For the HP trade in, has anyone tried purchasing a new 9 inch tablet on Amazon (or other site) and use that as the trade in device? In other words does it technically have to be an old, used device or can it be a 'new' one too?

Work just gave me an HP Elitebook with an i5 - how does this compare as looking for something for personal use - did wonder about an HP Envy 13 but they're pricey!
The EliteBooks are business computers, whereas this is very much a consumer model. The build quality of the EliteBooks, ProBooks etc. is a lot higher and it's something I'm sure you'd notice if you used both.

Thanks - I did wonder if that may be the case, so to speak. Is the EliteBook or Envy 13 better? The EliteBook looks to be more expensive, yet doesn't have a 1080p sceen and has less RAM?

Just looked and it is in stock. Can anyone tell me if the keypad is gloss or mat and if the letters are large and clear (preferrably white and not grey) please before I buy it. Thanks.

Matt black finish with white lettering.
Ive got a HP Pavilion dv6-6b50sa which has been more than what i use it for,is this model the next gen from mine ? albeit an i5 where as mines an i3.The reason i ask is i would like the newer version of what i have as its been very good, whilst im in no rush to change its still worth looking and watching the price.

Not knocking this deal, just making you aware you can get the LG G3s for ~£20 more, screen size is much the same I know it's only 8GB but you can use an SD card.

The g3s is a much worse phone, the g2 beats it in every way. Look at the specs and reviews. G3s is ridiculously overpriced, when it's pretty much the same as a moto g.
In my experience, Amazon Warehouse Deals items are either brand new or in horrible condition. There is no middle ground.
Good phone but not for long time usage...I have it since 13 months at beginning I loved it, it has slowed down considerably (I don't have many apps..), I am thinking to rectify it by installing custom rom. battery dies 60% quicker (shame cant change it either). Used to get 2 days of normal use and now I have to charge it after 8 hours (reduces to 10% after 8 hours from being fully charge). It has been an excellent phone however in performance..

Got my Like New white delivered today! Pristine with all covers. Sweet:)
Thanks to the OP LuckyDavid for this post. Cheers for the heads-up, really appreciate it. Here's why. I received mine on Thursday last week and it is fantastic. The box looked a bit grubby, but that's all, still perfectly intact and apparently "Used - Very Good". I thought I would take the punt and I'm so glad I did as the phone is brand spanking new with all the original cables, accessories and protective stickers on it. £132 for a perfect G2. I came from a Nexus 4 and I prefer this already, the battery life is brilliant, so much better.
So thanks again buddy, kudos, heat and a big smile from "sunny" Cardiff. 8)

Does the AOSP keyboard not do that natively, I thought it did? anyway, Swiftkey will, and it will 'learn' from your gmail etc (if you let it) for your writing style to speed up your typing

Mine came yesterday. Opened Amazon box to find a nice Grade A G3 oO Very very happy :)
Me too! Very chuffed. Brand new accessories and barely looks used at all. How are you finding the battery life? Think I've spoilt by my Moto G 2013 a bit on that front.
After installing a few software updates I'm now on the latest lollipop V20H software and the battery seems fine. Getting around 4-5 SOT, I'm sure it will last a day easy with my medium usage so I'm very happy. I'm also coming from a Moto G 2013 so I'm expecting a drop in battery performance.
On the first day the phone was running pretty hot and the battery was depleting fast. However, after disabling a few unnecessary Google apps and getting rid of Facebook messenger (which somehow automatically installed itself despite not being on my previous phone!) it's fine. Apparently rooting is pretty safe and simple and vastly improves the battery life even more. Might try it at a later stage.

You need to do more than just root though.

I bought one of the £150 black friday 16gb's and it's a fantastic phone, but as has been said already, the extra capacity on this model isn't worth shelling out the same kind of money that you can pick up it's successor for.
Personally for those people thinking about upgrading from the G2 I'd go with the same way of thinking that I've been told - don't upgrade to the following version, wait one more and then do it (unless your current phone is on it's last legs). With the price of these handsets it's not really worth dropping such a wad of cash to get the latest one (I'm talking more about when they're new, the G3 is soon to be replaced) when you take into account the performance improvements. For me though, having a removable battery and sd card slot would make me think twice about upgrading to this model - it's pretty unusual for companies to make such radical alterations to their flagship phones.
I'd say if you want a phone but are willing to wait about a year, wait for the Ara.
If Ara is released to the public within the next three years, then I'll buy a hat and eat it.
You better buy a hat then. The first public trials are starting in Puerto Rico later this year: http://www.gizmag.com/project-ara-puerto-rico-trial/35632/

A public trial pencilled in for Puerto Rico in the second half of 2015 is a long way off mass market availability.

