HELP please, toddler leaking through nappies at night

Posted 2nd Dec 2009
If anyone has any advice it would be very appreciated. I have a two year old boy who is no-where near being potty trained, but every night at the moment is leaking through his nappies, he's always done this occasionally but now its every night and i'm starting to despair. when this originally started we tried all different types of nappies and found pampers the best, and he wears two, one on top of the other, but this no longer works, and unfortunately he's already in the largest size. I really don't want to get him up half way through the night if i can help it as i have a 6 week old baby which is disturbing his sleep enough already. He does have a cup of milk before bed, but i've heard that lots of professionals advice not to stop that (something to do with decreasing size of bladder). Has anyone got any other suggestions? feel so sorry for him, he's soaked from armpit to knees and through the bed and can't feel nice.

Have you tried the Huggies Pajama Pants if they do them in his size? they are definitely thicker/more absorbant than a nappy but they may not do them small enough for him.

Sounds like a lot of wee wee !! are you sure his nappies fit properly? not too big or loose around legs and waist?

If you don't cut down his fluid intake somehow this will continue ... you could sit him on the loo & read a short story for 10 mins before bedtime?
How about putting rubber pants on over his nappy?

try these pads inside his usual nappy this worked for my youngest

I used to put extra pads (use sanitary towels if you can't find proper nappy pads) inside a larger size of nappy and that did the trick. I expect it wasn't as comfortable but then again wet bedding and pj's isn't much fun either. I'm not sure on cutting down on fluids is a good idea for any age group, perhaps ask your doctor beforehand.

My 2yr old occasionally has a full sometimes leaky nappy other nights hes dry.
How long is he in his nappy ( like my LO roughly 8pm until 6-7 am). I defintely find pampers baby dry ( normal pampers) much better than active fit at night or easy ups. Not tried others. ( like bedtime pants).
But even though some mornings its like a bowling ball i cant say it really leaks.
Is the nappy on right, is your LO fiddling with tabs ?? I still have mine in bodysuits as feel it keeps nappy in right position , are you suing these or big boys/girls vests.

won't sit on potty at all, tried to bribe with everything, and the rubber pants cut into his legs and marked his legs for days

hope i don't sound negative, but tried a lot of these, but will see if they do pj nappies in his size, fingers crossed

he is in them a long time as in bed for about 12 hours so will get him up in night if i have to just feel bad as not having good night sleep anyway. I did try other brands and none better.
I think nappy on properly cause it is filling front to back, really heavy, and the leak is the overflow and i can't find vests with poppers at the bottom (at a reasonable price) in his size as he's already in 3-4 year old clothes and heading up towards next size

you do need to cut down his fluid intake after tea time, also are his nappies full in the day? my little man never got on with potty, try him with proper toilet with a little step up and toilet seat

i find pampers baby dry nappies the best too.

Have you tried the bed mats?

my first one did this so i changed him in his sleep. try it one night. usually they dont realise or even if they do they go quickly back to sleep.

the biggest size... so you have size 6 yes?

Might be worth a trip to the docs.... thats a lot of liquid output for his lil kidneys to cope with.

You can also use those bed sheets made by pampers... they go under his bedsheet and may save the mattress from getting wet xx

Poor lil man, does he gets upset that he's wet?

hence why i asked about nappies during the day, if he is holding it in, then hes ready to be out of nappies during the day

yeah he's in size 6. he is a very big boy for his age and has always taken in a lot of fluid (and food )
i have mattress protectors under teh sheets already so not worried about that, i just feel bed for him, and to be honest could do without washing all his pjs and bedding every day (especially with a new born in the house)
and he won't go anywhere near the toilet either, he's not bothered when he has a full nappy which is why i don't think is ready to potty train

Dont push him to potty train if he isnt ready.... as that'll backfire.

Do take him a quick visit to the doc as a simple blood test will reassure you there's nothing wrong with his kidneys making him drink a lot ( and so wee a lot too ).

Do you check on him when you go to bed? I'd change his nappy then too, even if he's sleeping, it shouldn't disturb him too much if he knows its you. And first thing in the morning before he's had chance to wake up and think about having a drink.

I'd be more worried about it if it was distressing him but if its just a matter of the extra work from washing the bedsheets and that... then just make sure theres just the sheet and the pillowcase and the duvet cover/blanket to wash, no extra teddies cushions etc to limit how much you're having to do xxx

my little one was like this - i used to change their nappy when i went to bed - and it helped - he didn't ever wake or remember it. Also try reducing his drink slightly so he has less. It usually takes about an hour between drinking and the wee ready to come out - so can you bring his drink time forward and have his story after it rather than at the same time etc. I also had to swap nappy type - but regualrly - pampers would be fine for weeks, then Huggies would work - and even own brand ones - might be worth trying to swap again.

What about changing him when you are up with the baby if he doesn't wake - might help - and although a hassle much easier thn washing and drying sheets etc every day !

    Good luck Hun

my little guy used to drink gallons upon a gallons, always had a drink in his hand, but always been a poor eater, mainly due to his fluid intake no doubt, but always restricted his fluid intake after teatime

our health visitor said on my little uns 2 year check that cutting down fluids in afternoon not stopping him tho if he usually has 8 ozs squash milk or water whatever just give him 4 as hes only drinking out of habit just half it do a check on a baby site to see how much fluid your little un needs and i guess its just the case of restricting fluids all toddlers do things by habit but as someone else said id definetely change him through the night 12 hours is a long while if hes peeing loads he will have better sleep if not disturbing himself weeing anyway, good luck chick i know this weather is no fun for bed stripping every day.

I do think they need to make a bigger nappy size....

My kiddies have all been skinny lil things but we coulda still done with a bigger fit just before they were completely dry.

I think this is the best idea for now, it's surprising how they can hardly notice during their sleep!

Also, if he's drinking regularly all day perhaps giving him his bedtime drink an hour earlier and putting on a fresh nappy once he's had a wee would help. He could still have a little sip of water if he gets thirsty.

My almost 4 year old son has only had a few dry nights so I've had to go back to the pull ups and I know how difficult it can be. Some books tell you go wake them up to go on the toilet, but I just couldn't do that!

Hope your little man has more comfy sleeps soon! Good luck!

I've just spotted these recommended on a forum, have you tried them?

Bit late but a thought crossed my mind, we have children from a disabled school come over to us for sports and they wear nappies so must be available in larger sizes but at a specialist supplier, some of the kids are huge too. Your health visitor would know or ask at your local special school because they always have to keep a stock and must buy them somewhere. Hope this helps. Good luck x
