Read MoreHenry Hoovers are canister vacuum cleaners manufactured by Numatic International. The models are instantly recognisable with their chunky bodies, human-like smiles and model names on the cap or head. Henrys use large-capacity Microfibre Hepa-Flo bags (the first vacuums to do so). These tough bags are designed not to tear or release the contents when changed and cope with many more activities than just hoovering up dust.
The first electric suction vacuum cleaner was invented around the turn of the 20th century while the first Numatic hoover sporting a face appeared on the market in 1979. It was christened Henry in 1981. The smile and name were a marketing ploy aimed at the family market. Since its introduction, over 8 million Henrys have been sold around the world at a rate of around 20,000 a week. Numatic was founded by Chris Duncan - he's still the company's sole owner and regularly features on the list of Britain's Top 100 Entrepreneurs.
Unsurprisingly for a product that has been a family favourite for over 40 years, Henry Hoover gets mainly positive reviews from trusted sites such as The Clean Home Guide, CLEVERHAB and Trustpilot (where 94% of reviewers rate it as excellent). Cleaning efficiency and value for money are the main talking points.
Since its launch, the Henry range has become something of an icon in the cleaning world. Although features vary from model to model there are some common ones that include:
Henry Hoover is a tough guy with some still going strong after 20 years of use. They are easy to maintain and repair.
Depending on the model, capacities range from 6-litres to 15-litres.
The Henry Allergy and the Henry Micro are designed to tackle allergens, while Henry Pet and Harry are perfect for pet owners and Henry XL Plus is ideal if you're planning some DIY work.
Motors vary depending on which model you have chosen and what it's designed to do. Most models run at a cost-effective and quiet 620W (72 decibels).
Suction capability ranges from 1750mm H2O to 2300mm H2O.
While hoses vary in length, they are all tough, flexible and should be long enough to cope with vacuuming up and down the stairs. Accessory packs are available that can extend the reach of your hose.
Apart from the Henry XL Plus (12.5 metres), the range has a standard cable of 10 metres. This gives an average operating range of over 26 metres, enough to hoover each floor of an average house without having to switch sockets. Newer models have incorporated an automatic cable retract feature - something lacking on earlier ones.
Henry Hoovers are designed to be used with Numatic HepaFlo bags. Changing Henry Hoover bags is a breeze. The bags are self-seal so dust and debris stay where they should until it is disposed of. The bags are reasonably priced and depending on usage, one should hold up to four months worth of dust! They can be bought in high-street retailers or online. (While the Henry can be used without a bag this isn't recommended as it shortens the life of the filters, plus picking up and emptying a Henry can be tricky work.)
Henrys use the innovative TriTex Filtration System (with some variation depending on model) - dust and debris go where they should, helping to maintain the performance and capacity of the vacuum cleaner.
Each cleaner in the range comes with a collection of tools while extra Henry Hoover parts can be purchased. Standard tools are brushes, crevice tools and steel tubes in different sizes. All models now feature onboard storage.

While there are 15 models in the Numatic range, nine of them carry the Henry name. These include the:
Henry: Henry HVR160 is the original vacuum in the family, instantly recognisable with its sporty red colour and smiling face. This is the perfect multitasking hoover for the average family home.
Henry Xtra: Also red, Henry Xtra has a little more capacity and a slightly larger operating range.
Henry Pet: Having a cat or dog makes more work with their moulting fur and hard-to-shift odours. Henry Pet is designed to shift these odours with its Charcoal Activated MicroFresh Filter while the Hairo Brush picks up all of your pets' hair and fur.
Henry Eco: Although the eco and energy-efficiency of the Henry Eco come with slightly less suction and power, it still delivers a high-quality performance. It's definitely more than enough for the average home (unless you have several pets).
Henry Cordless: If you're fed up with trailing cables then pick the Henry Cordless. Its run-time of 30 minutes is more than enough for hoovering the whole house while the battery takes just 3.5 hours to fully recharge.
Henry Allergy: Henry Allergy greatly reduces your exposure to allergens if they cause you problems. Its FreeFlo Tool and 3-Stage Hepa Filtration help keep your allergy symptoms under control.
Henry XL Plus: Are you tackling big cleaning jobs and DIY projects or do you want a cleaner that will cope with your office space? If so, the generous 15-litre capacity and 12.5-metre cable of the Henry XL Plus definitely make life easier.
Other models in the range are Henry Micro, Henry Wash and the multitasking Hetty and Hetty Yellow. Charles and George tackle both wet and dry cleaning, Harry also copes with pet hair and odours or, if you want a good cleaning job at a budget price, pick James.
If the suction on your hoover isn't as good, check whether the bag needs replacing. Henry Hoover dust bags are self-sealing and designed to be disposed of rather than emptied. To change the bag:
Release the two clips holding the cap (head) to the drum and lift off the cap.
Lift out the white filter and remove the dust bag.
Seal the bag and throw away.
Open a new bag.
Fit the bag's rubber seal over the tube inside the drum.
Replace the filter and hoover cap and relock the clips.
To help you get the best use out of whichever Henry Hoover model you select, Numatic offers an extensive range of accessories. Useful ones include:
While using compatible bags with Henry Hoovers is advisable, they will operate efficiently without one providing the filters are cleaned regularly. The manufacturers, however, recommend that its own (Numatic) bags are always used to extend the life of your hoover.
Numatic HepaFlo bags are recommending and these are not designed to be reusable.
Yes - a new Henry Hoover comes with some bags to get your cleaning started.
Some Henry Hoover models are more than just vacuum cleaners. For example, the Henry Wash can shampoo carpets and upholstery, suck up water and even unblock the sink!
Although your Henry Hoover carries a warranty of two years, it should last for eight years or more depending on its usage and the care you take of it.
Henry Hoovers are widely available and always well-priced. You'll find a cheap Henry Hoover at the Numatic website itself which is always competitive with other retailers such as Amazon, Currys PC World, Argos and Robert Dyas. High street stores will hold a Henry Hoover sale at regular intervals throughout the year while online, most will have daily offers. To get the cheapest Henry Hoover, however, shop during the Black Friday Sale in late November or pick up a Henry Hoover discount code at hotukdeals.
