Levi's: Your Guide to Finding the Best Deals, Sales and Offers on Levi Jeans, Jackets and Much More
Just a few clothing brands are beyond mere fashion. Levi Strauss & Co, to give this company its full name, is one of them. When you buy a pair of Levi's, you're buying into the heritage of a firm with a long background in classic workwear. A history dating back to the 19th century Californian Gold Rush means these products are about much more than a great pair of jeans or the perfect denim jacket. Whether it's a t shirt you're after or a classic hoodie, in men's, women's or children's sizes and styles, Levi's name is a by-word for robust, no-nonsense style from one of the most celebrated names in casual clothing.
The History Behind the Brand: From the Gold Rush to Levi 501 Jeans
This is a company with one truly central product, known only by a number: 501, the serial number on a range of jeans that have been made in largely the same way since 1890. There may be many variations on the 501 style today, skinny, tapered or stretch for instance but the intention remains the same: to provide the wearer with robust, well-made, virtually unbreakable jeans.
This form follows function aesthetic is what defines a classic. These are jeans beyond style, and the reason is the long history behind every single pair that the company makes today.
German immigrant Levi Strauss ran a fabric company in the days when San Francisco was young and when workers required hard-wearing gear for their equally hard lives, not least in the California Gold Rush.
The trouble was that conventional trousers tended to tear, even when made of denim, of which Levi Strauss & Co was already a supplier. The solution came when a client started using rivets to repair torn trousers. Levi Strauss had the money to take out a patent on this process, and the unlikely idea of riveted jeans was born. Check your pair today: the rivets on the classic styles will be there, the same as they've always been, except those around the back pockets which were removed because people found them uncomfortable when sitting down.
The patent for the riveted jeans, famously celebrated as US Patent 139,121, was registered in 1873 and the patented jeans were heavily marketed among workers to become an instant hit throughout California. Until the 1920s, jeans wearers would typically still be working men, with women's styles coming along much later, such as lumberjacks, cowboys and workers on America's expanding railway system.
The first jeans fashion craze came in the 1920s as prosperous residents of the US east coast travelled west to experience ranch life as tourists. They often came back with pairs of patented riveted jeans as souvenirs. The slow but sure movement of jeans - and particularly 501 jeans - from workwear to trendy casual wear had begun.
Remarkably, another boost for the company came during the Second World War, when denim jeans were restricted to people doing work rated as aimed at the country's defence. This, you might say, is another part of the company's legend that's a part of every product that they sell today.
The real boom years, though, came with the advent of rock 'n' roll and the birth of youth culture, first during the 1950s and then into the boom years of the 1960s and 1970s. This included the company's "shrink to fit" ranges, still available through special order today. The idea was that you would buy a pair of jeans a size or two too big and that they'd fit when you washed them. True believers would wear them in a hot bath, shrinking the jeans literally to fit!
The growth of the company and its products was exponential. As the Second World War ended, there were just 15 salespeople and two manufacturing plants, both in the US. Three decades later, Levi Strauss & Co had fifty factories and offices in 35 countries. Those 15 salespeople had become 22,000.
There's a straight historical line between every product the company makes today and those first pairs of jeans. The company's headquarters remain in San Francisco. Even as it's expanded its product range way beyond denim jeans - to embrace women's and children's ranges, accessories and shoes among many others - the key attributes of those first pairs of jeans made by the first workers that Levi Strauss employed remain the same: they are robust classics, with a heritage beyond disposable fashion. There are those who say their Levi's are for life, that they would wear no other jeans brand. Who are we to contradict them?
Are Levi's and Levi Strauss the Same?
Yes, Levi Strauss & Co. is the company who own the Levi's Brand of Denim Jeans. Both get their name from Levi Strauss, the German immigrant who co-founded the company in 1853. Levi Strauss & Co. also own several other clothing brands including Dockers, Signature by Levi Strauss & Co., and Denizen. Not all of these clothing brands are available in the UK, but those that available have dedicated hotukdeals pages where all the best deals, offers and sales are collected so you can save on your purchases!
How Do You Know If Levi's Are Real or Genuine?
A pair of Levi Strauss & Co jeans is a pair of Levi Strauss & Co jeans, right? Not necessarily. When it comes to the company's jeans, which remain their key product, there are many fakes around. Fear not. There are easy ways to make sure that you're buying the real thing. Check that:
Tab – There's the signature red tab on the righthand back pocket, in some ranges it's green, yellow or white.
Stitching – The stitching around that tab is robust. Beware though, forgers have been known to sew a genuine label onto a fake pair of jeans!
Leather Patch – There's a high-quality leather patch on the waistband.
Embossed Buttons and Rivets – Genuine Levis will include branding on their rivets and buttons. Each should have the company's initials and origins, "LS&Co, SF" or LFSF, on it.
Material – Whatever product you're buying, the denim or other materials are of the highest quality. This is a brand known for its enduring and rigorous quality control. Fakes, obviously, don't. If it doesn't feel right, don't buy.
We'd also advise buying your products from this world-leading clothing manufacturer from either their own website or a reputable retailer such as John Lewis, Debenhams or House of Fraser.
While genuine products may appear to demand a premium price, remember there are always cheap deals available. Make a habit of checking the hotukdeals' listings regularly for flash discounts and sales.

How to Wash Levi's Jeans
The company's chief executive once said that wearers should never wash Levi jeans. That's right: never. He told an interviewer that he uses a toothbrush to "spot clean" any stains. You might not want to go that far, but the point is an important one. Don't automatically wash your jeans every week, the chief executive is suggesting, because it can harm the denim. Every ten years? Think about it, he says.
You might be shuddering at this no-launder notion, even if it will give you Levi denim products the much-desired patina of age. If so, the company itself suggests that when you do wash your treasured jeans, make sure you use a gentle washing product and consider a lower temperature if you want to keep the original colour and texture intact. Many jeans wearers turn theirs inside out before washing to preserve them.
Another tip is to avoid the tumble dryer. Instead, hang the washed jeans outside if you can, preferably in the shade to prevent bleaching by the sun - or place on an air dryer. It'll take longer, but you'll also be lengthening the life of your jeans.
In short, the less you wash your Levi denim products, the better! Be a bit more casual about laundering, and your jeans will live longer.