Three years - I stand by that.

BTW, I would love to buy a hat and eat it if it meant getting my hands on one any time soon. . .

This video is a good guide that shows how to update the LG G2 to Lollipop.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fLHAeJuti0
you have to have a PC and go on the lg web site and customer support page for your phone to download the software onto a PC then plug in you phone to update it.
Well my phone broke but I had insurance on it and they couldn't repair it and sent me a brand new 32gb version. Then I considered selling it but the phone is too good. I'm gonna keep it as a back up since I had to get an lg g4 due to the fact the insurance took a nearly a month. The G2 is still blazing fast and has much better battery life than the G4. Easily last 2 days.

Heat added.
Good price, great cashback.

The hard drive isn't really a drawback in my mind. Most laptops in this bracket are going to be used for web browsing and general document work. Maybe the odd game on Facebook or Solitare. In a budget end laptop I'd rather have a lower speed hard drive with lower power usage to help with battery life.

And with the USB ports, it would be nicer to have another USB 3, but the uptake has been pretty slow and backward compatibility with USB 2 devices is less than impressive. So it's not a bad balance, for a budget laptop. And nothing that a small hub can't fix. All round I'd say this is a bargain piece of kit. Plus (not biased by being an ex HP engineer here at all), the HP laptop kit that I have owned and worked on over the past few years has been pretty sturdy stuff. (With the exception of power supplies, which I noticed had a habit of biting the bullet unnecessarily quickly).
Yeah there could be some good i5 refurb deals around.

Will include a comparison of the more popular i3/i5 models found on most retailers, just to give some idea of how they perform against each other:

Absolute bargain.

Got one a few months ago and have the G3's firmware running on it and it looks and works like an absolute dream.
I just bought one, was wondering what to do next, are you still recommending the G3 firmware?
Did you root yours?
If you have a new one that has not been updated then it will have VuTalk installed. Take note that if you allow automatic updates or update the firmware you will probably lose this feature permanently. I lost it it through the phone being set to automatically update apps. It then automatically un-installed itself. Once it has been un-installed it can not be re-installed so be sure you do not want this app before setting phone to automatic updates.
Thanks, but I don't have it on my G2 (or are you talking about the G3 ROM?).
It never updates, or maybe it did when I 1st set up the phone and didn't notice (how was I supposed to know).
However, after watching youtube about vutalk I don;t miss it.

What about my original question, is the G3 ROM better?
Any improvements to the camera?
I find the camera to be very low quality, not better or worse than my Moto G.
I was expecting a 1st class phone but not so sure anymore.

Yup - so good that it has a yellow band on its screen, crap support and also hard to get hold off due to miserly production. Plus go on the forum and theres too many complaints on it already. I was waiting for the OnePlus to come out before I got this and its the best decision phone wise - battery on this is a beast!

Great phone but my only gripe is he slow focus on the camera in low light conditions.....is really slow thus if taking action shots most are blurred....outside day light performance is great.....however with the g3 out this phone should be well below £200 by now ....so I don't thinks its a bargain price.

The only difference being that you cannot get a oneplus for love nor money, and it has selective 4g networks. Also, I don't go by what review sites say. moot points really...

didnt mean to just suggest the oneplus only, but if a new spec phone can cost as little as 250, then a phone thats nearly 12 months old should be less

Why?

a good phone but come on(old model now), on hot deals for the last 2 months at this price(prob 16 but 32 makes no diff really ). hot deal no no no.
the oneplus one (better phone so the review sites say) already starts at 250ish

The only difference being that you cannot get a oneplus for love nor money, and it has selective 4g networks. Also, I don't go by what review sites say. moot points really...

didnt mean to just suggest the oneplus only, but if a new spec phone can cost as little as 250, then a phone thats nearly 12 months old should be less

Why?

How do you unexpire a deal ? The original deal is available of amazon.de !
pdug, thanks for the update. Good to know. Ive left it on the standard EU firmware and type in *#*#4636#*#* when I feel I need 4G for tethering, which has been 4 times so far. When I get fed up with doing that, I'll consider cyanogenmod fw.

KP2013 - good news about your phone ?

Incase anyone is wondering, I bought one of these from amazon.de installed cyrnogenmod 11 on it and 4g works no problem.

This or Xperia M2 or Desire 610 or HTC one mini or s3?
What do you intend to use your phone for?

Internet browsing, youtube videos, games, and the occasional picture. Most important thing is it has to last 3/4 years or so (it's for a gift to someone who rarely upgrades anything) without slowly to an unusable level.

