Do the police use cameras like that nowadays, and take pics of number plates as you drive past or would I have been stopped if I had been caught?
I know they use cameras sometimes out the back of white vans and also the ones that are fixed by the side of roads, but wasn't sure if they use them manually.....If so it could have been an expensive day.........

probably a hairdryer !

Yes they do use them like that from my experience...

A couple of weeks ago a policeman was at the edge of the road with one of these guns! He had a motorbike though and was on his own.

First time I have seen them do it like that.

I agree; laws and limits are good, but both sides must abide by them.

For the times (and there seem to be a fair few) that the 'authorities don't (or can't be bothered) to abide by the very rules they have set up, this website is useful

They do use speed camera's by hand still but they have to pull you over.

considering a speed gun is a type of camera, and not a weapon. i think you were being monitored for how fast you were going.

different types of speed guns

i think people should be pulled for going to slow, i hate being stuck behind someone in a 40zone doing 30 its so annoying. im a careful driver and never drive over the limit so i always get people up my backside, but id rather be safe with my kids in the car. i might go over slightly but as soon as i notice i slow down. im constantly checking my speed.

Umm can't see any reason for limits or laws myself, what good do they do once your out of town?

Erm, they're supposed to stop you from going to fast and thus making it less likely that you'll crash or cause an accident? Not that I'd particularly worry if someone was going too fast and topped themselves, but what about other drivers/pedestrians that could get hurt? Bit of a retarded comment tbh...

Surely a good motorist drives to the conditions/ enviroment, its daft saying "I stick exactly to the upper speed limit" thinking you are perfect when in fact if conditions change like for eg parked cars/kids playing/animals you should slow down . A speed limit is a max limit, don't always think you should stick to it ffs

if i was driving where kids were then obviously i would slow down im not going to drive 30mph down a street with kids running about like some morons do. im not saying i am a perfect driver but i try to be as careful as i can for my sake and other road users and pedestrians. i said i never go over the limit not under, if the road is clear then theres no reason why you should drive at 30 in a 40 zone.

No speed limits here and insurance is far cheaper than where you are, (IE well under £1k at 16) which implys speeding isn't dangerous and adds to road safety because people are more observant

So when you go driving you scout the road ahead first to make sure there's no kids about? How do you know whether or not there are kids around? And why only worry about kids? What about other people?

Hopefully it was a speed camera, and I would suggest you take the speed awareness course if it was, may discourage you from speeding in future. Speed limits are there for a reason.

well yeah when im driving of course im looking ahead looking out for potential dangers, when i say children its because you cant see children if there stood behnd a car but adults are more visable. im on about driving down streets not main roads, to be honest kids shouldnt be playing near main roads in the first place and if there are pedestrians about they will be visable on the pavement. i slow down when necessary, im not going to drive around at 20mph just incase someone happens to jump infront of my car. i dont get what your trying to say, am i bad for driving at 30mph in a 30zone or because i said i dont like being stuck behind someone doing 30mph in a 40zone. if i see a hazard then i will slow down if not i will carry on at the correct speed limit.

DRIVE FAST!

i dont get what your trying to say

What I'm trying to say is that what you've said doesn't make you sound like a safe driver, regardless of how you actually drive.
if i was driving where kids were then obviously i would slow down

This comment suggests that you only slow down if there's kids about. My point was "How do you know when kids are about? And why slow down only for kids?"
if i see a hazard then i will slow down

A safe driver slows down because he/she anticipates a hazard; slowing down when you see one could be too late.

I'm not judging your driving - I don't know whether you're good or bad, & I'm in no position to judge your standard of driving. What I'm saying is that what you say doesn't sound like the wise words of a good driver.
#28
if i was to list everything i slow down for i could be here all night, obviously i dont know when kids are about but if im driving on a main road i am more likely to see them and can slow down if i think they might be about to run across the road, where as if i am driving down a street kids are more likely to be playing out and can drive at a lower speed the reason i said about kids is the guy who quoted me first mentioned it not me. i know what im trying to say and must be wording it in the wrong way.

Isle of man, once your out of town/village the only limit is your nerve

Firstly...no law once you get out of town, hope someone comes and murders you.

Secondly...only limit is your nerve...COCK...you still do 30 then?

p.s. The COCK is meant in the Top Gear sense...not too rude or nasty.

So when you go driving you scout the road ahead first to make sure there's no kids about? How do you know whether or not there are kids around? And why only worry about kids? What about other people?

well yeah when im driving of course im looking ahead looking out for potential dangers, when i say children its because you cant see children if there stood behnd a car but adults are more visable. im on about driving down streets not main roads, to be honest kids shouldnt be playing near main roads in the first place and if there are pedestrians about they will be visable on the pavement. i slow down when necessary, im not going to drive around at 20mph just incase someone happens to jump infront of my car. i dont get what your trying to say, am i bad for driving at 30mph in a 30zone or because i said i dont like being stuck behind someone doing 30mph in a 40zone. if i see a hazard then i will slow down if not i will carry on at the correct speed limit.
pink-ka seems to think the number on the circular road sign is the correct speed to drive at, this is not so and it isn't the "correct speed" but the max speed allowed, if people wish to drive at 35 in a 40 it gives you no right to sit on their backside being annoying

i dont get up there backside, as i know how annoying it is as i said in an earlier post. if you were stuck behind someone doing 20mph in a 30 or 30mph in a 40 on a long stretch of road im sure it would annoy most people.
