Sound quality of my sharp 32 is very poor. I would avoid this and spend a bit more.
Does it claim to have Harman Kardon sound technology like this model? One review says sound is great, another says soundbar would be needed.

4k on a 43" screen offers no real resolution benefit compared to 1080 unless used as a monitor or laptov, the latter being kinda impractical. That said, seems reasonable price for a UMC.
There is a 49" for £299 after the code - arguably a better deal?
Certainly beneficial if watching 4k from reasonable viewing distance.

I had to return Samsung UE55KS7000 due to the black frame becoming lose, poor build quality
but wonder if John Lewis or Richer Sounds will price match Amazon
Why cold....heat from me added.

This or the £1200 curved samsung?

This 100%. Bought the curved Samsung during Black Friday and returned it the next day. Build quality on the Samsung is absolutely terrible, the panel is GLUED to the frame and there's plenty of people that have had an issue of it coming apart.

After I returned I bought this Hisense for £1080 from AO and it's worth every single penny. Image quality is beautiful, 4K HDR via NVIDIA Shield TV looks amazing, and Uncharted 4 in HDR on PS4 was an amazing experience.

6 years maybe not, but if your buying a TV that was originally £3000 I'd expect it last 3-5 years minimum and any reasonable person would expect the same so a court would side with that on a claim
.
If you think these companie will just refund a out of warranty TV if you spout the EU law then you are dreaming .You have to prove the fault was there when you bought it .Do you really want the stress involved or just buy from a company offering a decent warranty.

No. I spoke with them earlier and they won't match as Argos charge £170(odd) for a three year extended warranty.

Next time Currys have an offer I'll go with them as RS confirmed, and checked, the deal over the phone then called me back after the Currys voucher expired to withdraw the offer. Pretty shady.

Well I was not looking for a curved TV but wanted a KS series so went to have a look. I now own one. I think I can live with the curve. Thanks for the deal. Also I was told there are 400 in stock at the moment. The York store also had 2 new 55 KS8000 but they were £1300.

Not sure about curved but this could be the last chance to grab a 55 inch KS series. Thinking about it. Voted hot anyway

It's annoyed me no end that the 2017 replacement series (MUXXXX) is both inferior quality and more expensive.

is the MU the straight replacement? wow the MU range seems inferior in every sense.

I'm still using a Panasonic 1080p plasma, but I'm reluctant to upgrade to a 4k OLED until things settle a little (much as they did once 1080p became established as the norm).
Wait for a TV that can truly display high dynamic range pictures, i.e. one that is capable of extremely high brightnesses, extremely dark blacks, and has enough bits of processing to be able to display those and everything in between.

Curved TV's are for suckers.
It looks like the retailers are trying to bin them all.
Seems as though this TV is available in FLAT at £899.00 now, then for me this makes this TV worth at least £100 less.
I don't have a curved TV, but aren't they good in some cases?
I'm trying to think why those boffins at Samsung would have gone to the trouble of making a whole raft of curved tvs and never realised they were only good for the bin?
The manfacturer's of technology products need to "Titillate" the market constantly to keep you in the loop as revenue fodder or sheep, if you prefer.
Excellent posting, snipped. Just one thing: 1080i is not better than 720p, for several reasons. You have to limit vertical resolution with interlacing, or you will get flickering on sharp horizontal edges on cathode ray tubes. It is harder to compress interlaced than progressive signals, so for a given bit rate you will have more artifacts (a worse picture). And it causes problems with moving pictures when shown on progressive displays (in practice, everything except cathode ray tubes). Interlacing is a clever 1930s technology to overcome a problem with low frame rates on cathode ray tubes (large area flicker). It has no place in the digital world, but certain commercial interests forced its death to be postponed. A bigger number must be better, right? Marketing again!

£50 cashback only if you choose the 'Buy now pay later' option, and when you look into it, they charge interest on that option. So unless the interest is less than £50 on your purchase, they are not actually giving you the cashback. You can avoid the interest if you pay the full amount within the credit agreement term. Representative 39.9% APR variable.

