Synopsis : Television really doesnt come much better than this. Criminally ignored by far, far too many people, The Wire has proven itself to be that rarest of things: an intelligent, clever, character-driven show, thats lasted more than one season. With the help of detective Shakima Greggs, the two do everything they can to bring down a powerful druglord... A television series created by a crime reporter David Simon and former detective Ed Burns.

I can recommend this series. I've just finished watching season 4 and it's very good. Gritty "real" cop stuff.

Me, as leader of the pack, wholeheartedly recommend this series...

This was the most popular show on the urban scene, a lot more to it than what one thinks.

The best TV show ever made. Bar none.

series 2 wasn't all that but this is still an awesome show, nothing gets close to its realism and the acting is superb.

Just finished watching series one on FX, brilliant. One of the best acted dramas out there.

Best series I've ever seen, bar none. Excellent acting and realistic story - much more to it than there may seem at first (e.g. it's just a cop show ;-))

At that price, buy buy buy

Just buy them. Possibly the best tv series I ever seen. I paid between £20 and £30 for each series, and that felt like a bargain, the quality is that high.

Im on epi 3 of Season 2 and nothing special so far.

But Season 1 was fantastic. Easily up there as the best HBO shows with Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Sopranos.

Season 2 is definitely the weakest but i like them all

Superb series. I must have watched each boxset three times each. Just so much depth.

Season two does start slow but part of that is the juxtaposition between the gangs in S1 and the Stevedores in S2. David Simon wanted to show the whole of Baltimore's problems, not just the black communities.

At that price you can't afford not to buy these if you love quality long-form drama. Well found!

One thing I hate about boxsets like these tho, is that I'm sure that they can fit all those episodes on 2-3 dvds. But no, they like to put 2 episodes on each disc.

I know I'm probs the only person that gets annoyed by that. Sopranos is bad like that, but not as bad as the Wire.

I've just watched Season 1 on FX and thought it was brilliant. I struggled with the street 'slang' at the start but found myself hooked. Season 2 started on FX on Sunday and I shall start watching it any minute now!

(OK - I fancy McNulty!  )

Well yeah - they can but then it wouldnt be DVD quality. True DVD quality should be a max of 2 hours per dual layer disk, hence 2-3 episodes per disk.

The Link above seems to suggest that the UK R2 release is not the one to get due to problems with artefacting because of the conversion from NTSC to PAL ?

How is this in the real world when actually watching the R2 UK DVD's anyone notice anythign bad or off putting enough to consider buying the Region 1 version instead ?

    Thanks

I would guess they'll be on FX in about 1/2 a year's time. They are currently repeating all the episodes, and have just started season 2, so you'll have to be patient if you don't wnat to buy them.
