It could also serve as a nice little ESXi box but even then the CPU isn't all that.
For those who want a media player, why not just get some thing like WDLive or Acer Revo / XBMC Live combo that works straight out of the box?

(Actual power usage seems to be between 30 - 45 watts)

Yay, one free internet for someone actually reading the terms and conditions!
EDIT: Thought I'd try a PS3 chat pad but no VGA cable in the house. Ha, I give up.

Nice. Personally I'd probably install SpogStream, SofaPlunge, EX-nurk, Wogglefin (2.351 obviously) and the d-MuLex client.
Each to their own though.
Link below shows offer has been extended till 31st January 2012.

Yes, the offer has been extended until 31 January 2012.
Andl - Personally I dont think its too loud. I've not run the microserver without the graphics card so cant comment on how much noise is from the graphics card or the case fan. Overall though its quiter than my old Readnyas DUO which was quite loud when the drives were spinning, this Microserver is probably on par with my PS3. If you're listening to music or watching TV I'd doubt that you'd notice it. Putting it in a cupboard / TV unit would further reduce noice.
The CPU is soldered onto the board I believe.
I have Server 2008 R2 running along with Filezilla server to access files from anywhere, uTorrent to automatically download my torrents through rss, Yawcam to remotely view the lounge and motion detection recording (emailed to me automatically) and xmbc to play all the movie/tv shows.
And it does it all very smoothly.

Heres the link to the cashback form

Heres a link to adding 5th drive, posted earlier

1) download the hp bios from here:
Your text here
2) download the modified bios here:
mediafire.com/?bn…4x9
3) Run the.exe from the original HP bios.
4) Run hpqusb.exe from INSIDE where you installed the hp bios software to (c:/ something i think)
if its not there (im not sure if it is in there from the begining or not) download it from the browser window and move the exe to the bios software install folder.
5) Once the usb stick is created... it might take a little while, Drag the modified bios file onto the usb stick and click replace (you shouldnt need to rename anything)
6) make sure the server is off and plug in the usb stick
7) turn the server on and it should pick up the bios update and do it automatically.
you know if it is installed as it will now say "thebay" in the bios revision or something like that.
9) enter the bios go to Southbridge Config, SATA 4/5 and disable sata 4/5 IDE mode. that will enable the change.
10) install windows
that is step by step what i did, with a bit less trial and error :P
Yes, this is how I did mine as the tape on its own wasn't enough.

I believe that feeds the four bays.
is the care pack cashback 30% offer extended as well?
although it does come with a 250GB drive to get you started, you will soon use this up so agree that you'll need to buy some bigger drives - i think there's space for 4 in there ;-)
You get one with it according to their site...
- Ultra micro tower
- AMD Turion II Neo N40L / 1.5GHz
- 2GB DDR3 SDRAM
- HDD 1x 250GB
i am not certain but HP only lists one very expensive (£1,750+) care pack at the base of that pdf linked above.
Sorry I meant this item?
amazon.co.uk/HP-…8-1
Use the £10 off voucher SALE10 and get it for £229.98
much better to buy one of these than a standard NAS ..as you will outgrow it.
tis a good shout - Dabs website says that they have 3 left if you're quick ...
just as i plan to do but you're clearly way ahead of me already - this may be worth a read as it looks like other bright sparks also have this kit ;-)
Which is what RAM it matches to if you put it on Kingston.
Anyone know which is right? Am after 8gb, overkill I'm sure, but better over than under!
Also if anyone has recommendations for a graphics card that would be cool.
It would replace the ReadyNas and PS3/360 if you wanted it to. Put the content on the N40L and simply play that through your TV.
And yes you could setup something to access it when away Might be best/easiest if you just used Dropbox so it synced whatever you put in your Dropbox folder on your MBP. I'll probably set up an FTP address I can access from anywhere to drop stuff to.

The link posted by OP (http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/pdf/PA0031_Microsoft_ROK_Cash_Back_Dec_11_tcm_183_1141156.pdf) is only showing the £200 cash back, which you must purchase a Microsoft server OS in order to qualify for the cash back.
The page here is still showing the £100 cash back is valid until 31 Dec 2011 only.

I'm looking for a NAS at the moment and this looks superb but i daresay i'm correct in beleiving the power figures for this are going to be upwards of 300W while a standard NAS would be far less i would have thought. Might not be a problem for others to which this is an amazing deal.
I can't find the form either, would be better to wait untill it shows up.

300W? No way.