You don't pay interest on the buy now pay later. If you pay for the item before the end of the term it is interest free.
Offer excludes Apple products, Sale Items, Financial products, delivery and other promotional offers. Ends Sunday 28th May 2017. Click for full T&C's >

might not get £50 off it say it excludes sale item

Hot for a curved tv.Pleased it isn't the bring flat version.Wouldnt go back to a bog standard flat tv.

May suit your needs, but doesn't the curve affect viewing angles? My room is open plan and I want to be able to view the tv if I am in the kitchen/diner area of the room.

No, where did you "hear" this?

There are some low end LG LCD's that have those panels but not OLED.

I think the panel is wrgb but that is for each subpixel group so there are full rgb subpixels for each normal pixel (each with its own added white) so it's all good in regards to claimed resolution. I think the LCDs had wrgb where not all subpixel are the same causing the issue.

55" Oled deals seem to be get in the sub £1400 mark quite regularly now. What are the chances of them falling to around £1000 mark by Black Friday? That's the price point I am going to bite. See me owning one within the next year :p

these are being sold off as they are last year's model and new models have hit stores now. this is it for these sales, new models are 3k again so I cannot see thoes being 1k for black Friday and these sets will be sold out long before.
buy it wait till tis time next year I suspect unless something unexpected happens unfortunately.

I probably won't buy Hisense again when I replace my current TV.
Why?
To be fair my Hisense does play up a little. I have the 49" variant of this model I believe (4K and HDR even though doesn't mention HDR) and sometimes when using my PS4 Pro it gets weirdly framey. Not the game but the TV itself, i.e UI animations will start being visually below whatever frame rate they are suppose to play at, and start to have micro-strutters, hangs.

For the price, it is insane value for money, and whenever I have and issue a quick change of channel or moving the HDMI fixes it. For what you pay it is hard to find better.

will this be a better tv than the 49" curved (ku6670)samsung tv thats getting hot now regardless size?
No, while the picture of this set gets good reviews, the issues lie in the software on the Hi Sense TV's
They seem to be a good buy and they are for a budget option.. you will though find the software on the set slow and even boot-up times can be in the minutes.
The samsung sets are pretty quick software wise, and offer more compatability with things catchup and streaming, Now TV, Prime etc..
Nothing wrong with the software on mine and boot ups literally 10 seconds. Can't fault it actually

I was torn between this and the KS9000. I went with the LED as I think the 1000nits, HDR10 and larger screen (plus with it being cheaper) sealed the deal. If I had a dark cinema room, id definitely had gone for this.
When I buy my next tell in 5yrs I expect OLED screens will have come on leaps and bounds by then making LED obsolete

I'd take OLED all day long, the picture quality is so superior, you need to see it in person to appreciate the difference, the Samsung screens just look too bright, washed out and the viewing angles are awful (VA Panel).

It's all about personal preference, but you cannot future proof in the world of TV's, these TV's (B6/KS9000) in terms of HDR spec will be redundant by 2018. But it's only an issue side by side, on their own, they look great, as long as you are happy with it.

Bought this TV about 9 months ago and have been using it exclusively as a computer/gaming monitor since; here's my take:

As a non-professional gamer you'll be fine so long as you're not looking to play anything too twitchy like CS:GO; can't comment on refresh rate but I don't notice any issue. In terms of input lag, again, anything twitchy is probably a no go but I mainly play League/GTA/Witcher which are perfectly fine!

Text: Text is clear, if you sit close to it (50cm for me) then you will notice a little distortion at the edges and but the biggest gripe will probably be getting used to the sheer size of this beast as a monitor.

4:4:4 I'll have to side with kind of, I did the test with the different texts on the black background (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=4:4:4+test&client=firefox-b-ab&tbm=isch&imgil=ZQWCdzNifGepdM%253A%253Buxv-i4y45P4s1M%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.geeks3d.com%25252F20141203%25252Fhow-to-quickly-check-the-chroma-subsampling-used-with-your-4k-uhd-tv%25252F&source=iu&pf=m&fir=ZQWCdzNifGepdM%253A%252Cuxv-i4y45P4s1M%252C_&usg=__0Ko9HwAeMMxZ3c-lvb5cl1ZR9CY%3D&biw=1368&bih=843&dpr=2&ved=0ahUKEwjrjpfo7YrUAhUsAsAKHenACRIQyjcIRg&ei=2bQmWau-BqyEgAbpgaeQAQ#imgrc=ZQWCdzNifGepdM:) and found no issue with legibility so I assume so but I'm not a professional so can't say definitively.

