sorted byI agree and as much as I love the Halfords Pro range I've never trusted the 12 point sockets (I've rounded off a few bolts with them) I'm slowly replacing my set with random 6 points I find but I don't know why they can't replace the archaic imperial (surely everyone with a classic car has already got a decent set) with metric 6 points.
The problem with 12 and 6 point sockets is that all of the exerted pressure still ends up at the weakest point of the nut/bolt: the corners.
Try some spline sockets - the number of spline varies but they usually exert pressure more centrally on the faces of the fastener and so less rounding and the bonus ability of being able to undo already rounded nuts and bolts.
I'm sure that Halfords have a 3/8 set of them in this sale very cheap.
Well that is the case with the 12 point but 6 points don't grip on the corners. 6 points have full contact with the entire head bolt so they are the most secure.

It's not possible to have full face contact - regardless of how good a fit the actual socket is it still has to be bigger than the nut/bolt. so as soon as you exert rotary movement all of the pressure is on the end of the faces - the corners.
Well made socket only decease that corner pressure if you are working on well made fasteners. Spline sockets, while not perfect actually make the gap work in your favour.
If you look at the first photo on the link you provide the profile of the 6 point socket is actually 6 large splines - note the curve of the faces rather that being flat. (edited)
