Has anyone received theirs yet? I am hopefully one of the March preorders (still says delivery by Friday) but not sure if it will come!
mine says due by 28th of April. I think they're struggling with stock mostly, believe they will honour as I've already had the game come.
Thanks, mine was due today and was delivered today. I just had no faith that it would after all the negative feedback I have seen about them, but I have a Switch and Zelda on the day they promised!
Mine was dispatched today - no tracking though.. Did you receive any? Thanks :)

* Nvm found my tracking information for the Zelda game, and the supplier didn't update who it was with until 8 hours later.. so I guess I just need to wait :D

To be honest I like the idea of using this as home storage. currently everything is out on the tv stand and the cat went nuts the other day and knocked the controller off. I could bundle everything away safe and sound and not have to worry (cheaper than buying a new tv stand and less hassle than trying find somewhere different to put it :D )
This has to come into stock before June surely....
The only problem with this case is that it basically tells everyone you pass in the street that you are carrying a Nintendo switch! Not a problem for me but not sure letting kids out with this would be wise :) it looks great though.. need to get the switch in my life soon :/
Excellent details!

I ended up buying the links tunic starter kit from game.co.uk for £29.99 as they've sold for £60+ on eBay. They must of sold out at some point but are in stock now as mine has been despatched already.

That blue back looks hideous. The black BOTW looks way better
I'd disagree as I'm not a fan of the standard printed case. The rubber part on this one is what I prefer on a case. Different tastes are a good thing though.
Did you get the matching brolly with it? https://cdn4.thegrommet.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/600x450/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/s/k/sku_vinrella_blueaztec_open.jpg

Well, if you class April as summer, then "yes" and "yes". What's your point?
No games ? And one I was looking forward to in April sorry is a wii u game very poor from Nintendo

Well, I'll be getting it even though I played it on the WiiU. And I would imagine loads of Switch owners did not own the WiiU - so a new game for them. Lego City Undercover is also out next month. You've also got I am Setsuna - a very good old school turn based RPG, like early FF/DQ. Be hard to believe at the end of next month after you've got through that lot that there won't be some more games in the pipeline.

Having said that, all the above games are overpriced imo. But there are games avaliable nevertheless.

Name ANY console which launched with a dozen or so 'must play' games...

Who said a dozen?

2 or 3 would do....

Even the most loyal Nintendo fan can't be pleased with the launch line up.

Especially when you look at the planned titles - it's the weakest launch I remember - certainly from N64 on anyway

yeah ps4 launched with angry birds, just dance, killzone and of course awesome Knack

Annoying having my news filled with Japanese articles though. Enough for me to remove the Japanese account
Did it actually remove the Japanese news from the feed?
I was wondering this too as I might change the account over to a US one - as I can't read Japanese anyway and I thought Tetris was dull and Monster Quest was a bit button-mashy.

I've read it won't get rid of it even if you delete the account!

Why the hell is so expensive?? I'll stick with my pair of joycons and wait for a price drop. Not like anything apart from Zelda or MARIO at the moment
Since posting this there has been a third party teardown which included a separate pricing estimate for the joy cons - they estimated $45 each, making $90 for the pair. A number of different sites have reported on it, like here http://www.polygon.com/2017/4/5/15195638/nintendo-switch-component-cost-estimate

...As for Splatoon on the go, we have 38mb up n 2mb down, still get lag -and that's why I don't play it.
Do you really believe you'll be able to play a game so heavily reliant on internet speed anywhere?
Love the game but lag takes the fun out of it...
You will find that internet speed is not actually the problem here, you could be playing with 1Mb/s and still many online games would work fine. Anything over 5 or 10 means your problem is elsewhere. The usual problem these days is latency so either you should reconsider your ISP or you need to revise your setup (especially since most Wii U users connect wirelessly). Either way... you're barking up the wrong tree.

It's wired... brought specifically for the lag issue.
Ping of 20-28ms on Rocket League.

Time will tell, there's a demo run of Spla2n soon; I already know the headlines...

