The buck should stop with the senior officers who fed him the story.

No. The buck stops with the editor of the newspaper. He ran with it, it's his responsibility.

Like him or hate him....he does deserve an apology from south yorkshire police as they lied to him in order to discredit Liverpool fans.

    It's already been proven...

"The Hillsborough Independent Inquiry report, which was published two weeks ago, said there was no evidence to support the allegations in the paper.

It stated: "The documents disclosed to the panel show that the origin of these serious allegations was a local Sheffield press agency informed by several SYP officers, an SYP Police Federation spokesperson and a local MP.

"They also demonstrate how the SYP Police Federation, supported informally by the SYP chief constable, sought to develop and publicise a version of events that focused on several police officers' allegations of drunkenness, ticketlessness and violence among a large number of Liverpool fans."

Well the chief constable had an agenda so that is probably correct but he still does not deserve an apology- I do not believe for one minute that the scabby sun did not embellish the given details- just to make for a good story

Funny how people let their own personal prejudice get in the way of facts

personal prejudice infers that I'm the only one that feels this way about him- I don't mind that you think that because karma will catch up with him like the rest of the disgusting team at the sun- never let the truth get in the way of a good story

No it doesn't, I'm sure there are many who will feel the way you do.

Don't get me wrong, he's a turd and the sun is a muck racking rag...but as a journalist he showed integrity for not divulging his sauce and took a great deal of flack for not doing so.

So how should editors verify stories before going to print?
  19. slamdunkin's avatar
Usually they send a reporter to go and question people, but I'm not sure how they would have gone about cross examining the head of south Yorkshire police and the MP who backed the story up

He showed no integrity whatsoever. He overruled the subeditor and changed the headline to indicate that what was reported was the cast-iron truth rather than what was relayed to him and other reporters, which is what those under him wanted to print. He has had years to apologise for what he did, considering the very good living he made out of other people's grief.

Everything he did, he did for the headlines and £££ and to hell with journalistic integrity.

That's nice. Sort of like burgling a house and then tidying up afterwards. I give him as little credit for that as his current campaign to make this all about himself, as if he were the aggrieved party.

The guy is a bawbag, Murdoch forced him to apologise years ago and he said he only done it because he was told to.

Speaking five years ago he said he was not sorry for the way his paper … Speaking five years ago he said he was not sorry for the way his paper covered events at Hillsborough.Appearing on BBC1's Question Time, he said he only apologised at the time because he was told to by his paper's proprietor, Rupert Murdoch. That followed comments reportedly made at a private dinner where he was alleged to have said: "I'm not sorry then and I'm not sorry now."

On a general principle, an apology might seem worthy.

The fact that he overruled the subeditor in order to gain maximum headline exposure, regardless of what the real truth might be and bearing in mind just how outspoken and arrogant McKenzie can often be, he should simply take things on the chin.

He hasn't exactly been open himself in the past few days about talking to the press and media either, which makes him look a little foolish.
  26. slamdunkin's avatar
Don't get me wrong....I'm chuffed to see him getting the same treatment he has dished out to others. But for those officials who started the evil rumours to be Sean as the liars they are, they need to apologise to him in order not to hide from their own accountability.

It's rather convenient that MacKenzie is taking the public flack whilst Tory MP Sir Irvine Patnick and SYP hides from the spotlight.

Read the last 2 pages of his letter that he sent to lord justice taylor

The MP should also be accountable.

But Mckenzie said he was forced to apologise the first time and then retracted it after the Taylor report, he actually stated that no matter what Taylor enquiry showed, we all know it was the Lpool fans who were responsible anyway.
That was not long after he had resigned as editor and needed to beef up his career with a bit of controversy. No thought given to the hills borough families there....:(

For that type of behaviour, he definitely should never be on the box or radio again. Pull the plug on his income, I am sure he won't suffer.
