You will have to use a dongle such as the HUAWEI E1750 with a sim in it in order to use 3G on the tablet.

This is similar to the one that was available earlier during the week

but it has half the RAM, still a good deal though

There's another device on Amazon also called an M009S. That one gets lots of 1-star reviews http://www.amazon.co.uk/NATPC-M009S-Google-Android-Tablet/product-reviews/B004RAN7VI/ref=sr_1_1_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
But the (older?) device seems to be a lower spec in terms of Android version, memory and screen tech (capacitive / resistive touchscreen).

Some of those reviews are for a resistive screen, while this is advertised as capacitive. Also that has android 2.2, only 2gb storage. Also some of the reviewers seem to want a ipad quality device for £50.

is there a 3g tablet that can just take a sim card without an adapter in this price range? Or perhaps up to £100? Looking for one that can be used as a phone (with BT headset) as well as a tablet

I have a budget tablet (not this one). They're not as stable or reliable as a top end tablet, of course, but perfectly good for games, youtube, surfing, emails, etc. - and at around fifty quid it's not the end of the world if you don't use it as much as you thought you would. (I use mine a LOT more than I thought I would!)
Hell, keep the packaging, and if you're not all that keen on it give it to someone for xmas ;)

Doesn't look to be fulfilled by Amazon, though...

Yup. Not FBA. The seller dispatches these themself and Amazon don't deal with the returns either...

Anyone know if the seller is registered for VAT? I'd want a VAT receipt.

Tons of generic 7" cases on Amazon.

Just don't expect too much from it. I had one of these Chinese import tablets and it was higher spec than this one. Lasted about a month before I sold it. Too glitchy/laggy/slow for my liking.

My one benchmarked around 30% lower scores than a 2 year old Samsung Galaxy S phone. Web browsing was where I found it most annoying when lag kicked in. Not all games worked on it and it NEEDED custom firmware to get the best out of it.

Dual core ones and newer processors are appearing on some of the newer Chinese imports now so these older single core models are only going to drop in price.

A higher spec than this should benchmark faster than a Samsung Galaxy S - what one did you buy?

Are there any decent custom roms out there for this?

Eken A90.

Same processor/gfx as this but with 1gb of RAM.

Using Quadrant the Galaxy S benchmarked about 2200. The A90, with a well configured installation of CM9 ROM managed just over 1600. Stock it managed about 1500. My current Galaxy Note running stock ICS clocks in around 3700. My mates HTC One X is up around 4700. These cheapo tablets are not in the same league compared to newer (and a lot of older) smartphones I'm afraid.

Believe me, I tried every tweak available for the thing but it was just too underpowered for my taste.

If you buy this, the first thing I'd install would be Dolphin HD browser. The stock browser had a nasty habit of clogging up and force closing all the time.

** EDIT **

Sorry. Just noticed this one uses an A13 chipset rather than the A10 that was in the tablet I had. Although, having looked it up, the A13 appears to be a scaled DOWN version of the A10 chipset (no hi-res or HDMI support so it's cheaper). Besides the removed functionality, it's much the same.

But with half the RAM, I would only expect the lag to be worse ....

OR WHAT YOU CAN DO IS, IF YOU HAVE GOT UNLIMITED INTERNET ON YOUR MOBILE PHONE THEN YOU CAN MAKE IT WI-FI HOTSPOT AND CONNECT THE TABLET WITH YOUR PHONE WITHOUT ANY EXTRA COST. ;)

What does a custom rom achieve on a tablet like this and how easy is it to do?

Thanks op. Eken t01 and Ramos w17 dual core are also very good tablets for under £90.

The £50 price has certainly brought out a few emotions.
Decent tablet, decent seller.

Its got a single core(mp1 ?) Mali 400 so obviously a phone using a Power SGX540 has faster graphics.
Does not stop it being a great price.

Posted a similar specced tablet at a similar price last week and it got marked as spam. This forum can go screw itself.
#35
It will be fine for basic apps but poor CPU and no Google play (market place) support. I suspect viewing angle on the screen may be poor.

You could spend an extra £30 and get a refurbished advent vega with custom ROM.

Squeezes every last bit of performance out of it and is often more stable than the stock ROM's these things ship with.

The stock ROM on the A90 was average at best. CM9 was a good improvement usability wise but only managed to squeeze about 10% extra performace out of it.

They're usually fairly straightforward to install. The most awkward bit is often finding one which is 100% compatible with your device as there are LOADS of Chinese imports out there now. Many of which are clones of each other ..... except often with minor hardware differences.

The A90 for instance. The batches had different hardware in them for the touch screen and accelerometers but they were all sold as the same unit. This meant that even the Eken supplied firmwares only worked on 50% of the units sold! (If you tried to re-install, they all work out of the factory)

Thats the thing with the Chinese ones. Yes, you get more bang for your buck and the specs on paper look a lot better than the branded stuff you buy in the high street. But, you usually have to faff about with them a bit more to get the best out of them.

Not sure whether or not to buy this since I already own a galaxy note. It's really tempting me though.

Are those reviews created by people who actually bought the item through amazon? If so, your conspiracy theory would need to grow to gigantic proportions.

Clearly states in the title and the specs that Google Play Store is installed...