Overall a great monitor (I use it daily), also think about playing games at a ultrawide resolution if your GPU can't handle 4k 60hz.

Thanks! this is the same price as a 27" ips lg monitor but this has netflix 4k and if I can sit close to it then might be fine for text. i struggle with playing strategy games on my 46" 1080p samsung but sitting close to 23" aoc ips monitor is great. looking for a bigger monitor but might as well go 4k too... though freesync also in monitors... decisions decisions... probably just wait!!!

It's more to do with the 4K bluray player the Xbox One S has.

3 HDMI???? If it had 4 then I would snap it up but once you added your consoles and virgin box you ran out and have none spare. TV's should come with a minimum of 4 these days with the amount of dongles and stuff we use in a modern society

Been waiting long enough now for the ue65ks9500 to drop some more but doesn't seem to be happening . So ordered it from John Lewis .. put price match request in for the currys price ... also took screen shots .. hadcot in my basket on Tuesday with. Other code but it was when price dropped from £1799 to £1299 and gutbsaid good news amour price is now the same but was trying to get it for £1199 then . So hAve proof anyway . So hopefully all goes smooth

Just my luck by Currys decided to perform a random security check on my payment so it was held in suspense for two days. Finally just got an email to confirm mine will be here tomorrow. CANNOT WAIT!
One more thing, if there are enough of us buyers, I think we should create a KS9000 buyers group so we can share our knowledge on calibration, file formats and ways of getting the best out of this TV.

There possibly is a forum group on av forums for this tv . Normally has one for all makes and models of TVs . Quick and easy to register . Great site for all av stuff ....

Thanks for that, same time as me then. Still nothing through, not sure whether to bite the bullet then reclaim the £100 when, hopefully, the price match comes through or wait. Knowing my luck they will be sold out before then if I wait.
You'd better be quick - Currys were already oos for home delivery but you can still buy and reserve if there's one in a branch near you. As soon as that option goes I would expect JL to hike their price back up.

Try calling john lewis and ask them to reserve one for you until price match comes through

Took delivery of mine today, has anyone tried to peel off what I thought might be screen protection only to think the actual screen is being pulled away really quite upset I may have done some damage or just go ahead and pull it off, any knowledge would be appreciated.
There's a plastic cover over some of mine, but there's also a motheye filter on the actual screen (do not remove the filter).

Have had the lg Oled a few days now and have got a flicker on the HD channels? (intermittent) like a camera shutter going off? have tried everything but still there .anyone else had this fault? my Samsung Tv was fine, on all the same connections? I've contacted LG and there going to look into this. (this fault is only with the TV stations on HD)
HD channels from the set itself or from Sky or something?

No Its the Lgs TV tuner, I had the same problem few years back with an LG 850 tv, and sent it back, have called LG and are looking into it, if its not solved the TV will have to go back unfortunately

