Virgin Atlantic MAN-JFK Sept & Oct 2017, Upper Class - £700.00 (one way)

OK so this is still a lot of money, and I would vote it down if it weren't so much cheaper than other alternatives for a similar product. Manchester to JFK (New York) varying dates in Sept and Oct

£3,053 via Dublin, and takes 10hrs 20 minutes instead of 7hrs 50, an extra 2hrs 30 mins, probably less than the time you spend in US Immigration.

I'll admit Air France Business Class is £200 cheaper via CDG, but that's 12hrs 25 minutes!
If you want some better deals to the US, check for business class flights from Dublin. You also benefit from immigration pre-clearance as well as (usually) cheaper fares and no UK departure taxes.

Any separate flights to get you to/from Dublin have to been booked with plenty of tolerance for stuff to go wrong.
virgin upper is more like business than 1st class. you may want to check the seat configuration too if youre flying with someome as the herring bone layout means you dont really get to be close to youre other half, which could be a bonus. last time i flew upper i noticed a honeymooning couple and she sat on the ottoman/footstool for almost the whole flight but had paid a lot of money for the privellege. and finally if i was going to use uller again i would only ever fly out of lhr due its louge. all that being said heat for the price alone
The idea of posting a deal on here and then telling people not to vote it comes because "*insert whatever reason that the deal will bomb*" just didn't work for me. £500 extra each way for a pretty short flight is ludicrous too most people, me included. Hence my cold vote. I'd rather spend that extra grand on amazing dining experiences or hotels...
Its an OK price, but not fantastic. BA business class is £889 around those dates (out of Heathrow) and IMO BA business is better than Virgin upper, but that's a personal taste thing.

You really cant compare Virgin Upper with Emirates 1st - they are like chalk and cheese, and the problem with Virgin Atlantic is that they are just too small. I expect to see see them squeezed out over the coming years

Was seriously unimpressed with my last VA flight to Orlando MCO. Service and food was awful seeing as the flights were £1k each, but I guess we were in economy. Maybe using points to upgrade to upper class is the way to go.
I thought BA had a bad reputation but we used them subsequently again to MCO and it was so much better.

This is definitely true. I built a complex spreadsheet calculator to work out all the different combinations and upper class upgrades come out way above the rest in terms of value.

Are you able to share your spreadsheet so that we can do our own calculations?

Reward miles are best used for upper class, there is no point using your miles for anything else other than an upper class flight. 80k for JFK and 100k for the ROTW. I previously flew to Oz for 200k miles but they stopped that route :(:(:(:(:(
This is definitely true. I built a complex spreadsheet calculator to work out all the different combinations and upper class upgrades come out way above the rest in terms of value. I only ever use points for upper class now. Premium economy is pretty cheap anyway so don't waste your points on that.
Does it still work out this way when Economy and Premium Economy are reduced by 30% (and Upper Class isn't)?
I have enough points right now for a New York return trip myself and my wife in PE, but I would have to pump more American Express rewards points into Virgin Atlantic miles to make it Upper Class. Otherwise I'd be using the Amex points towards a hotel on the same trip.

As long as you stay clear of:
Economy reward flight
Economy upgrade to premium
Economy companion flight

then you should mostly be getting good value. At regular required miles, the above represent a loss (ie you're basically chucking your miles away). At 30% fewer, well I'm not convinced its that much better.

Basically the tax on economy flights wipes out the value of your miles.

Best things to use miles on are:
Economy upgrade to upper
Prem econ upgrade to upper
Prem companion

Upper companion oddly is also not a good deal.

I usually fly with virgin to the states but recently i priced up a 7 night stay in orlando with the other half and compared thomson, who use the dreamliner for orlando, with virgin and thomson was £673 per person and virgin £893 per person, staying in the same hotel. Its a tad annoying as im trying to collect enough miles for another upper class flight but a saving of £440 tips the balance
Holiday prices fluctuate all the time so unless you are in a hurry hold off, you could find that virgin are cheaper one day when you check. Or they could be the same price and thomson dearer, depends if you like a gamble but to just go off the price on one random day is a lottery.
It's worth pointing out that the discount is only applied to certain aspects of the holiday (taxes, insurances etc... are not included), so it's not a case of simply pricing a holiday and then deducting the discount percentage - you will also have to call or visit a branch in order to get the discount, which incurs a non-refundable sales fee of £25.
Shame can't get the deal for flights only!

