Automated Media Server & XBMC Setup
I'm using StableBit DrivePool. This is how I have my MicroServer setup...
Top Drive Bay
1 x 64GB Crucial M4 SSD for WHS 2011 and the StableBit DrivePool software (a bargain at £13.00!)
1 x 2TB Samsung HD204UI HDD
1 x OWC Multi-Mount Adapter (P/N: OWCMM35A52CMB)
Bottom Cold-Swap Drive Bays
4 x 2TB Samsung HD204UI HDDs (purchased back when they were £50-£60 each)
The SSD is installed in the OWC 2.5" to 3.5" adapter which in turn is installed in the Dual 3.5" to 5.25" adapter along with the 2TB HDD. This fits in the space where an optical drive would normally go.
The fifth 2TB HDD was then connected to the spare SATA port on the MicroServer's motherboard, while the SSD is connected to a Lycom PE-108 PCIe SATA controller (£18 from Sċan). This card also comes with an external eSATA port that includes port-multiplier support (unlike the onboard eSATA port which only works with a single drive). This could be useful in the future should you want to add more disks.
To ensure the hard drive in the top bay runs at full speed, I flashed the modified BIOS (more info on that here). If you don't do this the HDD will be limited to a transfer speed of around ~20MB/s which is really slow.
Once that was done I installed WHS 2011 from a USB flash drive, downloaded all of the latest Windows Updates and finally installed the StableBit DrivePool add-in. Next, I created a pool and assigned it a drive letter (X:\ in my case). The size is 9.09TB after formatting.
Using the WHS dashboard, I then moved all of the default shares from C:\ to X:\ and then created a few more of my own (some of which are set to duplicate the data stored in them onto another drive).
Hopefully that all makes sense.
Yes, I bought a 8400gs low profile, silent.. has hdmi out and also does audio over hdmi... So I have Windows Home Server 2011 reunniing on it, 8gb ram (£24 at the time) and have installed XBMC on it... works great!
But they are such a great machine and this is such a great deal, I just want to buy another
mind you I still managed to pop in an SATA optical drive and connect it up which I'm quite chuffed about.

Hi, what are the outputs on these?
Hi, please could you talk me through how you set these up as a HTPC? Do they have an HDMI out? Did you have to put in a separate graphics card? TIA
Amazon don't sell them do they?
I thought i seen some on there...but looking further they are third party sellers. so they wont i wont be able to get the cash back... so much for hoping to use my vouchers
at least I have another month to think about it
Thanks for the reply. So you don't need a separate audio card then, that's good. Due to the processor, do you have to run Windows Home Server on it? How does that compare to Windows 7? I've had very little experience with servers so any help appreciated. How good is the processor in this compared to say an i3?

these are servers. if you want a good cheap media centre, look at something like an acer revo.

As an aside, I think the most impressive thing about this kit is the IPMI 2.0 functionality.
mine has 8gb ram & 6450 graphics card running WHS 2011 & XBMC. I installed whs via usb drive. Don't know if i would install WHS 2011 if I was starting over again. Nothing is straightforward not a lot of drivers around so end up using win 7 64 ones :-/ Can't figure out what what antivirus software to use. Can't seem to figure out IE security settings & I didn't realise that it doesn't include media centre. Another problem is when I access it through an xbox or dlna tv the files don't list in alphabetical order so trying to find an artist out of 100's can take ages. Can't get weather or youtube working on XBMC...
The server itself is great tho.
It's not a very powerful cpu, but enough for running a server, with very low electrical power requirements. I think you'll be very disappointed if you are looking to compare it with a desktop.

Very happy with it.
this works out £130, aint the revo dearer?
Well worth it IMO. As a few others have mentioned, its quiet, quick, compact and doesn't make a massive energy bill, unlike the machine i used to use as a server - turned out it was pulling nearly 400 watts constantly!!!
Did you check the HP website? All the drivers you need are there.
NOD32 is officially supported on WHS 2011.

Yeah these are servers. But that doesn't mean that they don't make great little HTPC.
I have had one running XBMC which I have now gone to PLEX. For quite a while.
All you need is a graphics card and a bit of extra memory and they are excellent. Mine is currently running Windows 7. As a media server/player these are great with a bit of research and setting up.
Also, is it possible to access NAS on your network TV via ethernet network?

That really depends on what operating system you install on there.
My only concern is what happens if the OS drive goes down. How do you recover the shares/files from the RAID array?
I'm assuming here that I'd use the included 250gb drive as the OS drive in the top bay and populate the remaing 4 bays with my current drives.
Yes