Rather wait 12 months to see how switch does and them to iron out faults. Have a good roster of games by then too.
Have the same plan.
It's either a Switch for the kid's Christmas or a PS4 pro... and you can guess which console I'm pushing for more.
"Look son, big robot dinosaur thingies!"
F*** Nintendo.
Bet any kid would prefer this tbh, It's perfect for kids to play splatoon 2, and Mario kart on with their friends. Without taking over the TV for hours.https://media1.nin-nin-game.com/59245-pos_thickbox/nintendo-switch-nintendo-switch-carrying-case-with-screen-protector-switch-.jpg
Heard of game streaming?
It's a nifty feature that frees up the tv.
Can be done in a number of ways.
We currently use a laptop for his XB1.
Think you can stream the PS4 to the vita; will know more closer to Christmas. ;)
The point is you don't need to stream to play amazing games like Zelda that a Vita could not even hope to run. And you can take Switch out with you and play it anywhere in the car. On holiday but vita needs to be in range of a very high speed wifi connection at all times to stream without horrible lag! Wait until you have a switch in your hands and play Zelda a couple of hours you will realise this thing has potential that's off the scale! It's the most powerful handheald console ever!

You're pushing this off the back of a single franchise without realizing people's taste.
Haven't liked a Zelda game since the Snes.
We have Splatoon, SSB and MK8, I can't even remember the last time the Wii U gamepad was charged.

Love the game but lag takes the fun out of it.

Back OT: voted cold, it's a pad that halves for less control.

Yeah its totally been rushed as the Wii U failed! I wish they had just made a regular console with Current gen graphics like the PS4....Imagine Zelda with Horizon type graphics! Would defo sell more than what the Switch is going to sell overall!...........

Didn't realise the switch had a plastic screen, shame on you Nintendo, where is the Gorilla glass? How much more would've it added to the cost?
Glad I flipped my day one grey edition now.
They didn't use Gorilla glass because it can shatter when dropped(and plastic is cheaper no doubt). The Switch was intended to be a kids device as well, and they'll likely drop it a lot. Plastic is less likely to break when dropped.
The downside is it scratches easy. Which don't get me wrong, sucks. However I can totally see why they made the choice that they did. Especially considering the main reason Gorilla glass is used on phones is because people put them in their pockets near keys and other things which could scratch the screen. You aren't going to be doing that with the switch.
Ive had mine since Sat as GAME were late shipping my order! Never ordering ANYTHING from them again. Loving Zelda, I have unfortunately found a 1cm scratch on the SCREEN on Monday!!!. (I have only un-docked the console 2-3 times) I could go mad.....Screen protector is a must! Just annoyed that I have to shell out another £10 for something that should have came in the box. At the end of the day, it's the dock thats causing this issue!
Yeah, the dock seems really poorly designed. I can't believe they didn't catch it in testing really. Mind you I think the Switch launch seems a bit rushed personally anyway.

I saw an image of one person who literally just sawed the side off to get rid of what's scratching the screen, lol. One solution to the useless design.

It's a Nintendo console. Of course it's designed around kids as well.

The SDXC cards are not supported by the Nintendo switch yet
SDXC is supported by every device on the planet that has a hole for it and was released in 2017. Never write this nonsense again.
As the standard was only released in 2009 I strongly doubt that.

Technically, that's true but you're really talking about very old devices / cameras that might have a compatibility issue. For a 2017 Nintendo Switch (or indeed, anything released in the last few years), there really shouldn't be a problem.

Mine was just sent. Pretty happy to be receiving it 3 weeks earlier than they said. It's kind of expected though, you get it as soon as they have stock, regardless of what the placeholder date is.
Has anyone received a Switch from Very?
I got my unit from argos but have since seen this deal.
If I order this, provided it arrives within 30 days, could I return the new sealed unit from very back to argos to get my money back from them?
I don't think argos would price match or anything with it being a special offer would they?
Does argos check serial numbers or the consoles or anything? Thanks!
Its for new credit accounts. I had a very account but upgraded to a credit account to get this deal. Was a bit weary given the bad news stories about very, but let's hope it goes through ok

i got mine today from this deal, well packaged and working great. i was lucky as the email came through i ordered straight away.
My order was confirmed 12:48 so yours was before me but I did the premium delivery. So stock must of been very low.
They're telling me on twitter that there was no stock, although I do not believe that considering how early I ordered.
Sorry to hear others didn't get it. That's why I did premium delivery as it adds the extra chance to fulfil. However a certain person missed the delivery today so have to collect it tomorrow now..

