Gotta disagree about it being difficult to get about without speaking the lingo.

I've been to Japan twice, both about 12-13 years ago (So before smartphones). I had no issues getting about whatsoever and travelled all over from Hiroshima up to Sendai with the rail pass.
There are "English" maps available at some of the stations and that's all you really need to get about. The difficult part is finding the right exit from some of the bigger stafions.

These days with map and translation apps, I'd imagine it's even easier to find your way about.

but it's probably the only way to see more than one place in Japan if you don't speak Japanese. They have an amazing coach, train, underground and overground railway system and although announcements are usually made on the trains and coaches in English and Japanese, it's very difficult for westerners to understand, or even plot a route.
what a load of rubbish. i just spent 3.5 weeks there and travelled solo all over the place from tokyo to fukuoka and everywhere inbetween and it could not have been more easy to get around!!

Completely agree, did the same sort of thing and don't speak any japanese. Couldn't have been easier, everything is in english...

We stayed here mid week, late, last year. Our room was clean but dated and the staff very friendly and helpful. We opted to eat there both nights of our stay and the food was fresh, home cooked and delicious. The other hotel residents were mostly pensioners so evenings were very quiet. We would definitely stay here again if we were exploring the area again.

Thanks for info. As I'm about to be a pensioner it sounds good for me.

Seems you buy a voucher and then i guess you pick a date.
How do we know if the dates are free?
Don't want to buy a voucher befor i know what I'm doing.

I've stayed here too. More central hotels are expensive. It's excellent value but yes, it has disadvantages like being a business/golfing hotel in the middle of nowhere. Going to ask OH if they want to go back though. Good nights sleep ad an ideal transit hotel

just spent Saturday night there: don't expect too much from the deal - hotel quiet, nothing going on - meal standard - wine menu very pricey - pint of beer almost £5 - bar opens at 5pm and closes at 10.30pm if not enough guests in - breakfast just warm - restaurant tables more in keeping with café!

It's hardly in the middle of nowhere, and Crewe is 15 minutes away. Probably only a few minutes more to Stoke. Nice place (Wychwood)

As for the deal itself, I would be very careful about paying between £89 and £139 (depending on the hotel) for just a "voucher". I tried making a test booking on the Travelzoo site and at no point does it check availability for you; you have to pay for the accommodation and then contact the hotel directly to see if your dates are available.
So if they aren't, you've just wasted your money and I wouldn't be too optimistic about getting a refund. For that reason, while the hotels get good reviews, I have to vote the deal cold. I'd sooner bypass Travelzoo and contact the hotel directly.
why don't you contact hotel first and book the date you would like to stay or tell them to reserve it. them buy via travel zoo

All the dates I chose were available on the hotels website, but when I phoned up to enquire about the same dates via Tavel Zoo I was told the hotel was completely booked on those dates...

I've had a poor experience using TravelZoo for a Michelin-star restaurant meal previously, since after I presented my voucher, I found that extras got added on at the end of the meal (without first being informed), e.g. service charge based on the original full a la carte price of individual items got added (not the voucher price), bread rolls and butter (when previous dining there they had given it free).

cheap for a four star hotel, pity it's so near to Plymouth aka the middle of nowhere. Please note this is a minimum of two hours travel down from Bristol aka the start of civilisation.

Don't worry, there is a Domino's, KFC and McDonalds in about 10 mins drive for you.

I know what's in the locality, I live there. I think you read my post from the wrong angle, I live in Princetown...

As do manners and originality.

This the place where the landlord called the cops, cos they served a customer utter rubbish food, and refused to fix the issue, and still tried to charge for a meal although not eaten by the customer ????

COLD from me, heard many a stories about this place!

Not the same pub, just the same name. The pub that called the police is actually in Iron Acton, some 50 miles South of Winchcombe - just outside Bristol and in the county known as South Gloucestershire! You really shouldn't believe all you read in the Daily Fail. The pub in Winchcombe is very nice. I've been several times as it is not far from my mum's. http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Steak-Police-called-row-tough-steak/story-28204921-detail/story.html
