IMHO, Virgin Media are the epitome of companies that lure people in with either great deals upfront or "edgy" marketing and then could not care less once you're signed up. I know because I've been screwed over by them twice, and didn't learn my lesson the first time.

Unfortunately they're the only cable company in my street. Don't be taken in if you can avoid it.

Stay away from VMed in urban areas. Download goes down to a mere % of the promised bandwidth during peak times.

Like Eslick I was offered 150mb which I was currently on for £24, £28 for 200mb and £30 for the full 200mb gamer.. I chose the gamer as internet was all over the place in the evenings with speed varies massively during peak times..

With 200mb Gamer there is no traffic management so get 200mb all the time plus I get 25mb upload.

if you put in your cancelation, you have to actually cancel and have your account set up so they will call you, their retention department should call and offer you a discount, in my second year of discounts, first was our signing up year and had a discount. This years discount is double the previous year, 150Mb for £23.

I've been with VM 8yrs and tried several times to negotiate a decent package, and although I manage to get my bill knocked down a bit I don't get anywhere near what they're offering new customers. I know I'll be facing the usual price hike around Feb again so to those who have cancelled and signed up again... Is it that simple or are you embargoed for a minimum term?

Just ordered along with £50 credit (offsetting £14.99 installation fee) - currently sitting here tethering to my phone as my SKY BROADBAND IS DOWN AGAIN. Screw Sky.

Absolutely can't wait to leave Virgin, have had no more than 5mb between getting back from work and going to bed for months...it's supposed to be 100mb. Worst broadband I have ever had.

I had Virgin for a few years when I was in Uni. They kept increasing my bill by around £3 every so often. I started on a package which was about £23 and ended up paying around £33.50!! (Figures are rough estimates, but as you can see, it went up by half during the 2 year contract.)

is it true that the 200mb service is not supposed to have traffic management? i upgraded last week ago but all i've had is between 40-80mg download speed.

I was with Vm for over 10 years but had to leave due to the regular price hikes they do and better deals elsewhere. I was able to get 36mb plus phone line and talk package for £15. VM wanted over £30. Add a phone to this deal and you're over £30

Also might just be my area but ping was over 150ms on VM and BT line is 16ms. VM used to be in the 16-45ms range a few years back. Download was technically 15mb faster but in real world I don't really notice, it's much of a muchness. You'd need 75-100mb to really notice.

Also 12 months ago I did manage to get a reduction after threatening to leave and two months later they sent me a price hike to where I was before. Lovely. I actually turned down a nice BT sport deal 12 months ago to stay and that's the thanks you get. Was all signed and got refunded from BT, should've stuck with it.

For me at least, all the scare stories of funky old BT lines and random speeds are just rubbish. Plus I notice the much lower ping. Pleased I finally made the jump.

Depends if you take any other package apart from 200 Mbps gamer then traffic management is applied.

You need to be very careful with haggling with VM. Been caught out twice now thinking I would have a 30 day cancellation period, but when I said I wasn't interested in their customer service offers (hoping to speak to retentions) they cut me off straight away!!
So then I had to very quickly get something else sorted.

    Not anymore

There's misunderstanding here. If your speed is dropping low in peak times only (5-11pm) then likely your area has what Virgin term utilisation. This means they have too many people on it for their infrastructure to cope. If you suffer this ring them and once you get utilisation acknowledged they credit your bill. For me mine was dropping sub 20 on a 200 meg package so I immediately cancelled and stuck with BT.
As to Virgin 'guaranteeing' any speeds wired, they don't. They flog more packages knowing an area can be suffering utilisation thus compounding the problem.
If you are in an urban town etc, and suffering utilisation, Virgin is a nightmare and they should be banned from continuing to sell packages.
As to the poster who said he only ever got 40-60, yes the best way to assess speed is buy a cheap cat 6 10- 20 metre lan cable and plug it directly into the router (if far away and you don't have a laptop) to ensure its not the wireless signal that's dodgy, but unless you are far away through walls etc, the new Virgin hub has decent wireless performance. Thus anyone reporting well below expected speeds, could have utilisation issues, as it is rife, so don't assume it's because they are on wireless.
As to traffic management, yes on all packages up to 200 meg (not gamer) they operate traffic management. This may not affect you, and is not related to the utilisation issues. However I was shocked when really just doing speed tests the other week when I had it installed (because it was slow I was doing speed tests a lot, until Virgin admitted my area has utilisation) that Virgin then applied traffic management to my account, crippling the speed even more! They took it off when I complained but I couldn't believe it.
So before you even consider Virgin, consider whether your area has utilisation. Consider whether it is right for a company to be advertising 200 meg speeds and selling to even more customers, when they know an area has utilisation and is effectively already over subscribed and cannot deliver. Then take your choice. Me and my neighbours all cancelled, and I personally would not do business with the company again.
I stress though not every area does suffer utilisation. My friend has it in North Leeds (Alwoodly) and gets 160 meg at peak times. Great for him.
This is a shame as at 8am on a Sunday morning with 200+ meg and 8ms ping it was fantastic. Unfortunately I didn't want to use it then.
Before replying to this saying rubbish, yours is great etc, note you are not in a utilisation area, lucky you. Everyone considering Virgin, please search 'virgin' and 'utilisation' as your due diligence. Please also note that when my neighbour saw my new install and called to cancel his own, he was wrongly told there was no utilisation, he wouldn't have a problem and to reconsider. This was despite Virgin level 2 tech confirming utilisation to me and apologising.
You may not realise you have utilisation. I recommend running speedtest.net at peak times (multiple times) to see what speed you are really getting and whether it is anything like advertised.

Cheers for this. I've just cancelled my Sky TV/Phone & BB, and they were only offering discounted (£14.99/mth) line rental for 10 of 12 months, with free unlimited broadband.

Have been with VM before, and we don't use the house phone much anyway, so gone for this.

Quickstart install kit coming on wednesday.

Scratch that, some retentions chap rang me this morning and asked, why have i cancelled.

I told him the deal, that VM don't believe in loyalty, sob story about looking after the pennines etc and he asked who am i moving to, i told him VM but as a new customer.

He told me he could honour new cust deal + apply the 50 discount back to my account + upgrade me to 70 meg an all. So now i got a cracking deal, considering i dont have down time and itll now be faster. Get in