Everyone thinking of buying this heap of junk need to watch this vid...https://youtu.be/Cb-srOfRqNc

Considering PS4's, PS3, especially first edition xbox 360 has loads of issues at launch then there consoles are all heaps of junk too then, since when they first launched they had MANY problems (360 especially, the number of red rings of death was insane in comparison)
cold, not a deal just because its "in stock" its just RRP.

great set of comment from people won't don't actually have one.
I'm enjoying mine, no problems and looks great in handheld mode. Shortage of titles is a bit of a downside but should be sorted in time. Zelda will last me ages anyways seen as I have a job, family and well.........a life so only get short plays at a time.

People do not need to own one to have valid criticisms if it.

Do Smyths deliver on release day? That's the only reason I chose this Base deal over that
Price is now £35.85, but ordered. Thanks
Excellent price. Just ordered for store collection. Amazon charging £10 more. Seems Amazon quite expensive for Switch games at present

Do base charge upon order or when they ship?

OOS for delivery and collection near me
I posted this one but from Game with same price, and it went hot rather than cold. Just luck I guess :( heat added :) I almost bought it instead of my case and wish I had now that I seem to be taking the console to multiple places every week :| oh well!
just to add, i got the bag and whilst its great, theres no compartment made to hold your switch cartridges. bit of a shame.
The bag itself is tiny. It would NOT fit a ps4. I thought it would be the size of the official blue one for my wii u but it's at least half the thickness.

GOTY or not, £48 for a standard edition of a game is not a good deal.
It's RRP in retailers like Game is £59.99, considering you're saving £12 seems like a deal to me.
......
I really don't get this reasoning. That is not my problem. Nintendo are nothing special. They make videogames like everyone else. I'm not willing to pay extra for something just because it's attached to a supposedly premium brand. £48 is too expensive for a standard edition, whether it's from Sony, MS or Nintendo.
I'm just posting this up as it was cheaper than the current cheapest listing that was on this site beforehand. I don't think it's unreasonable to post it.

Being cheaper than the current cheapest listing also wouldn't automatically make it a good deal though. £200 for a bag of potatoes is not a good deal. £100, even though it is half the price, is still not a good deal.

I have no objection to you posting it, but I'm still going to vote cold on any deal for a standard edition of a game that's priced at £48. This is nothing personal BTW, I just have the same standard for Nintendo as the others.

The game itself is sold out nearly everywhere at this point

This isn't HotUKStockAlerts, there are already sites for that (though a separate section on HUKD might be handy, rather than cluttering up the deals section with these stock alerts).

which tells you that most people don't think it's a rip off and I'm sure there's at least one person who found this post helpful.

Did most people pay £60 for it? How do you know they didn't think it was a ripoff? A person could begrudgingly buy something because they couldn't find it anywhere else and still think the price was a ripoff.

As for the last part you quoted, thats your opinion that Nintendo are nothing special but they've sold more console units than any other manufacturer so the stats would disagree.

Nintendo have been in the game for far longer than Sony or MS, and also sell handhelds which are cheaper than home consoles, so it's not surprising that they've sold more. That doesn't mean that they're special, or that people should have to pay more for their products.

20% off of a brand new game isn't a terrible deal

I wouldn't say 'terrible', but £48 is a bad deal for a standard edition of a game. New PS4/XB1 games typically get heat for around the £40 price. There is absolutely no reason why Nintendo games should be treated any differently.

it's not my problem you disagree with that.

I didn't say it was. I'm simply giving my opinion on why this is not a good deal. -184 suggests I'm not alone in this opinion either.

Why are you even looking at Nintendo products on here if that's your attitude anyway?

I didn't say I don't like Nintendo products. I want them to succeed as much as anyone, as the more competition there is, the better. I'm probably going to buy the Switch eventually if it drops in price and enough good games are released. I have zero brand loyalty though. A bad price is a bad price, regardless of the company.