Most important features in a new TV for me, in order, best first:
OLED > HDR > 3D > CURVE > 4K
I suspect that'll change as more 4K content becomes available.
At 55" from a "normal" viewing distance, it's not really possible to see that much difference between 1080p and 4k. HDR contrast, for sure, but not 4k resolution. I don't think it's worth the money unless you've got a bigger screen.
If HDR worked on a 1080p OLED it would be great value.
That's simply not true. There can be a significant difference when viewing true 4k content on appropriate hardware in comparison to 1080p; at any distance in a house at this size..
Just being honest based on my own experience. Sure, Netflix looks great in 4k - but that's because they want you to pay for the higher priced 4k package. Have you ever compared their 1080p picture to a 1080p blu-ray? The difference is massive and all about bitrate. They limit the bitrate on their non-4k content and it doesn't look as good as it should due to heavy compression. Their 1080p "full HD" isn't much better than 720p dodgy downloads.
If you compare the same movie on 1080p blu-ray to 4k blu-ray, the biggest difference is HDR. I was actually amazed when I got my 55" OLED at how good the 1080p picture was - my high end Panasonic 46" plasma never showed up anything like the same details from the same source. 1080p looks amazingly detailed (from blu-ray, not Netflix), but 4k doesn't look much better at all from sofa distance. If I sit on the coffee table in front of the sofa, sure I can see it, but then I block the TV for everybody else.
You stand in the aisle in a crowded shop about 2 feet from a 4K TV and it looks great but, when you get it home and across the room, it really isn't all that. I doubt I'd tell a significant difference between a 1080p OLED and a 4k OLED from my sofa - until HDR kicks in.
4k is worth every penny, but only for high bitrate and HDR.
good feedback; doubtless the people who have have brought 4k feeds will feel compelled to defend 4k as otherwise it means they paid for a feature that really isn't up to much right now.
And the people without 4k will criticise it. Its swings and roundabouts.
Not neccessairly, some new features are worth it; HDR seems to be well thought of for example.

It was the Sony Bravia KD65S8505 Curved LED 4K Ultra HD from John Lewis. The TV we have now is the Samsung UE65KS8000 65" 4K HDR S-Ultra-HD (Quantum Dot).
The differences are simply amazing. Even when streaming old films that have been re-done in HD never mind on blu-ray (like Matilda on Netflix) and when streaming from Google Play; the picture is simply amazing. The depth and colours is like nothing I've ever seen.
On the Sony they look pixelated, and were ruined by lots of dots everywhere (obviously the technique they use to make an old film into HD) but with the Samsung the images is as sharp, crisp and clear as if they were film in HD yesterday. We haven't even tried anything in 4K yet
I believe the Samsung is now discontinued (it was £1,499 from Sonic Direct - I didn't expect to have to buy another TV so soon after buying the Sony - I simply wanted the same features for the same money as John Lewis did us over a little bit [the Sony was £2,199, they price matched - great - and had a £250 TV Trade in offer, in the end we were a 37" TV down and only got £1,499 refund - so we essentially gave away our old tv) but when we come to upgrade it will be Samsung for us all the way.
hmm... looks like you're comparing a LED with an OLED-esq technology. You should be in fact comparing a Sony KD-65A1 and Samsung QE65Q8CAMTXXU
and for 4K Get a UHD BLURAY player for ~£300 OR get a PS4/XBOX for same price and double benefits :D
These tellys are no where close to the £2199 which you've mentioned for Sony.
P.S.: Where and how did you get a trade-in offer?

The Sony was £2,199 - The Samsung was £1,499 (not to mentioned we got a free Samsung 4K player with it ([UBD-K8500]). There was 12 Months between purchases. I cant believe that the differences in sheer quality reflect the £700 and 12 Months difference. If this is the case now, I suspect it was still the case a year ago, and will continue to be so unless Sony begins to live up to its reputation and catches up, because in my opinion you can get a whole lot more for your money rather than just buying Sony because you believe they're best (as we mistakenly did).

We got a free Samsung 4K player with the new TV (UBD-K8500) which we are currently selling on ebay, as we dont have any 4k blu-rays yet. I just can't bear to spend more money on 4K blu-rays (after being stung with Sony having 3D glasses and 3D blu-rays to now get rid of - and they're not cheap) - the hubby does have a PS4 though which we use for our normal blu-rays

As for comparing the models above, I simply can't in fairness becuase they are at a price point I could not consider paying. My opinion here is based on the £700 price difference and 12 months between purchases as mentioned. I wouldn't feel as strong if the Samsung was the one that was £700 more expensive as I now would expect for the image quality, not the other way around. I know tech moves along quickly, but I firmly do believe that for the comparable price point Sony's do lack and their current success is based on their name alone. I just wanted people to think and consider other brands as I wish we did.

The trade in offer was a promotion John Lewis has running at the time where they gave you £250 off any TV if you trade in any TV.

I have this panel.

