology's DSM Operating System on the HP N54L, Here is the guide - cyanlabs.co.uk/tut…ver

i intend on getting it set up through ESXi soon but currently i was having really slow network issues with it running through ESXi so haven't bothered, since i don't have enough ram to run more than 1 VM currently any way, I get 110mb/s via XPEnology and SMB aka SAMBA aka Windows sharing.

These are the packages i run just incase any one was wondering.

Specified that it had to be a UK model. it arrived but HP has refused cash back. Digital fusion are ignoring emails and phone calls so I'm having trouble sending it back.

Once you've advised them that you wish to cancel the order via email within 7 working days, you're covered even if they haven't responded. Just ensure you keep the emails as proof. Contact Citizen's Advice on 0845 404 0506 to open a case and get a case reference number. They'll probably advise you to go to their website at the following link and create a letter from the template:

    adviceguide.org.uk/wal…htm

Send the item back, along with the letter to the seller's official address via a trackable service, preferably one with insurance. You may need to read their T&C to see where to send correspondence. The letter gives the retailer 14 days to respond; if they don't, call back Citizen's Advice as it's a criminal offence for a company to breach the Distance Selling Regulations.

Another method you can try, but only if you paid by credit card, is a Section 75 claim but the above is the first route to take.

I have an N40L and am using this memory which works fine. There is a new version of the bios out for these which enables windows 8.1 compatibility (doesn't boot with NIC enabled otherwise) which can be found here

I don't think either of you read what I wrote properly. I said if you get ecc, don't get buffered.

There are two types of ecc ram, buffered and unbuffered (aka registered). The registered stuff doesn't work in the Microserver.

I didn't mention Non-ecc ram - which also works, but you're still looking at 80-90 quid used for 16gb. Also be careful of big stupid heatsinks that some 'gamer' RAM has. Could be too tall for the case.

If you're "not too much into technical" then I'd leave this alone and buy a NAS, if you however were interested in learning more then simply Google Linux NAS micro server and I'm sure plenty of guides will show up... But the fun is in the configuration, "self building" and endless applications.

For a TV, sound is transmitted, for a PC monitor sound is not, and so it goes into the amplifier.
