I'm voting hot - but reluctantly tbh.

I was a LIFE customer that got taken over by Plusnet.

I got the 'everything's fine, just carry on as normal, don't worry about a thing' texts and emails about the takeover, so I did just that.

My last three bills from Plusnet have been way over what I normally paid to LIFE. The reason? Texts.

I used emojis and long texts with LIFE and never got charged a penny more than my normal bill. As soon as Plusnet took over, I got charged extortionate rates for emojis, any text over 140 characters and more than three texts in a row to the same number.

Naturally, I queried this rise in my bills with Plusnet. All the above was explained to me by their CS as... MMS's. According to Plusnet CS, emojis, any text over 140 characters and more than three texts in a row to the same number are automatically converted to an MMS which carries a premium rate charge.

Don't get me wrong, this is fair enough imo - providing you know about it in advance. I didn't.

And I stopped sending emojis immediately, but still got a high bill - which was down to texts over 140 characters, then was told it was due to three texts in a row to same number.

So, I'd actually - possibly - go for this deal, but atm I'm a bit miffed at Plusnet.

Thanks for your post - I was about to order this for my daughter, but I dont think I can stop a teenager using emojis in text messages.

I will look for another provider

Ta. See my previous post, but I will try Handcent too.

Was this using the default SMS app on the same handset without resetting phone to factory settings at any time?

    If so, very weird.

What I will say if you decide to try 'Handcent Next SMS' is that the default settings are the same as the default SMS app (to auto-convert long messages to MMS).

    To change this setting:

    1. Launch 'Handcent Next SMS' and tap 'Inbox' at the top of the screen.
    2. From the dropdown menu, tap 'More'.
    3. Tap the 'Settings' icon.
    4. Tap the 'All' tab at the top of the screen.
    5. In the 'Chat' section, tap 'Send Message Settings'
    6. Scroll down and untick 'Auto Convert To MMS'
    7. No confirmation required, so just tap the back button until to return to the home screen
8 Alternatively tap left soft button (Samsung handsets) and tap 'Close All')

    Job done!

I'd this not a setting on the phone though, where it's the phone, rather than plusnet that turn the texts into mms? Some phones do this by default but you should be able to change it. I've known windows phones do this, and for group texts.
Alternatively, you can delete the MMS APN settings from the phone.

This isn't just plus net that can do it and often it could be the phone that dies it, best to switch off MMS messaging, so that only text messages are sent.

It isn't your network converting your messages to MMS... it's your phone. Try downloading a third party messaging app, such as Handcent, use that instead of your native message app and make sure to turn off "convert to MMS" in settings.

I've been with Plusnet mobile for a couple of months. I double checked to see if more than one strung together text message to the same number is chargeable, as I've never been charged more. I just sent a long text message (5 texts) to a number and have not been charged for it.

Personally, it's good value on Plusnet mobile, but their customer service is pretty dire.

I confirm that you can. I called about the uSwitch deal. It expired at the time and they told me to quote this one instead. Great customer service every time I call. The switch to this tariff from the old 3G was smooth and painless. Heat added.

Are you sure this is not down to the SMS app you are using?

I had a similar problem a few years back where the Samsung Galaxy S2 or S3 default messaging app was converting long text messages to MMS. Emojis were also being charged for as messages containing them were automatically converted to MMS.

AFAIK, there was no setting in the default app to change that at the time and I ended up switching to 'Handcent' (now known as 'Next SMS') and never had a problem since.

A few generations later and still using 'Next SMS' on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge without issue. Not sure if the current default app can be configured to not convert to MMS though.

This sounds like the kind of issue and scenario where you could score a … This sounds like the kind of issue and scenario where you could score a bit of a slam dunk if handled right.I'm a bit busy and haven't read the rest of the thread, therefore excuse that it's rushed, or if perhaps youre familiar with elements of the following approach, or if you have already received advice along these lines;I would recommend pushing back, hard. If you're still a customer, research the relevant bodies in advance (Ofcom, Trading Standards etc) who you would in theory report Plusnet to. You will ask some questions you probably already know the answers to, and you'll be implying that you're about to leave, when in reality this may not be your immediate intention.Call up, and have a conversation along these lines. Start your story again with anyone in a new department that you are put through to.Be pleasant and diplomatic to anyone you talk to. Refer to 'Plusnet' and not 'you' whenever you describe the company or service you have received. Keeps people less defensive, and more on your side.eg 'Plusnet pledged to deliver a competent service to me as a customer'.Describe the issue as plainly as you have stated it above.Explain the reason for your call is that you're preparing a case, and that you will be in touch a few times over the next few days/weeks while you prepare notes for a third party that will be taking over the issue shortly on your behalf.Next, ask to have the procedure for ceasing your contract with Plusnet described. Then ask if there is a complaints team you could talk to in order to update them too, and to officially register your dissatisfaction over the charges you have received. Explain that you would like to speak personally with the person best suited to discuss the issue once more before it is escalated, and Plusnet are contacted by a third party representing your case.Explain that you would like to avoid this, because its already taken up much of your time. That all you want is a credit for the MMS charges PLUS a token of compensation for the time you have spent investigating the issue created by Plusnet.Companies are jumpy when they first take over another company. They don't want a headline like '10,000 customers outraged at Plusnet price hikes' a few months into their merger, and they throw resources and money at the problem in advance.

Weird! My experience has been the total opposite (an NO, I don't work for them).

Never had any long lasting problems myself and I've been with Plusnet well over 10 years.

There's been the occasional downtime, but not for long.

Whenever I've heard people complaining about their IPS ITRW, it has always been Sky, TalkTalk and BT that have been getting slated.
