Not voted but I'm done with 4k for the time being. Its so expensive, outside of life of pi every other film I have seen has been underwhelming. Not to mention the HDCP 2.2 that stops me from using my sound bar via hdmi.

My local currys had a LG OLED 55" in Clearance, I was keen to have it but it was the display model. Really put me off thinking it's been on for 8 hours a day or more just running the same demo.
Have the 55" version, this TV is fantastic.

If you can get this at a price even close to this then you're a winner in life!!
at full brightness you wouldn't see the dead pixel.

Probably store specific, or at least those who have a spare ex-display same model which will be rare!
Pretty sure this was spare ex-display as it wasn't there 2 days ago. They had another one out for £649 - exact same model

This was in Swansea, fforestfach. They had another one there which was £649 but they weren't sure of the price difference. Might be worth checking other stores in the area if you're close by

Xiaomi or Xiaoyi?

I'm confused.
Elileo
I have bought from AliExpress in the past, several times, and have had nothing but problems every time.

I've made well over 250 orders and spent thousands and am completely satisfied. Out of all those orders I've had maybe 5-10 problem orders (none arrival or not as described) and Aliexpress have refunded me for every single one without fail, everything else came without a problem. You just have to realise it's coming from China so will take a while, and is a market place so use a seller with decent feedback.
If you happen to have an Amex card, pay with that. They are great at protecting buyers. If I ever had a problem, they instantly refund it and dispute it for you. I have always been refunded if there were issues on aliexpress but I usually tend to make only small purchases there as i've been burned by chinese sellers in the past..... they never seem to want to refund, instead they offer you discounts which is a bit pants if the item is totally busted. I had one seller who sent me a digital multimeter which gave false readings, he offered 20% then 30% discounts... but I didn't accept any and called up amex who just refunded it for me.

Smaller colour gamut and lower brightness in HDR, worse speakers and a much more reflective screen. I think this 49" version also drops the 100hz panel.

Thanks for that, would have got a KS7000 if I could find one in stock. I set it up last night and was quite impressed but that was coming from a six year old 1080p set. Anything you'd recommend in the price range.
Who still actually buys physical media these days?
feelthevibe
How's it a downgrade? Curious to know, I didn't think much had changed.

How's it a downgrade? Curious to know, I didn't think much had changed. I plan to stick the player on eBay to offset some of the cost, not sure it's get much use.
It's a downgrade from last year's KS7000 so it should end up cheaper too, but this looks like a decent deal if you're going to be buying Blu-ray UHD discs.

Real world peak brightness is nowhere near 1000cd/m² though.

Would go for Hisense but not at this price(same price everywhere). It's not easy to make a decision about new TV now, as last year discounted models are mostly sold out and new model are on expensive side.
PS. If you are not fussy about refurbished tvs, Panasonic ebay outlet have 58inch DX700 model for £549 or 50inch for £429 :)

Why do I need to be careful ?? it's not a bloody crime to share your experience. As a matter of fact I tried to chase them for an explanation and it would be great if they can reach out and explain why the f*** they tried to con.

you're accusing them of selling counterfeit products, which is likely untrue and can be considered libel.
Your situation was one where they may have unknowingly sold you an item that had already been opened. If they sold you a refurb advertising as new, then that's an issue too and worthy of complaint. But accusing them of fraud through selling counterfeits is a whole different ballgame.
pavel76
but accusing someone of selling fake goods is different story and you might be contacted by PRC, be careful

It says HDR and 4K so surely this is the best ? Again I'm not an expert so any advice is appreciated !

I've spotted a flaw in your reasoning.

Let's analyze this >

You see specs HDR and 4K, your brain says hey buddy it says HDR and 4K and we know these are the latest technologies, you're with me here aren't you bud, of course you agree. Then even though you haven't already disqualified yourself as an expert, you state again that you disqualify yourself as an expert, making your initial reasoning based on acronyms that this is the best completely moot. What we can say from this is absolutely you're nowhere near being an expert and it's good that you acknowledge this, what we can say is that assumption is not akin to being an expert. I'm not sure what advice I could give, I suppose, well actually I have a bridge to sell and bridges are good investments at the moment, so I think you should buy it from me.