Some criticise the OS (Android) as being slow and clunky - I don't agree, I think for a lowish end spec 4K, this is pretty decent. Add to that the fact you can sideload apps onto this and have Movie HD streaming direct from this TV...

Don't get me wrong, the picture took a while to get right, and it isn't perfect - typical LCD tech with clouding in the corners, but it's still impressive for this price bracket.

Meant to mention lol have you tried altering the dynamic control in the picture menu to help with that clouding.

I'm sure at this price point and size it's a perfectly adequate TV. Sony don't help themselves with menu settings etc but you can almost always get a lovely natural sharp picture with great motion and very decent input lag with Sony tvs. I've done alot of research over the last few years owning some high priced sony tvs. Trying to understand the terminology of the settings etc . and Changed alot of batteries in the remotes. :D worth it though. If you gonna own this stuff may as well try and get the best out of it. Started on the beer early today basically topping up from last night in prep for the game tonight. That I'll be watching on a projector incidentally X) So sry for the rant!

I've just recieved this TV today and i'm struggling to hang it on the wall.

Does anyone know the size of the screws required to attach it to a wall mount? I have an existing mount I can use but the screws that are in the back of the tv end up being to short when trying to attach it. I need the size of the thread so that I can search for longer bolts/ screws

Any help would be appreciated.

You still pay 669.99 though, sure if you want to get other things from Very. So it's kinda good bait tactics from them, no reason to overpay for 100 credit you can only spend on their site.

Actually, the credit goes towards your final balance, so you will have £100 less to pay. I did this method when buying my Xbox One S, they credited the money on the first monthly statement and I paid the rest off straight away.

I've got the m6600, I'd be very surprised if it's edge lit as on a black screen I can see some clouding from the array, which I can live with for the superb picture

The M6600 is definitely edge lit LED.

3300 is the low specs one. Wouldnt recommend
Same specs TV, actually the only difference is the flat one is direct lit and this one is edge lit and suffers from light bleed
the m3300 is edge lit. does suffer with some backlight bleed.
Not according to Hisense spcecs http://www.displayspecifications.com/en/comparison/f320d020
I had the M6600 and it went back due to the terrible light bleed it had, a lot of users have also experienced the light bleed with this set which is documented on the avforums thread for this model.
I bought the M3300 as a replacement and it doesn't have any light bleeding issues and I am pretty happy with it.
the link isn't from Hisense though, it's from displayspecifications but no, it is definately not direct lit, i think the US versions might be.
no mention of direct lit on the Hisense UK website.
Do you have any proof to back that up? The reason I ask is because I would be pretty annoyed if it was not direct lit, because I was told directly by a Hisense representative that it was direct lit. I had to go through Hisense first before arranging my return and the person I spoke to explained to me that the light bleed on the M6600 can be due to it's edge lit panel and I would be better off with the M3300 if I wanted to avoid this. Also I have seen it advertised as direct lit in the specs on a few retailers and on the comparison link I posted above.
Seeing as I do not suffer from edge light bleed on my m3300 and I was told by Hisense it was direct lit and it's been advertised as such I am obviously going to continue to believe that unless you can provide anything to convince me otherwise?
I am 99.9% sure the M3000, M3300 & M6600 are edge lit......they definitely aren't FALD/full array, though there is the vague possibility of being the old style direct lit (though they look far too slim for that).

Good deal, that's my next upgrade from Hisense H49M3000, I will probably wait until Black Friday to see if I can get a better deal. I find the 49" screen to be too big for my bedroom as I'm watching it from my bed less than 2 metres away from the TV.
You could be suffering ophthalmic HDR syndrome
Heat, paid more. Like has been said, if you don't want a massive TV then you're limited with your choices. Felt wonderful moving the 55 inch into the bedroom and having a modest TV again in the living room.

The speed of the menus and general interaction is fantastic, joy to use.

oO a lot of £ for 43" TV. Wouldn't you need the TV near you to notice the quality??

Only the extra resolution, other benefits like the higher quality screen, low reflectance coating and HDR support don't depend on viewing distance.