If they don't mind having an outdated phone, the S3 looks like a great phone for what they want. The 1.4GHz quad core processor and 1GB of RAM should be able to handle games/videos fairly well, and with 1GB of RAM, it should be able to have quite a few apps open at the same time without much of a slow down. The camera is also good (8MP), so this seems to suit their needs. The model also has at least 16GB of storage available (there are 32GB and 64GB versions too, and all 3 models also have an SD card slot to expand storage further), so it's an excellent choice for someone who wants to download lots of apps/games.

My only concern with this phone would be the Android version. Because the phone is outdated, the S3 will no longer receive updates to the Android operating system. This isn't too much of an issue right now, but in a couple of years time (or sooner), less apps available will support this version of Android. Therefore, it won't be possible to play some of the newer releases in the future. In Android's defence though, most of the popular apps do try and support most/all versions of the OS, and because 4.3 Jelly Bean (the android version on the S3) is a popular version, I don't think it will be unsupported for a long time yet.

If you do decide that that will be an issue, then all of the 3 phones you've suggested would be fine. I would personally go with the G2 Mini, because it has a decent amount of storage (8GB) and this can be expanded using an SD card. It has the latest android version (4.4 KitKat) out of the box, and the battery is removable. Having a removable battery might not seem that amazing, but if the person plans to keep the phone for a few years, this is important. After a while, the battery may start to perform badly, so instead of having to buy a new phone, you can buy a battery offline instead. They usually cost no more than around £15, and as long as you make sure it's the official one, it'll work fine.

Sorry that this was such a long answer, I hope this has helped :)

I have read in some forums that the EU version of phone is not covered in UK warranty. You will have to send it to the LG in EU country its shipped from if any repairs are needed.

http://www.expansys.com/ft.aspx?k=321398
The seller is responsible for that according to EU law. But yes, it will be inconvenient but you'd hope that your phone can survive 2 years or so without being repaired.

Trancybowler, at what stage of the booting did the branding show up?
Can't remember but it had the Vodafone logo in an animation when switching on and off.
Thanks Rooster I will do that. I just had conflicting info.
Stop worrying guys, if your phone comes DIRECTLY from Amazon... And your rom says "EUR" then you have a pukka UK spec phone.
If in any doubt, goto LG uk and start a chat, then they will walk you through the verification. But I doubt you'll need to.
I have chatted with Amazon, they have checked and say the phone is brand new uk stock. The supplier does not seal the boxes??

I'm coming from a galaxy s2 with a hardware home buttom so used to knowing where to press without really having to look. Had the phone 2 weeks now and it's gone from 17 times writing one message to maybe.once or twice a day. Still doing the full stop thing a lot e.g. last.sentence.

Switch to a swipe keyboard? Google keyboard is free.

Why didnt i think of this before, on the google keyboard, the spacebar is huge again. Thanks

No problems, I have just gone for an LG G2 too, and will be sure to use a swipe keyboard too.
I have a g2 and I won't be upgrading to any other phone as its amazing.the screen is brilliant the phone is compact considering the screen size.the camera is excellent on auto but the best part is the battery it lasts all day with heavy use the only phone ive had that can manage that.and its actually snappier than the g3

Its not a great phone by any means, but this is just about the right price point for it. Like EVERYONE else I would plump for the full fat G2 for a wee scoop of pennies more, but if you specifically want this phone this is a very sensible price.

considering the overall spec and LG's fairly average standing in the phone market I think over £200 for this is expensive. The screen is not even close to 720p, and the processor is exactly the same as in the Moto G but with LG's added bloat. Another big annoyance is that there is no brightness sensor in this phone, so if you go into bright sun you have to manually adjust the brightness if it isnt already at full brightness. The only advantage this has over the Moto (and other cheaper options) is that it will have a fairly decent camera. If you're after a smaller phone running Android and camera IS important though I'd splash a bit more out and get an Xperia Z1 Compact as the camera on this G2 Mini certainly won't blow your socks off enough to make up for the low screen res and lack of auto brightness.

Do any of these things have a genuinely useable day in them? I know it's 'old' technology, but have a (non-rooted/ICS) Note 1 with an upgraded Anker battery, needed to walk through London with Google maps, an hour of navigating and the battery is run down to alarming levels. Can you expect anything more on these newer phones? This LG looks great but not if you can't actually do anything on it.

Google maps drains at an alarming rate, if it's sat nav that's causing your problem you should look at alternative apps or using google maps differently (download maps, blank screen between turns, etc).
I have a nexus 5, battery life is adequate for my days use, previously I had an S2 with the larger samsung battery and that wouldn't last a full day. My wife has the G2 and in comparison the battery life is amazing, she easily manages 2 days between charges.
It's all down to how you use the phone, but the G2 is streets ahead of anything else I've at the moment.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Will look at the alternatives.
Just curious, what alternatives? The G2 has one of the best battery life for any smartphone out today...