A £1 HDMI cable does as good a job as this. Cold
I agree that it's possible to get a £1 HDMI cable to do as good a job, but the cheap HDMI cables are more likely to have cheaper quality parts and more susceptible to break, snap or have issues (e.g. connectors, pins etc).
Yes, you pay more for such a HDMI cable, but generally get a more durable and reliable cable - as the saying goes, 'you get what you pay for.'

Overpriced, and as for the rrp, it is a joke, I paid half that last year for a much better quality active (amped) 15m hdmi cable with extra thick conductors.

The plugs on this cable don't appear to have any strain reliefs, so I would expect it to be prone to wire breakage where the cable enters the plugs if frequently disturbed. And as far as I'm aware betron is not exactly a premium brand, they appear to me to just be yet another Amazon/ebay trader importing generic Chinese made and designed goods with customer branding applied.
jasee
Well in that case this cable must be really worth £949 (for one metre)(It's one of those 'directional' ones) ;) Must be hundreds of times better than the one herehttp://www.futureshop.co.uk/audioquest-diamond-hdmi-cable-1m-p-5283.html#.WXa-rLaQxaQAnd I don't really see why you're on this site anyway because this site is about getting better value for money which simply can't exist if you always 'get what you pay for'
I got that before 4k was invented and it made my tv 4k its an amazing cable everyone should buy one now flirt
EndlessWaves
Version numbers apply to HDMI devices, there's no such thing as an HDMI 1.4a cable.

This is true, although there are 'high speed certified cabling and better constructed cables.

Bit stupid that the hdmi consortium decided to not allow proper branding officially as it does make checking which cables have been certified to higher spec or say hdmi 2.0 a little trickier...

Hi - I had a 7800 picked up earlier this year - and it was superior to the S Hub 3's wireless range and speed - through the 7800 I was getting upto 260 meg dload upstairs with router placed a floor below - awesome.

However I thought I'd give this a go - even though I know the 7800 is newer - and blow me down - a full 300 meg dload wirelessly upstairs !! - wired into pc downstairs gives me 320 meg dload on a 300 meg vm connection.

Also with this r8000 I no longer need a wifi extender near the front door for my ring doorbell - as it picks up the 2.4ghz a LOT easier from this than the 7800.

So for me this is a step up from the 7800.

Have you updated firmware? Added roughly 50% extra range over the supplied version on ours, and we were experiencing occasional dropouts which it also fixed.

I just did it quickly by scanning via the router interface. Made a huge difference.

Definitely up to date, version 1.0.2.28, like I said, surprised it's range doesn't beat the Superhub 2

Have you updated firmware? Added roughly 50% extra range over the supplied version on ours, and we were experiencing occasional dropouts which it also fixed.

No doubt there are many DJI Phantom 4 owners who have spent £1500+ on their drone and hate this so are downvoting it.
Been looking at reviews - every reviewer putting it through its paces is blown away by the specs for the price - apart from not being 4K 60FPS (Its 30FPS) and sometimes having an issue with the compass, this drone is at least 90% as good as a Phantom 4. The gimbal is absolutely fantastic like on the phantom. There are some other things which could be improved like flying around a point of interest but these will be ironed out eventually. The only thing which stops me from getting one is thinking customs will nab it and charge admin fees etc..
Exactly unpredictable hotukd. Very good price for 4k drone with very good review. Though initial batch had issue but those are new 4k version with many different hardware compare to hd version.

Sony rubbish, I've had 2 including a 4K and don't compare to my new LG AND SAMSUNGS!! Rubbish clonky machines! Don't waste ur money
I only paid £550 for my 4K Sony 49" TV and it's miles ahead of my dad's £1200 55" Samsung 4K TV in picture quality, sound, ease of use and app updates/optimisation but that's just 2 models specifically. After using the Samsung I would say don't waste your money on them.
Hello which Sony model do you have and where did you get it Thanks
I would love one of these if i had the cash, last years models looked best to me even the 8bit + frc
so would imagine 4k will look amazing on this.
kevgj1
Damn if you gonna pay this much for a 49" then should just wait a little more for an OLED. I manged to get an OLED55B6V from Amazon Warehouse for around £1250 few months back.