If you want a higher quality medium-sized TV then this is one of the few options out there, the only option if you want some genuine HDR support.

This is one of, if not the best TV's you'll get at this size though. Plus Samsungs new QLED range start from 49" and up so its not like the new range has a direct replacement.

And not all people use TV's from a far distance. I've just bought this screen and plan on mounting it above a monitor. 4K is not the key selling point of it, either... It's a 10-bit panel, quantum dot, proper HDR. I'm replacing Samsungs model from the year before as I want the (much) improved motion rate, colours, contrasts...

Sell the speaker and this would have cost around £600. Not bad as the one I bought was £520 and a refurb.

A New Technology: 4K TVs

All the major TV manufacturers sell 4K TVs and you will find the clarity of image and detail gives you the type of audio visual experience at home that you only ever dreamed about. The 4K screen resolution is 3,840 x 2,160 pixels which gives a total of 8 million pixels. That's four times the pixels provided by a Full HD television set. This is still an emerging technology and some users feel the image and viewing quality provided by a top of the range 1080 pixel TV is better than they received from a new 4K set, this could be due to purchasing an entry level model with poor image processor capabilities. When you buy 4K TV with powerful processing capabilities you will enjoy 4K picture quality at all times. It's also essential to consider the benefits of buying a 4K TV with HDR capabilities.

4k tv next level entertainment

Ultra HD Resolution

4K resolution TVs are digital televisions providing viewers with horizontal resolution of 4,000 pixels, they are also known as UHD or Ultra HD TVs. The picture quality is near cinematic, hardly surprising given that this technology is used for cinematography. These televisions give approximately four times the image quality of standard 1080 pixel HD TVs. The first 4K TVs were launched in 2014/2015, they generally had larger screens, produced by manufacturers such as Sony and Samsung, with comparably high price tags of £20,000 upwards. This is now starting to become mainstream technology and is now available on smaller TV screens at much cheaper prices. 4K technology screened in cinemas provides 4096 x 2160 resolution, while the tech provided to consumers is just slightly lower at 3840 x 2160.

About 4K TVs

Once you decide to opt for a 4K TV you'll need to spend time researching the different available models. Most 4K TVs are on the large side, with 40-inch screens or above. A screen of this size is so viewers can appreciate the finer image and detail fully, watching shows on 4K TVs with a smaller screen size would not give you the full advantages of this new technology. Sports fans will be particularly impressed by these televisions and the high quality and smooth and sleek image, and motion displayed. BT Sport has already introduced a 4K sport channel so sports fans get the crisp image and viewer experience they desire. Gamers who own an Xbox One S, a PlayStation 4 Pro, or want to connect their PC to the TV can take advantage of a 4K TV model as well.

4k tv curved screen
Flat Panel TV or Curved Screen?

You can opt for a flat panel or curved screen 4K TV, this will likely depend on manufacturer and model you choose. Panasonic, LG and offer flat screen models, while both companies other both flat and curved screen 4K TVs, such as Samsung and LG. Manufacturers are pushing for more consumers to buy curved screens as they say it is a far better viewing experience. This is the immersion technology argument, whereby viewers watching a slightly curved TV screen feel more involved as the images wrap around peripheral vision. It is true to say that watching curved screen does give this feeling, allowing you to feel as if you almost watching in 3D. Some manufacturers, for example Samsung, enhance this by increasing the image depth enhancement. The slightly curved screen also gives viewers the sensation they are watching in wider screen. Other arguments for buying a curved screen TV include better contrast effects and that this type of screen is better suited to the rounded shape of the human eye. Another valid argument for curved screens is that their design looks fantastic in any interior, particularly when they are on stands.

There are several arguments against curved screens, including the fact that increased reflections on the screen mean interior lighting will probably need to be reviewed. Some critics argue that the curved screen actually reduces viewing abilities, and it's true that the best place to benefit from the immersive experience can only be when you're sitting directly opposite the centre of the screen. Not many living areas will allow everybody to sit in this position. It's also been suggested that the real benefits of screens of this nature can only be experienced with TVs offering screens of 70 inches or more. From an interior design aesthetic, curved screens really don't hang on the wall as well as flat screens and the higher price tag for curved screen TVs may be hard for many people to justify.