If you're a Nintendo consumer then you know what to expect in terms of pricing for software.

I am not one to just sit back and accept anything that a company throws at me :). If a deal is posted for BotW for a bit less than £40, then I will vote it hot.

Something being cheaper than a ripoff RRP does not automatically make it a good deal.

Remember xbox one and ps4 games were more than £39.99 when they first came out

And they wouldn't have been good deals above £40 either.

The Switch is a new console, its also Nintendo, if you look at any Nintendo first party game, they retain their value for years. Nintendo games have almost always been more expensive to begin with.

Try unplug your router for a minute, hard reset the switch (fully turn off), and turn both on.

I just read elsewhere that some bright spark already has the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller working on PC!
Great news, the pro controller looks a really well made controller, just a pity they didn't bundle it. I have the official pro controller for the wii u and find it a really well built comfortable controller with epic battery life, just a pity it gets so little use as some games just ignore it and will only work with the gamepad and I don't think there is any PC compatibility though admittedly I've never tried it....
Your comment served to inspire a thought here of a similar nature. I have Dolphin set up on my PC and it's been great to be playing GameCube games using original controllers for that console connected via the Wii U & PC USB adaptor that Nintendo helpfully released. I managed to get the Wii Remote working with it too. It's great to be playing my old GameCube and Wii games displayed at higher internal resolutions than the actual consoles output.

Anyway, your comment reminded me that I have the Wii Classic Controller and the pro version in gold colour that came with GoldenEye on that console. They're up in the loft gathering dust but if the Wii Remote works with Dolphin then there seems no reason for why said controllers shouldn't work too. Time to get up in the loft to retrieve them!

As for Switch Pro Controller, it's great that somebody already has it working with PC but I'm not sure I'll be buying one given that Nintendo incredulously managed not to feature analogue triggers on it just like they failed to feature them on the Wii U GamePad before it. It boggles the mind that a company with such a proud reputation for innovative controllers could have dropped such a standard feature.

P.S. To your query, I just Googled 'wii u pro controller pc' and it appears that it's entirely possible to use said controller with PC. :)

I've no interest in that, sorry.
No worries. It's nice having options, though. I'll very likely buy the game for my Wii U but if its price remains as obscenely high as we've seen thus far then the option to play it for free on PC with far superior graphics could be tempting.

Played the demo last night had a good laugh and enjoyed it and have now purchased the full game. It's great fun especially multi player.
What post #21 says is not true.
This is classic only on a Nintendo gaming it's unique, fun and brilliant.
That's why it's worth my money <3
looks like a 69p iPhone game.... But because its on the switch it makes sense for it to cost way more.
Can not get that offer
Question, is Nintendo still limiting demos? I recall the Wii U demos having a set amount of tries before they lock it.

Same thing on the Switch?

it writes to every part of the card and then reads from every part of the card to ensure that of it says 128GB then it is 128GB etc.

Yes, it is pricey. I get that it's a new console, has fancy rumble etc, but come on, near enough £60? They're having a laugh.
The dualshock 4 was £55 on release (at least it was at GAME, not sure there was much cheaper about).
No doubt that this will come down steadily in the same sort of way.

It won't be long before this is £10 no doubt, just like Nintendo Land. :)https://charts.camelcamelcamel.com/uk/B00844QZCQ/new.png?force=1&zero=0&w=725&h=440&desired=false&legend=1&ilt=1&tp=all&fo=0&lang=en

Yes in over a year according to that graph ...
This is the best price right now and the lowest its ever been with prime. Given time, everything will lower in price, but that's not the point. I want it now. Heat.

Come on man. Why put this up? Price of this game will sink in a matter of weeks.

Think it will be months instead of weeks but yes, lots of Switch R.R.P. (or near enough) "deals" at the moment.