You bought a TV at a price discount achieved over a year after launch and 49" OLEDs won't launch for a minimum of 9 months if LG get the factory running for the 2018 range.

So your 'wait a little more' is an minimum of two years, and could quite easily be four or five.

chevychase
According to Rtings this is currently the best 49" tv available.

Rtings only cover the North American market, so they don't review Panasonic or Philips, and their Hisense reviews are limited.

The XE90 will come out on top for a lot of people though. The Panasonic EX750 looks like a strong contender for normal TV use, with a better Smart TV system, but doesn't compare for HDR.
The best way is to compare in shop! It's not how it will be at home but at least you can see like for like
HDR,4K,OLED quantum dot with foot massager are they making those yet?

I'm looking for a good quality TV with 4k & HDR for a PS4 Pro. Around 48-50", £5-600. Would this fit the bill or is there better out there?
I think I read somewhere that some Samsungs don't have headphone sockets, is this true? Really need the headphones

I'd get something second hand from last years lineup. Second hand Sony perhaps. Or the KS7000 if you can find one :{
Can't decide if to get a 4k tv or a 1080p projector. One one hand, a 4k TV will have 4 x resolution of 1080p but a projector can produce larger image. So is it better to choose resolution over large image size a projector can produce. Would any 4k be far superior in picture quality than a 1080p projector like benq w1070, or Epson 5300
Is it right that the MU7000 doesn't have a 10bit display? I thought last year's model did.

Trying to decide between that, the LG J800, Panasonic DX802 and Sony XE7073. Have about £1000 to drop, anyone have any recommendations of a decent performing HDR set?
secretjedi
Can I get an education here. it says 4k, but people are saying its not good. So a 4k TV has different picture quality. There isn't a standard 4k tv? I just assumed I would watch say BT sports and get a better picture than my standard HD TV?

TV being 4k doesn't equate directly to it's quality, much like a camera with a trillion megapixels doesn't make it a good camera necessarily.

You don't really need to be technically minded, just read plenty of reviews for any TV you might be considering, and if you're still not sure then ask people on here for opinions.

If you don't really care and just want to tell people you have a 4K TV, then buy this

horrible TV its a proper budget 4k screen and is utterly pointless
Indeed...
No idea why people cheap out on an 8bit 4k TV
If you want to watch 4k content, either go for a decent 4k set, or wait for the price to drop if you can't afford it, kidding yourself buying this thinking you're getting 4k in all it's glory.
otherwise, a decent 1080p will give a better picture than a budget 4k set like this.

A lot of people are turned off / overloaded by the tech specs, and rightly or wrongly, just plump for what they think is ostensibly a decent piece of kit.

So I'm reminded I've got to bore the sh1t out of myself researching new TV tech, as am dipping my toe into the market for a new one.

Will likely wait until Jan next year when prices will, potentially, have dropped further

i'd like to see some proper reviews of this in the future - particularly in comparison to the 43m3000 - this could end up being quite a good tv - but just scouring the internet at this early stage - not many people seem to have one

as a 43m3000 owner i'm curious of the difference in hdr and the backlighting technology of it

main detractor of 43m3000 is occasional discrepancies in the backlight when there's movement - otherwise it's been pretty good for the money (though i did pay £240 for my tv so even with it's minor flaws it's been a good buy)

43m3000 was edge lit and this is direct lit - so i'm wondering if that will make a difference - will have to keep an eye out for this one in shops to see what the picture is like

---------- just seen a couple of reviews published at richersounds - both 5 stars on all fronts - they are the only ones i can find