4K TVs Have HDR

High Dynamic Range (HDR) refers to the detail and colour quality available on these televisions. HDR is commonly used terminology within digital camera use, and photographers using HDR mode find that it provides greater brightness and 4k tv flat panelultimately, more luminous images. The contrasts between light and shade are much more pronounced in HDR mode. This mode allows you to look into dusky or shadowy depths on the screen and actually pick out some of the shapes and forms within the darkness, while the added brightness gives far more life and energy. From the buyer's viewpoint, a TV that is HDR enabled gives a far more lifelike image than has been possible to date. Most 4K TVs are also HDR, the benefits of HDR being that smaller screen sizes also provide great viewing, which is not necessarily the case with 4K TVs.

Many filmmakers and TV producers feel that the HDR technology is more valuable than that of 4K. Although 4K gives added pixels, adding dynamic range and contrast to screenings gives people far better viewing experience. The biggest providers of streaming content, Amazon and Netflix, both supply content in HDR. You need a compatible Smart TV to stream HDR from Amazon or Netflix and the available content is still somewhat limited, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Daredevil were all filmed using HDR technology for example. HDR technology is also available at selected Dolby Cinemas which are designed to compete with IMAX.

The drawbacks of HDR are that the technology requires higher levels of storage or bandwidth for streaming, and also where HDR is used indiscriminately the viewer experience can be quite awful as images can look tasteless and tacky.

It does seem that manufacturers are committed to providing the new 4K and HDR technologies in tandem, so you will have a variety of options on content and entertainments available to you. Hisense is one of the manufacturers providing budget 4K TVs with HDR compatibility.

LED

Most 4K TVs feature LED (light emitting diodes) screens which are very thin and can be hung or placed easily anywhere around the home. The LED family of TV panels are part of the LCD group, but LED features better backlighting.  This is because the LEDs will backlight the screen and cut the need for fluorescent backlight systems that are installed in conventional LCD televisions. LED TVs use less energy, so it's an eco-conscious buying decision, but the development of the new OLED TVs may well reduce their market value. If you're considering buying a 4K TV, choosing an LED or OLED screen should be one of the most important factors to influence your decision.

OLED

Organic light emitting diodes (OLED) screens have even better colour, vibrancy and quality, however they are the most expensive 4K TVs currently on the market. OLED technology TVs don't require backlighting as every pixel on screen is a small LED (light emitting diode) in itself. These TVs feature even thinner screens, around 4mm, with even thinner ones currently in prototype. Further advances in OLED technologies may see these screens become flexible or transparent. The OLED technology is also available in 1080 pixel televisions which are hugely popular and will support 4K resolution. Curved, flat, and even bendable televisions are available using this technology and LG is the popular provider.

LG OLED TV

Smart TV, Connections, and Gaming Requirements

Most modern televisions on the market now are Smart, meaning your TV is internet enabled. Smart TVs have the added benefit of a variety of preloaded apps, such as Netflix streaming. Your Smart TV will also allow you to browse the Internet from the comfort of your living area. Each 4K TV manufacturer has different custom layouts, setup possibilities, and controls for these televisions, so make sure to check out what would be easiest for your chosen TV prior to making any purchase.

If you opt for a 4K TV which is not Smart you can still access Smart services by adding streaming boxes such as Roku or Apple TV, while a YouView set top box will give you Freeview and access to Internet TV. Furthermore, connecting your computer to the TV allows you to use the larger screen as a computer monitor. You'll need a HDMI cable or DisplayPort cable to connect your 4K TV to the Internet and take full advantage of all the available Smart content, play games, and access services. Older 4K TVs will use HDMI 1.4 connections, giving you gaming speeds of 30 frames per second which is slower than recommended. Newer 4K TV models require HDMI 2.0, giving 60 frames per second which is the speed most games are designed to run. TVs with DisplayPort inputs are still fairly rare, so being able to game at optimum levels using a 4K TV is still a way off.