We've been 3 times now
Easter April/May this was the busiest in terms of queues.

Last week Aug/first week Sept (American schools had started back) queues were quiet. We did have some thunderstorms and torrential rain, but everything cleared up in no time.

November, we were there over the Veterans Day weekend, queues were busy for the weekend, then it was fairly quiet. Got to stay on rides without having to queue again. Also saw the Halloween and Christmas Park celebrations.

I'd go again in November or end August/beginning Sept

What price would you expect to pay in August?
wouldnt go bak between july-sept. heaving all the time, and it's their storm season.
Have you been in October?
I have may times and IMO its a good time to go. We will do our 9th trip in oct or nov this year.
Ahh really. We have always been in April/May but I would love to go at Halloween. Are the parks quite busy?

AngLangS
We go every year in October, always the last 2 weeks. Sometimes we catch Halloween sometimes not. Parks are great at this time of year - but depending on your ages different parks are best. Weather not always ultra hot but usually very pleasant. Trick is to watch the flight prices regularly, do your research so that you know a good price when you see it and you can book it straight away. Caught a very good price just before Christmas for the last 2 weeks in October just £348 return booked it then it was gone the next day, so it is definitely possible to find a good price. Watch out for the prices from Dublin returning into BHX or Manchester - you can sometimes save £100. It all depends on whether you would have had to book a hotel in the U.K. the night before your flight

Which airport do you fly from? I'm looking for those dates but best price I can find is around 435 with KLM/Air France with stopovers each way

sorry the price as now gone up.. Not sure how to expire the post?

Yes. sign up.
All you need to claim the miles is the booking ref number and flight number.
The miles wont be added till the actual flight has taken place though. So you can wait till you get back and do it.

Flew with Virgin a couple of months ago, any idea if I can claim the miles retrospectively?

Yes, you can add miles from flights within the last 6 months, even if you have just signed up. Same goes if you just forgot to add your membership number on the booking.
Just click the Missing miles part. I did not join till after our last flight to the USA.
I'm pretty sure you can claim miles on flights you took from up to 6 months back, always worth a try..

not that many years ago you could get a new York return for under £300 ! Not knocking the price ,but it's not cheap

You're talking pre-2008 crash prices mate. Shhhhhh.
Back up to over £800 now which is the more average price. Hope it helped a few despite the cold votes and the 'it was cheaper when you got a free flight when buying a Hoover in 1983' comments :3

would you like your slippers fetched too?
Apologies if I have missed any info stating the dates, but do not appreciate the sarcasm. Genuinely just asking if there is a list of dates at this price, or are we just searching throughout the year.
my mistake? i thought you said "can someone compile one"
There was an Atlanta deal on the pirate.
I need 5 flights to Florida or Atlanta sort of area during Easter holidays if anyone spots anything. Cheers!
hey, I saw this and missed it. I want to go 23-30 March (could move forward a few days if needed), and think I saw it as low as £385 at one point. Now its up around £650, do you think it will go lower again, down to say £450 or is that it now? Want to go with Virgin for the airmiles (or one of their partners). Cheers
Disappointed they are now charging for seats though, that's why we ditched the cheaper chartered flights

I've been to Florida 4 x and would never pay that one way ! By far go economy , spend the cash at premium outlets where a pair of timberland jeans goes for £20 ! Carry an empty case going out , have fun !

If you're wearing Timberland jeans then the chances are that you're unlikely to be the sort of person that would fly upper class.
. I certainly wouldn't fly first class I'm afraid, I value my income and spending power too much.. Clearly idiots like you do though !

That's great that you're clearly intelligent enough to be able to work out everything about me from my statement! I can't see any part of my comment that stated that I fly first class but then maybe I'm too much of an idiot to spot it.

If you're wealthy enough and struggle to sleep in economy class then I think it seems entirely reasonable that you would pay to have a chair that can recline into a bed. The good food and other added benefits just sweeten the deal. After all, you can't put a price on a good night's sleep. Having said that, I agree that if you're earning £50,000 a year then paying for first class air travel frequently just isn't feasible.