Worst TV I ever bought, literally caught fire after owning it for 5 months. Something went wrong with ambilight and I saw burn marks around the edge of screen and on the frame of TV itself, potentially overheated LED light which is in the back of the TV with burn mark at the opposite of the LED .Philips stated engineers had a look at the pictures I emailed to them and they came to conclusion that it is mechanical fault and they put blame on us!! That was all done over the picture rather than actually sending someone to collect TV and do proper investigation to make sure this model is actually safe. They invalidated warranty, refused refund and we were £500 out of pocket. Never ever will buy anything from Philips and I strongly discourage anyone to support them.
This doesn't ring true them refusing to come out why not take it back to shop or contact seller?
I did take it back that's what I said, was referred to Philips for warranty issue which they declined, I sent them pictures and even video and explenation, but they voided warranty. In my opinionthis model should be recalled for safety issues, but that would cost philips millions in revenue, i am simply describing my terrible experience and frustration I had to deal with. I was so angry I even removed any philips product in my house such as light bulbs etc and threw it away, will never spend a penny on philips product.
You're either lying or stupid. If it was a couple of weeks over 120 days then that falls within the SOGA 6 months and argos shouldve replaced or refunded as it was obviously faulty. You shouldve gone to trading standards if they referred you to phillips.
Didn't your mother teach you be polite? if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it! You are stupid! I did what I did, explained myself clearly so if you don't understand it go back to primary school. They don't give you refund if they believe that you damaged item intentionally which is what they concluded after inspection from video and pictures received. Either way I don't give a damn anymore , it cost me money, but I learnt from this experience and spread the word around to friends and family. I am replying to this thread only to help others consider different TV , because I don't think this one is safe and wouldn't wish anyone to go through the hassle I did. You go ahead and buy 10 of those if you love it so much and I wish you worst of luck so you can go to courts and fight it if you so sure you will "prove" that you didn't damage it.Ignoring your comments now as I am only trying be helpful here and not bickering with individuals like you
Madness. If you are buying a Tv to be future proof as i'm sure most are thinking they are. Why on earth go for an upscaling tv that only has 60 Hz refresh rate. No wonder a lot are having picture freeze /flickering problems. Just wait until you come across true 4K broadcast. If tv's are 'cheap' there's a reason for it.

Managed to get the last one at my local Argos on Saturday thanks to this post.Happy with it for the money. Picture quality is good (I updated the firmware and applied the settings from the calibration video) and the Ambilight is a nice feature.Only thing I don't like about it is the backlight bleed, but it's only really noticeable when watching a film with the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

you could try the paper fix - where you insert a slip of folded paper between screen and bezel surround

Your opinion and choice. I place a high value on reliability and have seen too many faulty vestel TVs to consider them reliable. Panasonic thought the same having taken a bashing following their use of Vestel rebadged TVs. I don't have proof to show you though if you Google vestel reliability you'll likely find why I won't buy. The warranty removes most of the concern in this case though I suspect it will be needed.
Fair enough, but reliability with any brand can be hit and miss - when I worked at Currys most of the TV returns we had were Samsung, so you have to question how much extra you're willing to pay for the perceived reliability of a brand.

As usual, just a reminder that Toshiba doesn't make it's own TVs (like every other brand apart from LG, Sony and Samsung). This is a Turkish Vestel TV. Go for a Hisense instead.
Doesn't really matter who makes it, I have the 43 Inch version also made by Vestel and it's as good as my Sony, if not slightly better and that was twice the price.

I'm surprised that there's so much interest. Bridge photography must be a lot more popular than I imagined.

Well, the optical zoom is very good. And it's made by a very well know lens maker Leica. The Sony zoom is a T* made by Carl Zeiss. You can't get much better than those. The sensor is only 1" but 20 Mp. Ok, zoom lenses can't be as good as prime lenses. But who can afford a range of prime lenses nowadays? And it's all in a reatively compact body

It's been this price or less for over a year. I bought one from John Lewis last year. The quality is awesome, no doubt about it. The Video quality is good but there's a real flaw - when you pan, there is judder/STUTTER when videoing moving objects. I noticed this on mine when I bought it and thought I was imagining it. I Then Googled it and saw lots of comments about it. Sadly it went back. The FZ2000 has been out for a while now, I'm surprised this hasn't dropped in price even more.Just checked and the price is £30 more than last year and that included the cash back. Camera must be popular hence the price hike.