They oversold stock apparently. I've had to cancel 2 of my orders.
They're also selling snipperclips for £15.95 (after the 5% discount). It's not quite as big a saving (£2.05 vs £2.21) but it might work out better for anyone who isn't likely to use the extra credit :)

Sorry to be useless, but I've never had any luck with these CDKeys deals.
I've 'Liked' their Facebook page but the extra 5% off never seems to show up for me. Should I get a code from somewhere? Can someone describe exactly how these deals work?
Nice post, btw. Thanks.
you have to make an account and be signed in for it to work
And just to be clear, you 'Like' the FB page, but I believe have to use a desktop browser to see the link on the left of their FB page that says "Click here to get 5% off", which will ask for your email address iirc. Then you'll see the promo code.

cdkeys have £25 eshop credit for £22.80 (after the 5% discount) so that could work out as a bigger saving for anybody who thinks they're likely to buy more digital games.
May have to purchase at this price. Thanks OP!

The Switch is a bloody expensive prospect isnt it!
No it's the 4th cheapest console of all time. People seem to think these companies are charities and shouldn't apply inflation.
Hmm, you say this, and yet, the total price of entry with all relevant accessories (example in question: a controller that is more fitting within the mold of home consoles).
So let's say you get the Console, and 1 of these for more traditional gaming experience in the home, that's £335. Add a game into the mix (£40 average) and we're hitting £375. Now, I'm not saying this is TOO bad, although the gimmick of being able to play anywhere and sacrificing performance will probably fade fairly quickly, BUT there are a few other accessories that you can pick up for a smoother/better experience.
Not saying the console is bad, just seems pretty expensive. Especially considering price of entry on a PS4/ONE is now around £200 if you get a good deal.
So the cost of an ipad then, that many kids demand and get gifted for xmas then still end up aspiring to have more involved gaming experiences.
Not sure I'd try to convince parents of kids under 14 that a PS4 is more suitable because it's cheaper
and as a young adult I always bought Nintendo consoles to compliment the PC and Sony consoles.

Fair point, suppose I'm not seeing it from the perspective of a parent though. Seeing as the console is targeted at hipster youth in all the advertising, the assumption is that adolescent - adults are the main target group to begin with - they're the ones with the income, who respond to advertising.

Besides, kids of all ages have home consoles, and there are games available for all age groups. Let's say you bought your kid this device, and they lost one of the joycon controllers - that's probably £30-40 minimum to replace, and you'd better believe it would happen.

Outwardly, Nintendo is a 'kid friendly' brand - but it isn't the kids buying the Switch for BotW - it's adults buying it for themselves. So, as an adult gamer, the Switch is most definitely an expensive prospect when all things are factored in to give you a traditional home gaming experience.

Then again, most consoles start expensive, so let's just hope Nintendo get some decent bundles at a more competitive price pretty soon.

nintendo switch logo Introducing the Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch arrived on March 1st 2017. After years of anticipation, the successor to the popular Wii U had finally arrived, but has it lived up to the hype? There’s no doubt that the Switch is an imaginative, ground-breaking gaming system, with a completely revamped controller and some of the best motion capture systems ever seen.

This buyer’s guide should help you decide whether the Nintendo Switch is the games console for you, and how to find the biggest Nintendo Switch savings.

Nintendo Switch: Impressive Entertainment at Home and On the Go

Nintendo has been releasing home entertainment products for over thirty years. Starting with the Game and Watch in 1980, they released the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985, the handheld Gameboy in 1989, then the Super Nintendo (SNES) in 1991. The Nintendo 64 followed in 1996, the Gameboy Colour in 1998, then the Gameboy Advance and the GameCube in 2001. But it was the unveiling of the Nintendo Wii in 2006 that really laid the foundations for the Nintendo Switch.

The Wii Remote was the first mainstream system to offer motion capture technology, enabling users to play tennis or join virtual exercise classes. It was followed by the Wii U in 2012, which refined the technology, making it more powerful and rivalling Sony and Microsoft’s systems in terms of graphical power.

Finally, in 2015 Nintendo announced that the Wii U would be replaced by the ‘NX’. It took a further two years of refinement and development until the Nintendo Switch arrived, representing a blend between handheld and home-based gaming systems that had never been seen before.

How Does the Nintendo Switch Work?

What do Nintendo mean when they say that the Switch is a hybrid system? Isn’t the Switch just another games console with a handheld controller that hooks up to your TV screen?

Actually, it’s quite different. The Nintendo Switch has three main elements that make it unlike any other home entertainment console.