If you watched the documenting Boeing 727 Crash Test in Sonoran Desert, then you don't really want to pay more to have higher risk. The survive rate is lower in the front of the plane than any other parts of the plane. Unfortunately first class and business class are positioned in the front of the plane.

The wife works for VA and we get free flights (upgrades too! 8) ). But we've flown with them for years before she joined them. They've always been quite good, but obviously there has been the odd issue as is probably the case with most airlines.

I feel they were probably better 10-15 years ago and I can't quite put my finger on why. Still a good airline in comparison to many others, but could be better.

I think they should concentrate more on the personalities of their crew as opposed to their looks - we fly with Monarch a lot and while their crew aren't quite so dazzling, they just have a much better and friendlier persona than other airlines we've flown with, including VA.

Here don't get me wrong Phil, sod the mediocre service, if I got free flights I'd fly Virgin every time ... :D

Thing is we don't fly with them much - most of our holidays are in europe, hence why we fly with Monarch a lot. We didn't use any of our flights last year, or in 2011. May be going somewhere in October but not sure. If they flew shorthaul it would be great, but we hate longhaul flights so we like to stay in europe! What a waste!

Got more important things to read than your comments :D wrong target<3

Have you not realised dudiczek - soldierboy has taken 'ownership' of this thread and sits in sole judgement of what is funny.

Unintentionally hilarious in itself, but at least he is taking out his anger in his virtual rather than real life.

Make sure if you take the hotel deal that you review the hotel online first. Quite a few of the lower priced hotels in NYC do not have en-suite bathrooms so you might find yourself having to leave your room to go to the toilet/shower/bath etc.
Mainly through to march but follow the link- Vancouver is in there for summer at 499 ... All listed
Dates?
Hotel is in second link with virgin holidays
Cannot see that this includes hotel on the link it shows just flights? How long is the stay?

Better than circus circus that's for sure...pity it's from south englandshire tho....

Why? All of these deals seem to fly from the @rse-end of nowhere usually.

Nice to actually have one that flies out from near London for a change.

There are only 3 main direct flights to Vegas

This one with virgin, one from heathrow with BA and one from Manchester but that is not a daily flight.

There is also BA out of Gatwick 3 times a week.

Don't dis The Hilton, it's legendary and it's where Elvis played in the 70's. It's off strip, but so are half the decent hotels in Vegas.

People need to stop calling the LVH a Hilton, it is NOT a Hilton so don't expect some nice luxury hotel. The name was removed over 2 years ago when it ceased to be a part of the Hilton chain, apparently it was struggling due to low occupancy which meant they were failing to pay back huge loans. Since losing the Hilton name, the occupancy rate has gotten even worse so i wonder how much longer it can survive, especially with new projects like the asian themed resorts word starting this year on the strip and the SLS opening a bit further down.

we have stayed there also .although it's very nice we prefer Caesars and the Venetian because we get automatic upgrades to their suites.

Go on spoil yourselves. Fly upperclass and then have suite at Caesars palace or the Venetian like we do.you will enjoy it much more. Awaiting sarcasm.

Or even better, stay at the Encore like we do.

I thought about booking, but I cannot find any reasonable all inclusive hotels. Can anyone help please

I just calculated a trip on http://www.travelsupermarket.com for 7 nights from May 14 and it worked out to £549. Maybe you can try them. I think I saw all-inclusive for the same dates for around £890.

All-inclusive and reasonable do not go together, unfortunately... at least not that I've seen in Barbados. To be honest, you're probably better off finding a nice beach hotel because if you're into water activities etc, they're plenty of jet ski and other water sports operators all along the coast, especially on the South Coast.
we need sunshineStacey on this thread I think as she is good at sourcing a Hot deal!!! :p

Thinking of going Barbados. Anyone know of good accomodation at decent prices. Either May or August. When is the best time to go where we can enjoy the weather??

I was there in early May last year for two weeks. Only rained a little whilst I was there. It dried up quickly once the sun came back out. Accomodation wise, I used HomeAway.co.uk to find a decently priced beach side apartment (they're named as Sapphire Beach) on the south of the island. It was near St Lawrence's Gap, so close to all the night life. There are some shops and a small supermarket a few minutes away too. It worked out cheaper than a hotel as there were six of us.