If you intend to use your TV for gaming the input lag test results are critical to your overall gaming experience and these results refer to the time taken by the TV to process its response to controllers. As TVs become even more complex and incorporate more features, the time required to perform video processing tends to increase. If you need to buy a 4K TV for gaming you'll want to find one with the best lag test results. At present the faster 1080pixel TVs provide better results in testing for input lag.

Many users feel the advantages of sitting close to 4K TVs when gaming can outweigh other disadvantages as it's like using VR headsets. The main drawback is that it's impossible to view the complete screen at once when sitting up close. This can be a real negative when playing games with critical information bars in corners, like health bars, equipment counters or maps.

4 times resolution of full hdIs it 3D Compatible?

Toshiba is one manufacturer providing a 4K TV with passive 3D capability, what this means in layman's terms is that you'll only need the inexpensive 3D glasses to view films in near cinema quality. Most TVs need viewers to wear the expensive active 3D capability glasses to obtain the best viewing experience on television. As already discussed above, many viewers find the immersive-type viewing offered by larger screens, coupled with the enhanced visuals, to be as effective as 3D TV.

Available Content

There is a large range of content available for 4K TVs, Hollywood films, TV programmes and shows have been filmed using 4K technology for a number of years. Streaming it to devices and downloading is already possible from Netflix and Amazon, but you will require broadband of 15Mpbs or above. You may find some 4K TVs don't yet support broadband of 15Mpbs and above. YouTube has a considerable amount of 4K content and dedicated 4K channels. A number of 4K TV channels are in the pipeline alongside BT Sport Ultra HD which was the first 4K sports channel in Europe. Sky Q box is 4K and allows the viewer to watch and record up to four channels simultaneously. The major problem with this technology in the UK is that many providers still don't give the full HD 1080pixel definitions, therefore, the jump to 4K is a big one. Virgin and Freeview transmit at the reduced 1080i format at present.

4K Blu-ray Players

Available 4K Blu-ray players offer greater storage capacity and more disks are coming to the market as the popularity of 4K TVs increases. 4K disks for Blu-ray are cheaper, as the films were shot using this technology and do not need to be converted.

4K Ultra HD Camcorders

Another useful device to increase enjoyment of any 4K TV is the 4K Ultra HD Camcorder, which allows you to capture films in the greatest detail and with perfect colour and imagery. Professionals have been using 4K devices for a while now and buying your own 4K camcorder gives enables to shoot professional-quality films and photos at any time which you can later watch on your 4K TV device.

Compatible Devices

4K TVs are backwards compatible, so existing Blu-ray players, cable devices and DVD players can be used with these TVs and you will discover the viewing experiences are enhanced. To really make the most of your new TV it's recommended to opt for the latest devices, Blu-ray players, camcorders and associated disks.

Downside of 4K TVs

4k hd tv sony

Expense is the major downside of 4K TVs at this moment, they are becoming more affordable but you should consider all features carefully prior to making a purchase. The development of HD TV took around ten years to become mainstream, however, it's unlikely 4K TV will take so long to become established. One major drawback of 4K TVs is they use up to 30% more power than typical high definition TVs. This could amount to a considerable surge in utility prices over the long term and is an important consideration for any consumer with energy efficiency and environment concerns. It's important to make a number of checks and look at reviews before buying any 4K TV because the available quality of so many top of the range 1080 pixel TVs is higher than ever before for modern consumers. The TV market is fast paced and 4K TVs are still very much in their infancy, but increasingly available and becoming more affordable since 2015.

Best Time of Year to Buy 4K TVs

The marketplace for 4K TVs is developing at this moment, with more models released constantly and falling prices. When newer models are released to the market, discounts are highly likely on older versions. You need to weigh up the pros and cons of buying a new device which will likely have better streaming and content compression features against the purchase of a substantially cheaper model that is already outdated in many ways. First generation 4K TVs from Philips and Samsung are already in need of replacement tuner upgrades, while other providers need to make firmware fixes to maintain the colour quality of devices and keep them at standards offered by the newer TVs. Trials are already being conducted on 8K TVs, which is likely to be the next popular device launched to the market over coming decades.