Interesting, was this only at 4K? (I'm not actually intersted personally in 4K)

You could get a heck of a good dslr with decent lenses for that price though, and I think bridge cameras are great.

This camera has won dozens of awards and doesn't require half a dozen additional lenses.
No longer available.
Does this come with any of the accessories shown, it shows a fancy wind shielded external microphone, what appears to be a hot shoe mounted flash?
Brilliant carl zeiss lens!. But which has a true focal length of 8.8-220.
Not sure I would trust Amazon with a refurbished, the lens being such a critical part 'limited to no signs of use' Of course you could send it back, but..
For the amount of kit you are getting here, incorporating the discount, this is a super hot deal (providing it is A standard).

Didn't come on here to buy a camera. I now have one on its way. Damn you HUKD.

Nearly £900 for a refurbished LCD when you can have a brand new OLED for only £500 more and you get an extra 4 years warranty. I seriously don't get it.

Not saying this is a good deal but lol "only" £500 which is more than 50% cost of the original TV, not to mention the OLED TV you referring to is out of stock everywhere and 2017 model is triple that price. lastly its not like OLED is the best TV techs ever, it still have many disadvantage compare to LCD, its hard to justify the premium over LCD now

Seriously does any run of the mill pc owners pay this much for a monitor. Idk if it worth it but wow these inflated prices are ridiculous to me personally. It's almost like the the pc owners themselves are creating these rip off prices by acting all superior and knowledgeable and being brainwashed into having the best.
No, because its not a run of the mill monitor.......
... the Amazon reviews don't inspire total confidence though, tbf.
The Benq is a true 10-bit IPS panel, I got the impression it uses the same AOO panel as the Asus.
You could say that every manufacturer sends a pre calibrated sample to TH but from the results it sounds as good as the Asus... with the bonus of being a 2017 model and not from the BT shop.

Sounds better than the Asus tbh from the Tom's Hardware review... Would have preferred an Amazon warranty than a BT Shop one too.
VA screen, no pre-calibration. Looking at Amazon reviews it seems there's some serious banding issues.
I'd be dubious that Benq didn't send TH a golden sample (calibrated) and that you'd get something very different. No guarantee of colour accuracy at all.

Personally I would avoid Sharp TVs; they're low quality and its worth spending a bit more to get something allot better.
Good value but dire user interface

Which Hisense 49" have true 4k at this price?

i got my 49M3000 for £339 from AO when they had a £30 off code - happens quite frequently.

People, please don't ask about true 4K at this budget. :D You would never get a true 10bit 4K TV at this price. It will be 8bit but will be absolutely fine for more than 90% of us anyway at this price :D
Hisense do 'real 4K' around this price.
Also, HDR and 4K are totally separate so please don't say that 4K is not possible because 10bit isn't really available at this price.

Are there any 4K ones that actually take images in a frame rate that can properly convey motion? as in more than 15FPS? And even 30FPS would be slow for an action cam.

Ive got the Yi 4K Plus and its 60fps 4K, amazing action cam but at a price (£280 +)
It's not a real 4k camera. Why pay for fake 4k?
don't bother, I bought something similar very disappointing,

I've got something similar. Its about as 4k as my commodore 64 but decent enough for the price
I could not have worded it better. Although I never had a c64 but a potato will suffice

Yes but by the time you add in the cost of a flux capacitor it works out the same ;)
or you can try the free waiting method, works well cheeky
Better check with Mystic Meg then because there's no guarantees it it will be that cheap again.
It will - in Black friday sale - but that is 4 months away...

Again, speculation.

I thought the Fire Stick would have had a better discount on Prime Day but the Echo got a massive discount.