The console itself is the first element. This can be hooked up to a normal TV and used like a Wii or a PlayStation. However, this isn’t the only way it can be used. If you want to use it with your TV, you can attach the console to the second element, the docking station. But it can also be used like a tablet anywhere you like (though you’ll need to charge it periodically).

The third element in the Nintendo Switch package is the Joy-Con controller. This peripheral isn’t like anything gamers have seen before. The standard direction pad and buttons are familiar, but the way that the Joy-Con attaches to the side of the console is less ordinary. By attaching the Joy-Con, users can turn the mobile console into a gaming tablet of incredible power. At the same time, the Joy-Con is adapted for wireless control and motion capture, and provides some of the most impressive tactile feedback yet experienced. It can also be connected to a grip accessory, turning it into a normal gamepad. It’s an impressively versatile piece of engineering.

Nintendo have come up with three different ways to use their console, all of them with different needs in mind:

  • TV mode - With the Switch attached via an HDMI cable to any standard flat screen TV.
  • Handheld mode - With the Joy-Cons attached to the side of the console, allowing you to play your favourite games wherever you go.

By now, the hybrid nature of the Nintendo Switch should be fairly clear. For the first time, a system can be played on large flat-screen TVs, both with wireless motion capture controllers and standard gamepads, or taken around the home as a mobile tablet. In theory, this makes the Switch a promising gaming platform and a worthy successor to the Wii range, but do its specifications back up the imaginative thinking that created it?

How Does Nintendo Switch Online Work?

Using the Nintendo Switch also has an important online element: The Nintendo Switch Online Ordering Service which arrives in autumn 2017, with trials starting from March 2017.

If you intend to enjoy multiplayer games on your Switch, this is the service for you. Initially free of charge if you have a Nintendo Account, it will become a paid subscription after formally launching, and you can expect to find plenty of Nintendo Switch Online offers at HotUKDeals when this becomes a reality.

Additionally, Nintendo Switch Online features a few bonuses for users to sweeten the deal. For example, it will feature a smartphone app, enabling users to organise gaming sessions with their friends. You will also get a free SNES or NES retro-download every month, as well as exclusive offers on Nintendo Switch content; so it will probably be worth signing up.

Nintendo Switch: Basic Specifications

As with all gaming systems, hardcore players will want to know a little about what’s inside the Nintendo Switch before handing over any cash. With that in mind, here are some of the key specifications:nintendo switch console

  • Dimensions: 10.2 x 23.9 x 1.39cm (when the Joy-Con controllers are attached to the sides of the console)
  • Weight: 297g
  • Screen resolution: 1280x720p, capacitive touchscreen
  • Screen size: 6.2 inches
  • Memory: 32GB
  • CPU: Customised NVIDIA Tegra processor
  • Connectivity: Wi-fi IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.1
  • Max video output: 1920x1080 at 60 fps (TV mode), 1280x720 (Tablet mode)
  • Connections: USB type-C, Stereo out, HDMI, Nintendo Switch game card slot
  • Battery life: Over 6 hours, with a 3-hour charging period

These specifications compare well with other consoles on the market, although Nintendo haven’t been forthcoming with detailed information about the CPU and GPU speeds. For example, the PS4 Pro has 8GB of RAM, well below the Nintendo Switch (and weighs about 3.3kg - much heavier). The only shortcomings of the Switch tend to be in terms of graphical performance. You can expect the PS4 Pro and Xbox One S to outperform it when handling first person shooters and other demanding titles. However, as these aren’t a staple of Nintendo’s range this probably won’t be a deal breaker.

What Nintendo Switch Bundles are Available?