What is a comparable phone (price and features etc.) but with an SD card?

There isn't really... maybe the Moto X or Sony Z1 but the G2 is better... the S5 would be on par but then that's £500..... Just get the 32gb G2

Thanks for the reply but it just goes to show what a rip off phones are. If they take away future proofing a phone they can offer it at a decent price, but expandable memory is an extra £200. Not to mention they charge an extra £50 or so for an extra 16gb of internal memory....

Unfortunately "fulfilled" does not mean this is necessarily an UK phone; I would check with the marketplace seller. I've no problem with imports but I'd like to know what risk I'm taking when buying something - and thus whether discount is worth it.

If you're importing a phone anyway - then you can get the 32GB for a bit more (if goods in UK). Not sure IMHO whether Amazon marketplace is lower risk than eBay for example.
Amazon gives you one year no fuss returns for the ones fulfilled by them. In my experience their returns is one of the best if not the best.

This for 299 or the new Sony Z2 for £550 :( decisions decisions...
I'm wondering the same thing. I can't decide whether to wait for the Z2 to come down in price or just go for this. Also considering the 32gb model from eBay for an extra 25 quid, as apparently it comes with a full 12 month warranty. Does anyone know how easy it is to unlock the UK 4G/root this phone? Cheers!

Rooting won't be too difficult I used cyangenmod for my hp touchpad works an absolute dream its running on 4.3.2 And I have a feeling three may offer it at the best discounted rate of around £470 to compete with the HTC m8 - plus its delayed so start saving lol

3 quid for the stick and 4 quid for the deliver?! How can that be a hot deal?

Y U NO READ MY REPLIES?

For the third time, it was the DEAL OF THE DAY on Tuesday, which was the only time it had free delivery. It's expired now, but sadly people would rather vote cold in frustration than read my previous replies and click expire (like I've done).

Looks like it's back to £42.99/month now. Time to expire.
It's back - choice of 32.99 or 37.99 for same tariff!

Ignore me!

It must have been a premonition - it is back!

they're not going to honour it.
Unbelievable. As if it made any difference to them. Sorry to hear that you had to cancel your order but I'd do the same if I was treated like that.

No problem. It was a good deal, for anyone who took it out before the 26th. Still not a bad deal now, but after being assured that roaming in Australia, New Zealand, and USA was included, that was what swung the deal in their favour for me.
The only deal I've posted on here this year was for some cheap flights to Australia and New Zealand in December. I'm not giving EE all the money we saved by paying them for roaming! 8)

if only this phone had a micro-sd slot... :(

anyone who's got one of these - how do you cope with such a limited amount of storage space? genuinely curious, because my 32gb card is almost full *and* i have 16gb storage with the xperia t is use at the moment, so i really struggle to see how only having 16gb with no external storage capability can possibly work. how do you guys do it?

I agree with you there it's a shame since they do make one. The Korean home market version has micro sd.

Also the Japanese version is 32GB, with Micro SD and is waterproof

WHY did you have to show me that? I really want that now. X)

Could someone confirm if this comes with a case as well?

It doesn't.

Don't know if it comes with a case but I highly recommend Nillkin Fresh PU Flip Case for it
it's around £5 on eBay shipped from China or £7.45 from a UK seller (171245951405).

I've got Yellow and my girlfriend has the red one.
The back of the case if slightly thicker than the LG QuickWindow but it's nicely contoured so not too noticeable.
It has the magnet in the right place for the QuickWindow feature to work properly. It also has a magnet on the right side front that keeps the flip closed which is better than the LG offering in the event of the phone falling as the screen will be covered.

Bit the bullet and ordered before they go os again...

Anyone worried about 16 gig not being enough storage, I've just ordered one of these; http://www.mymemory.co.uk/OTG-Micro-USB/SanDisk/SanDisk-64GB-Ultra-Dual-OTG-Micro-USB-Flash-Drive

An extra 64 gig should be enough for anyone!

The unlocked version is finally out. A bit expansive but they say here that it is around $700 on amazon http://www.spotga.com/2014/06/lg-g3-32gb-factory-unlocked.html
I read that O2 were to have exclusivity on the 32GB version, but for some reason it never happened...
I'm baffled why LG never released the 32GB over here.

This won't be LTE will it? Not in the UK at least.

It's an easy software fix for LTE (to get 4g):

Type in dialer:
3845#*802#,then the secret menu will come up...Then:

1. Go to LTE-Only
2. Modem Settings
3. RAT Selection
4. Select GSM / WCDMA / LTE auto