Before anyone gets too excited, Toshiba don't make their own TVs anymore and are all re-branded turkish Vestel's. Same as all of the other well known brands apart from Samsung, LG and Sony.
Just pick up any unbranded TV and it will be literally identical.
Didnt realise that! Thanks
Take it this would be a better deal from richer sounds?

https://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/lg/49-inch-smart-4k-hdr/lg-49uh610v

This man knows. Loads of vestel tv's knocking about these days.
I was going to spend about a grand on a 65 inch Samsung but now I am just going to wait for Costco or similar store offering a 5 year guarantee to do one for around 600, not bothered about the 10 bit hdr stuff now as there is always going to be something new on tv's. Just wish there wasn't such a big jump in price from 55 inch to 65 inch.

A New Technology: 4K TVs

All the major TV manufacturers sell 4K TVs and you will find the clarity of image and detail gives you the type of audio visual experience at home that you only ever dreamed about. The 4K screen resolution is 3,840 x 2,160 pixels which gives a total of 8 million pixels. That's four times the pixels provided by a Full HD television set. This is still an emerging technology and some users feel the image and viewing quality provided by a top of the range 1080 pixel TV is better than they received from a new 4K set, this could be due to purchasing an entry level model with poor image processor capabilities. When you buy 4K TV with powerful processing capabilities you will enjoy 4K picture quality at all times. It's also essential to consider the benefits of buying a 4K TV with HDR capabilities.

4k tv next level entertainment

Ultra HD Resolution

4K resolution TVs are digital televisions providing viewers with horizontal resolution of 4,000 pixels, they are also known as UHD or Ultra HD TVs. The picture quality is near cinematic, hardly surprising given that this technology is used for cinematography. These televisions give approximately four times the image quality of standard 1080 pixel HD TVs. The first 4K TVs were launched in 2014/2015, they generally had larger screens, produced by manufacturers such as Sony and Samsung, with comparably high price tags of £20,000 upwards. This is now starting to become mainstream technology and is now available on smaller TV screens at much cheaper prices. 4K technology screened in cinemas provides 4096 x 2160 resolution, while the tech provided to consumers is just slightly lower at 3840 x 2160.

About 4K TVs

Once you decide to opt for a 4K TV you'll need to spend time researching the different available models. Most 4K TVs are on the large side, with 40-inch screens or above. A screen of this size is so viewers can appreciate the finer image and detail fully, watching shows on 4K TVs with a smaller screen size would not give you the full advantages of this new technology. Sports fans will be particularly impressed by these televisions and the high quality and smooth and sleek image, and motion displayed. BT Sport has already introduced a 4K sport channel so sports fans get the crisp image and viewer experience they desire. Gamers who own an Xbox One S, a PlayStation 4 Pro, or want to connect their PC to the TV can take advantage of a 4K TV model as well.

4k tv curved screen
Flat Panel TV or Curved Screen?

You can opt for a flat panel or curved screen 4K TV, this will likely depend on manufacturer and model you choose. Panasonic, LG and offer flat screen models, while both companies other both flat and curved screen 4K TVs, such as Samsung and LG. Manufacturers are pushing for more consumers to buy curved screens as they say it is a far better viewing experience. This is the immersion technology argument, whereby viewers watching a slightly curved TV screen feel more involved as the images wrap around peripheral vision. It is true to say that watching curved screen does give this feeling, allowing you to feel as if you almost watching in 3D. Some manufacturers, for example Samsung, enhance this by increasing the image depth enhancement. The slightly curved screen also gives viewers the sensation they are watching in wider screen. Other arguments for buying a curved screen TV include better contrast effects and that this type of screen is better suited to the rounded shape of the human eye. Another valid argument for curved screens is that their design looks fantastic in any interior, particularly when they are on stands.

There are several arguments against curved screens, including the fact that increased reflections on the screen mean interior lighting will probably need to be reviewed. Some critics argue that the curved screen actually reduces viewing abilities, and it's true that the best place to benefit from the immersive experience can only be when you're sitting directly opposite the centre of the screen. Not many living areas will allow everybody to sit in this position. It's also been suggested that the real benefits of screens of this nature can only be experienced with TVs offering screens of 70 inches or more. From an interior design aesthetic, curved screens really don't hang on the wall as well as flat screens and the higher price tag for curved screen TVs may be hard for many people to justify.

