    From what I've read, it's 2 x 500GB SATA drives.

    The case is suspiciously big.

Buy two separate 500GB discs - cheaper and less of a disaster in event of failure ... hmmm, but maybe twice the chance of one failing. Anyway, you always pay through the nose for top-capacity discs.

check amazon reviews on 250gb version. I returned mine after 6 months... others appear to have done the same ! I found mine to be unreliable and at times could not access it ! Others have indicated theirs crashed - end of story.

We got two of these in the office last week. Very good looking drive but leaves your finger print marks all over it due to the glossy plastic (might matter to someone!). To answer some of your questons:

    Its a single 1TB drive.
Its slightly smaller than the older editions of external hard drive.

For £20 more, you can get the next edition up, same capacity but with FireWire AND eSata from Amazon:

    Hope this helps.

I just realised that the link I posted to the amazon site is selling for the same price on play, with the £5 voucher and quidco, this would be also an excellent deal if you were looking to future proof your connection abilitys:

Saves spending £60 on an extra 250GB when you can buy the 500GB for £69.99, so £10 extra for 250GB extra!

Those pictures are a bit misleading, that may be the size, but it sure doesn't look as neat as that on your desktop.

I tried putting two next to my monitor and it looked a mess with the cables that run out the back.

I've got a networked version of the 500GB one - and it's been fine for the past 9 months.

Just a warning from a friendly I.T. person - by buying such a large, single HDD, you are (effectively) putting all your eggs in one basket. If/when it fails, all 1TB is gone.

Bare that in mind, and if you are okay with that, and are prepared for that to happen (eg. take backups/etc), then go for it.

A more robust alternative is to look into the NAS/SAN type products on the market that have some kind of RAID ability - either out-of-the-box, or the ones where you add in your own HDDs.

If you are comfortable with all of that, then this is a great deal for a massive amount of data storage!!

    Heat added!

NB: Vibration (and heat) kills HDDs. So make sure you stash it somewhere secure. And let the heads park, and the motor spin down after powering it off, before you move it to another location.

F*** that.. Westend Digi r da worst to ever buy in hard drives.. I know afew ppl who work in Data Recovery places & they even admit that they are not good + they are very veryyy hard to recover your data back.. & so are Lacie tooo!! Keep your hands in your pocket as I've experienced the same before..

I have to pay 1200 pounds to recover all my data back!! on a 1TB I'ts all about Maxtor they are the BEST!!

    I hope this helps out

Why do i think some one that uses "da" instead of "the" probably would not spend £1200 on data recovery ?

I've got 4 external drives - 2 or the original Maxtor One Tough, one of the older WD externals and a USB/Firewire My Book.

The only one I've had any trouble with is one of the Maxtor's! It died. I formatted it, and have been using it for the last 3 years since without a problem!

LIke one of the earlier posters said ... if it's mission critical, there are better solutions, but most of my stuff can be found again so not the end of the World.

I'm looking it getting a big firewire external WD as my drives are all 160 to 320 Gb at the moment.

    Cheers OP.

You were totally shafted with that, I'm not tech head at all but have managed to recover a good dozen external hard drives that belong to friends

Personally I've used W/D,IOMEGA AND LACIE and never had an issue with any (sod's law one will crash today)

Never had any trouble with Seagate or Western Digital drives myself but loads with Maxtor. I don't buy them anymore and now seagate own them am a bit wary of them too. I agree with evapor8 though 2 500gb drives rather than 1TB are more reliable and cheaper. Still a good deal for a terrabyte though, great poser value;-)

My Maxtor now goes clunkty clunk!

Bought 750GB WD to replace for £99

Suppose it depends on your own experience

But wouldn't spend extra £60 for an extra £250gb when £60 buys twice that (500GB)

Hi mcbazza -- can you recommend a good NAS solution?
All the devices I've seen on Amazon seen to get negative reviews (mostly Western Digital NAS devices - although I've never had a problem so far with their basic MyBook drives).

    Is it worth buying a NSLU2 ?
