I've stayed in one in Liverpool and it was really good. We had a family room with it's own bathroom and use of the kitchen (we ate out though). It has a small bar and serves food. It's in a great location, down by the docks and I'd happily stay there again. Great way to get a holiday when you have kids.
That's a really nice one. Stayed there with a group of 5 mates and we had the ensuite room for 6 and it worked out great value.
Other good ones are the one in Bakewell, YHA Haworth in the Lakes, the one at Ironbridge, I've stayed in a few around the Yorkshire Moors for hiking and we are off to Stratford upon Avon in a few weeks for the weekend.
My son spent last weekend in the one in Stratford upon Avon with his rugby team and a load of the parents. Everyone was very complimentary about it - basic rather than luxurious but spotlessly clean

Ooh thanks, that's good to know we have got a long weekend in couple of weeks and it worked out less than £40 per night for the two of us. Looking forward to it!

I confess I was a bit wary, as I'd never stayed in a Youth Hostel before, but I couldn't fault it and wouldn't hesitate to book elsewhere. I had a vision of dormitories full of strangers (which isn't for me!) before being told you can have a private room. I've since looked at hostels in London (only reason for not booking was they didn't have the availability I was looking for). I'd imagine they'd be great value for people with a few kids, as well as groups of friends/family.

They do have traditional bunk rooms for males/females bur I've really noticed them up their game in terms of making the hostels more accessible for families. I think with places like Airbnb etc they had to widen their spectrum to stay current. The Ironbridge one had alot of families there when we stayed and they tend to keep the family rooms away from the others.

Some of them are really old National Trust buildings, and are very quirky. For some of the prices for family rooms for 4, 5, 6 people they are great value. Some people won't like them, but it all depends what you expect.

I'm a big fan of YHA, if you intend to need a place to lay your head & rest up in an evening they are great (docklands I used a lot in the past) then a 5 minute walk up the road for the tube into the heart of london city (if that's your thing).

Safe & they serve you well with odds & ends, basic bar & comfy chairs being the mainstay.. ideal for folk who don't need polished granite bathrooms when making the most out of a destination.

Agreed.
Also (pretty obviously) a one night stay wouldn't be enough, I think a three night stay would be the minumum for me)

It also says 'group bookings are excluded' Anyone seriously this of doing this with vouchers, would be well advised I think to talk to the YHA directly before doing it

Ps the voucher exchange is actually 3 for 1! I've amended the voucher

Good timing, as I'm searching for a large property for a big birthday - looked on one though, and it slept up to 30, and there were three toilets - ugh! Still, for the price, definitely worth considering - thanks for posting.

Glad I could help someone :)
From what I've seen you need to check what the interiors look like. Some of them do look very YHA, bunk beds and the like. Of course, this may not be important to you.
Also you need to check the booking dates very carefully. The prices can vary enormously.

i took my children to st. brevials a while back, although basic, we had a great family room. We were lucky as it only cost about £44 a night. But i understand what you mean dealdiva. Sometimes a good offer comes along :)

YHA have been doing this for a few years now & can be a good deal if good in house chef but varies a lot. I don't think YHA is a cheap break unless you are a single adult sharing a room with strangers - a family room starts at £80 per night in the school holidays! We could only afford to use them when Tesco vouchers could be used in school holidays but not viable now they don't offer this anymore. Even their flagship hostels are very basic at this price - a few years ago YHA sold off a large number of properties to raise money to refurbish the existing ones but that ran out & hostel managers couldn't complete even basic improvements without volunteers. I love the ethos & friendly atmosphere of YHA which is great for single travellers happy to rough it a bit but not good enough for most families.

They're brilliant for family breaks - or certainly the ones we've stayed in are. We've been to Keswick in the Lake District, Snowdonia, Brecon (all on the family special offer for the winter - take a look at their website). We've also used Lee Valley twice (great log cabins), just outside London, for visits to London - the train station is right next door and gets you in to London in 25 mins. We've bought food at all of them and have been pleasantly surprised at the quality and value. I've also signed up to their monthly e-newsletter so they keep me updated with all special offers.

Up to 29th February includes the half term break (13th - 17th Feb around here). I booked a few weeks ago on the £29.95 deal including supper and there was plenty of choice for that week. It did include some of the more upmarket hostels too but the choice has reduced now.

PS You can use Tesco clubcard tokens for the membership.

Or maybe they are aiming at the nearly 29% of children who are younger than compulsory school age.

Maybe - but this offer has been on for weeks (i posted it on here myself). It would seem that there are still loads of rooms available which just simply arent being taken up by these families with under school age children. So time to open this offer up to all. They are excluding certain groups which would generate welcome revenue for them.

The 'up to 6 occupants' is a bit misleading as one of the occupants must be under 18 years old. Also the price is for members only. Non members will have to pay a £3 supplement each. Its a shame about the 'must include a child' rule because this offer is during term time and its getting more and more frowned upon taking children out of school. The offer should be amended to allow adult only parties mid-week. I have emailed YHA about this.

Got to agree with you mate. One wonders do YHL actively promote kids from being out of education then? Shame really, thought it could have been a cheaper way of me getting about and crashing the night. Rather than getting a 50quid bill from travel lodge. lol! Never that simple is it.