4K TVs Have HDR

High Dynamic Range (HDR) refers to the detail and colour quality available on these televisions. HDR is commonly used terminology within digital camera use, and photographers using HDR mode find that it provides greater brightness and 4k tv flat panelultimately, more luminous images. The contrasts between light and shade are much more pronounced in HDR mode. This mode allows you to look into dusky or shadowy depths on the screen and actually pick out some of the shapes and forms within the darkness, while the added brightness gives far more life and energy. From the buyer's viewpoint, a TV that is HDR enabled gives a far more lifelike image than has been possible to date. Most 4K TVs are also HDR, the benefits of HDR being that smaller screen sizes also provide great viewing, which is not necessarily the case with 4K TVs.

Many filmmakers and TV producers feel that the HDR technology is more valuable than that of 4K. Although 4K gives added pixels, adding dynamic range and contrast to screenings gives people far better viewing experience. The biggest providers of streaming content, Amazon and Netflix, both supply content in HDR. You need a compatible Smart TV to stream HDR from Amazon or Netflix and the available content is still somewhat limited, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Daredevil were all filmed using HDR technology for example. HDR technology is also available at selected Dolby Cinemas which are designed to compete with IMAX.

The drawbacks of HDR are that the technology requires higher levels of storage or bandwidth for streaming, and also where HDR is used indiscriminately the viewer experience can be quite awful as images can look tasteless and tacky.

It does seem that manufacturers are committed to providing the new 4K and HDR technologies in tandem, so you will have a variety of options on content and entertainments available to you. Hisense is one of the manufacturers providing budget 4K TVs with HDR compatibility.

LED

Most 4K TVs feature LED (light emitting diodes) screens which are very thin and can be hung or placed easily anywhere around the home. The LED family of TV panels are part of the LCD group, but LED features better backlighting.  This is because the LEDs will backlight the screen and cut the need for fluorescent backlight systems that are installed in conventional LCD televisions. LED TVs use less energy, so it's an eco-conscious buying decision, but the development of the new OLED TVs may well reduce their market value. If you're considering buying a 4K TV, choosing an LED or OLED screen should be one of the most important factors to influence your decision.

OLED

Organic light emitting diodes (OLED) screens have even better colour, vibrancy and quality, however they are the most expensive 4K TVs currently on the market. OLED technology TVs don't require backlighting as every pixel on screen is a small LED (light emitting diode) in itself. These TVs feature even thinner screens, around 4mm, with even thinner ones currently in prototype. Further advances in OLED technologies may see these screens become flexible or transparent. The OLED technology is also available in 1080 pixel televisions which are hugely popular and will support 4K resolution. Curved, flat, and even bendable televisions are available using this technology and LG is the popular provider.

LG OLED TV

Smart TV, Connections, and Gaming Requirements

Most modern televisions on the market now are Smart, meaning your TV is internet enabled. Smart TVs have the added benefit of a variety of preloaded apps, such as Netflix streaming. Your Smart TV will also allow you to browse the Internet from the comfort of your living area. Each 4K TV manufacturer has different custom layouts, setup possibilities, and controls for these televisions, so make sure to check out what would be easiest for your chosen TV prior to making any purchase.

If you opt for a 4K TV which is not Smart you can still access Smart services by adding streaming boxes such as Roku or Apple TV, while a YouView set top box will give you Freeview and access to Internet TV. Furthermore, connecting your computer to the TV allows you to use the larger screen as a computer monitor. You'll need a HDMI cable or DisplayPort cable to connect your 4K TV to the Internet and take full advantage of all the available Smart content, play games, and access services. Older 4K TVs will use HDMI 1.4 connections, giving you gaming speeds of 30 frames per second which is slower than recommended. Newer 4K TV models require HDMI 2.0, giving 60 frames per second which is the speed most games are designed to run. TVs with DisplayPort inputs are still fairly rare, so being able to game at optimum levels using a 4K TV is still a way off.