Nintendo hasn’t just released its innovative new console onto the market on its own. Buyers can choose between a range of different bundles when making their purchase and it’s important to choose one that fits your budget and needs. Here are the major options:

  • The Basic Nintendo Switch Bundle - Comes with the Nintendo Switch console, the docking station and the Joy-Con controllers, and is available in grey or with blue and red Joy-Cons.
  • Legend of Zelda Bundles - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the most exciting Switch releases, and is included in bundles of its own. If you want to save money on one of the console’s leading games, it makes sense to purchase a themed bundle which will often come with extra controllers and accessories like carry cases and screen protectors.
  • Mario Kart Bundles - Mario Kart Deluxe 8 is another exciting title (and great for families who want a fun multiplayer game to start with). Again, you can find bundles with extra controllers, which may be a good choice if you have a large group of children (or friends) who will want a piece of the action.
  • 1-2-Switch Bundles - 1-2-Switch is a great introduction to the features of the Joy-Con controller, as well as being a lot of fun. If you want to get the most out of your console and learn the ropes quickly, a bundle featuring the game could be just what you need.zelda breath of the wild

Always remember to shop around for bundles before making a purchase. Just because titles are bundled with the console doesn’t mean that you are guaranteed a good price. Often, you’ll find that buying the basic console is far cheaper. Then, by hunting around at the HotUKDeals listings, you can find cut-price deals on games like Zelda or Mario Kart, allowing you to pay far less than you would for normal bundles. So shop smart, and don’t be impulsive. You’ll probably find deals for the products you need if you look around.

Highlights from the Nintendo Switch Gaming Range

One of the key things about any console is the range of games available for it. But how does the Nintendo Switch measure up on this score? There are certainly some exciting games either available or on the horizon. Here are some of the favourites right now:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Zelda is a beloved Nintendo franchise and one of the most famous RPG series in history. The most recent incarnation sees Link battling against nemesis Calamity Ganon across a massive game world. In Breath of the Wild, Link has more terrain and dungeons to explore, more people to meet, enemies to vanquish and quests to complete than ever before. Universally praised, it’s one of 2017’s essential games and you can only purchase it for the Nintendo Switch or the Wii U. It’s a great reason for non-Nintendo owners to invest in a Switch. However, if you are a Wii U owner, there might be less urgency. Both versions are graphically similar and offer the same vast game world.
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Mario and Luigi have been locked in racing contests ever since the first Mario Kart emerged for the SNES in 1991, and every version has offered new features and innovations. The 8th version was actually released for the Wii U in 2014, but Nintendo have produced a ‘Deluxe’ version for the Switch with extra courses, vehicles, weapons and a new battle mode.
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - A gaming sensation since its release in 2011, Skyrim is coming to the Nintendo Switch and promises to make the most of its immersive controls and mobile gaming capabilities. Now, when you enter the Elder Scrolls universe, you can continue to play whether you are on the beach, on the train or in your bed. With months of gameplay on offer, Skryim will surely be a Nintendo Switch essential.
  • Super Mario Odssey - One of the Top games is another exclusive title to the Nintendo Switch. In Super Mario Odyssey, Mario leaves the Mushroom kingdom and explores in sandbox-style the Nintendo world.

Super Mario Odyssey: Trailer

Those are three of the most eagerly anticipated Nintendo Switch titles and more are in the pipeline, including strategy games like Constructor, platformers like 1001 Spikes, and racing games like Fast RMX. However, while there’s a long list of scheduled releases, the actual selection of Nintendo Switch games is very small. Beyond Zelda and 1-2-Switch, very few games have been made available as yet, leading to sharp criticism of Nintendo’s development policies.

When the trickle of games becomes a flood (mid to late 2017), the Nintendo Switch will come into its own, with a focus on high quality RPGs, puzzle games, sports titles and racing games. But until then, it may be sensible for Wii U, PlayStation or Xbox owners to hold off. All their systems have massive game libraries and a continuing stream of releases. Even if they aren’t as technically innovative as the Nintendo Switch, that’s a big plus.

For Wii U owners, it’s also important to note that the Switch is not backwards compatible with your console. This means that your lovingly assembled collection of games won’t work on your new system and you’ll have to wait for new titles to arrive (or keep two consoles working in parallel, a clumsy solution).

3DS owners might also be thinking about making the "Switch" to Nintendo's new console. Should they do so? Possibly, but Nintendo has made it clear that the Switch is not designed to be a 3DS replacement. The 3DS is more compact, has better battery life and is lighter - all of which make it preferable for mobile gaming. So, if you already have a 3DS and only really use it on the move, the Switch won't really make sense unless you have the money and desire to use both simultaneously.

What Kind of People Will the Nintendo Switch Appeal To?