If you intend to use your TV for gaming the input lag test results are critical to your overall gaming experience and these results refer to the time taken by the TV to process its response to controllers. As TVs become even more complex and incorporate more features, the time required to perform video processing tends to increase. If you need to buy a 4K TV for gaming you'll want to find one with the best lag test results. At present the faster 1080pixel TVs provide better results in testing for input lag.

Many users feel the advantages of sitting close to 4K TVs when gaming can outweigh other disadvantages as it's like using VR headsets. The main drawback is that it's impossible to view the complete screen at once when sitting up close. This can be a real negative when playing games with critical information bars in corners, like health bars, equipment counters or maps.

4 times resolution of full hdIs it 3D Compatible?

Toshiba is one manufacturer providing a 4K TV with passive 3D capability, what this means in layman's terms is that you'll only need the inexpensive 3D glasses to view films in near cinema quality. Most TVs need viewers to wear the expensive active 3D capability glasses to obtain the best viewing experience on television. As already discussed above, many viewers find the immersive-type viewing offered by larger screens, coupled with the enhanced visuals, to be as effective as 3D TV.

Available Content

There is a large range of content available for 4K TVs, Hollywood films, TV programmes and shows have been filmed using 4K technology for a number of years. Streaming it to devices and downloading is already possible from Netflix and Amazon, but you will require broadband of 15Mpbs or above. You may find some 4K TVs don't yet support broadband of 15Mpbs and above. YouTube has a considerable amount of 4K content and dedicated 4K channels. A number of 4K TV channels are in the pipeline alongside BT Sport Ultra HD which was the first 4K sports channel in Europe. Sky Q box is 4K and allows the viewer to watch and record up to four channels simultaneously. The major problem with this technology in the UK is that many providers still don't give the full HD 1080pixel definitions, therefore, the jump to 4K is a big one. Virgin and Freeview transmit at the reduced 1080i format at present.

4K Blu-ray Players

Available 4K Blu-ray players offer greater storage capacity and more disks are coming to the market as the popularity of 4K TVs increases. 4K disks for Blu-ray are cheaper, as the films were shot using this technology and do not need to be converted.

4K Ultra HD Camcorders

Another useful device to increase enjoyment of any 4K TV is the 4K Ultra HD Camcorder, which allows you to capture films in the greatest detail and with perfect colour and imagery. Professionals have been using 4K devices for a while now and buying your own 4K camcorder gives enables to shoot professional-quality films and photos at any time which you can later watch on your 4K TV device.

Compatible Devices

4K TVs are backwards compatible, so existing Blu-ray players, cable devices and DVD players can be used with these TVs and you will discover the viewing experiences are enhanced. To really make the most of your new TV it's recommended to opt for the latest devices, Blu-ray players, camcorders and associated disks.

Downside of 4K TVs

4k hd tv sony

Expense is the major downside of 4K TVs at this moment, they are becoming more affordable but you should consider all features carefully prior to making a purchase. The development of HD TV took around ten years to become mainstream, however, it's unlikely 4K TV will take so long to become established. One major drawback of 4K TVs is they use up to 30% more power than typical high definition TVs. This could amount to a considerable surge in utility prices over the long term and is an important consideration for any consumer with energy efficiency and environment concerns. It's important to make a number of checks and look at reviews before buying any 4K TV because the available quality of so many top of the range 1080 pixel TVs is higher than ever before for modern consumers. The TV market is fast paced and 4K TVs are still very much in their infancy, but increasingly available and becoming more affordable since 2015.

Best Time of Year to Buy 4K TVs

The marketplace for 4K TVs is developing at this moment, with more models released constantly and falling prices. When newer models are released to the market, discounts are highly likely on older versions. You need to weigh up the pros and cons of buying a new device which will likely have better streaming and content compression features against the purchase of a substantially cheaper model that is already outdated in many ways. First generation 4K TVs from Philips and Samsung are already in need of replacement tuner upgrades, while other providers need to make firmware fixes to maintain the colour quality of devices and keep them at standards offered by the newer TVs. Trials are already being conducted on 8K TVs, which is likely to be the next popular device launched to the market over coming decades.