This is the really important question, but it’s not yet an easy one to answer. Why not yet? Because the full potential of the Nintendo Switch hasn’t become clear. It could be widely embraced and lead to a revolution in home and mobile gaming, or it could be shunned and overwhelmed by new Xbox or Sony systems.

Assuming the Nintendo Switch performs as well as the Wii and Wii U, it will almost certainly be ideal for families with younger children. Nintendo’s titles are always pitched at younger gamers, with less violence and gore and accessible gameplay. They are also usually excellent multiplayer experiences, making the Nintendo Switch a possible focal point for group family fun.

If you are the kind of gamer who lusts after death matches and multiplayer carnage, the PS4 Pro or Xbox One S could be a better fit. There’s little chance of games like Resident Evil or Call of Duty carrying over to the Switch, or similarly adrenaline-fuelled games being developed.

Graphically, the Nintendo style won’t appeal to everyone either. For some fans, Link and Mario are like members of the family. For others, cartoony visuals and quirky sound effects won’t cut it. Make sure you are the kind of person who is in tune with Nintendo’s aesthetic before making a purchase.

Accessories to Enhance Your Nintendo Switch Experience

One of the important things to recognise about the Nintendo Switch is the importance of accessories. You simply can’t get everything out of the system unless you have a set of Joy-Con controllers, the docking station and the cables needed to hook everything together, and not all of these accessories are included in basic bundles. Here are some vital accessories that all Nintendo Switch purchasers will want to think about:

  • The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller - Essentially a classic-style gamepad, the Pro Controller may be useful for experienced gamers who can’t get to grips with the Joy-Con system. Includes advanced rumble and motion capture technology, making it fully compatible with the latest Switch titles.
  • Joy-Con Charging Grips - This handy accessory allows to clip together the left and right Joy-Cons, and also allows you to charge those controllers during play - ideal for long RPG exploration sessions.
  • Joy-Con Straps - These wrist straps attach to the Joy-Con controller, making it easier to handle and protect from damage during games that rely on motion capture.
  • Carrying Cases - The Nintendo Switch console can be vulnerable to scratches and damage, particularly when you use it extensively as you travel. The Nintendo Carry Case provides excellent padding for users to need to play as they move.
  • The Joy-Con Wheel - This handy controller allows you to place your Joy-Con controllers in a steering wheel which you can then use in Mario Kart Deluxe or other racing titles, adding a whole new gaming dimension.

These accessories aren’t always cheap to purchase. If you buy a basic package, you can easily run up large bills by adding extra accessories on an ad hoc basis, so try to find combo deals or bundles that save money. There should be plenty to choose from at the HotUKDeals Nintendo Switch listings.

How and When to Make Your Nintendo Switch Purchase

If you’ve made up your mind to buy a Nintendo Switch, the next step is the crucial one: finding the very best deals around. It’s easy to pay over the odds for gaming consoles, even from reputable companies, so be careful when you choose your bundle.

The first place to look is the Nintendo website, not to make a purchase, but to double check that the Nintendo Switch meets your needs. When you’re certain that it will cut it, head over to the HotUKDeals Nintendo Switch listings, where you will find the latest deals from the UK’s largest gaming companies.

You’ll see Nintendo Switch bundles from GAME, Currys, Tesco, Amazon sellers, eBay merchants, Very and Smyths - with grey and coloured versions all available to choose from. Check for cheap Zelda bundles as well, as you can save plenty of money by buying the console and the game together.

Remember to search for bundles with the right mix of accessories as well. If you want to play with five people, you’ll need extra Joy-Con controllers. If you intend to spend hours on Mario Kart Deluxe, the steering wheel could be essential. Shop around, wait a few days and see which deals come up. You’ll probably find a saving that cuts the price of upgrading to the Nintendo Switch.

However, you may also want to delay for longer. Black Friday in November is always a great time to find gaming deals. By then the range of Nintendo Switch games will be far higher, while the online multiplayer service will have started up as well. If you are upgrading from a Wii U, autumn could be the cheapest and best time to do so.

Either way, you’ll find a constant stream of the very best Nintendo Switch discounts when you bookmark the console’s HotUKDeals listings.
