It's cheap but you would need to get rid of Windows and put something like Linux on it, otherwise those Windows updates will kill it.

hopper_papa_roac

" 32GB of storage gives you ample space so you can easily store and share your important media and documents." Nope the updates are larger than that so once you add files to the system you wont be able to update windows.

finknottle

£67.99-worth of frustration and regret.

Ive looked at the alternatives and they aren't much better, if at all. So for me this is a decent price for a decent spec laptop. Its ok for a laptop with ability to play older games or newer games on basic resolution

Looks lovely. And with it, one of the things I dislike about Amazon - nine very different product lines in one page, and the reviews amalgamated between them. Not one review appears to be for this model, so you have to go elsewhere for reviews. I know, yadda what should I expect. Anyway, I'm tempted on this. Can anyone tell me a better one for the same or less?

but they ordered a couple for their family just before the show, so should you. the Intel'd Lenovo vs this pile of high tech savage powerhouse of a laptop are pretty much the same. The Acer has a Radeon based GPU which should in theory be better than the jalopy Intel. Where it suffers is the memory bandwidth. Received my Chromebook today. DOA. Won't charge or turn on. (mad) Edit: Contacted both Argos E-Bay and their (3rd party) 'Tech Support'. Argos just want me to return and they'll refund (best option it seems). Their Tech Support offered a repair but frankly I've no faith in them given how (un)thorough they seem to have been with the machine I received. Pity, as it was in good nick otherwise. There was a vague offer of a "possible exchange if something roughly similar comes in" but they couldn't guarantee this or give me a timescale.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. I had it out with them about a Asus GPU free game offer. Their website plus Asus's website showed they were offering the free games, so I ordered. When I came to claim the codes they basically accused me of lying, they removed any mention of the free games from their website and despite me being able to prove that it was there and that it was on Asus's website mentioning their name they wouldn't budge. It was only after I got annoyed and accused them of pocketing the codes that I had someone from management phone me up and I did eventually get the codes. Completely put me off ordering anything from them with a promotional after purchase code. All I can say is screenshot it before you order, upload it to an external website like imgur.

TAZMANUK

Incidentally box assured me they removed this offer due to issues claiming the warranty looks like they only removed for a couple of days until I was refunded, bit naughty after all the issues I faced

TAZMANUK

Bare in mind I had to send mine back due to the obstacles claiming the 3 free years warranty. Acer are not helpful, online chat are aware of the promotion but by email support they are not. On going to claim the 3 free years warranty it asks for a photo of your proof of purchase and photo of serial number. However download the terms and conditions as it's not straightforward as you MUST print off your invoice, cut out the serial number from its box, place this on the invoice, also write in pen your name, email address then take a photo and submit it. But you do not get a notification is your claim has been successful or any email. Also I have just learned this promotion is a 'prize' only first 5000 units get the 3 free year warranty also Acer say it's a third party involved not Acer even though Acer is plastered all over the promotion. Hence sending the laptop back as after 4 days arguing between Acer online chat, Acer via email, Acer customer service via phone and box I had enough. Box as a retailer is fine it's just Acer not helpful at all, and you've got to question if they can handle a simple warranty questions I had to think of their warranty is worth it. It went in my favour in the end as got a Asus fx505g priced matched with AO for £371.00

Yes. The Swift 3 comes with 3 years warranty. Oh, and it is the Swift 3 that is the better colour. I'm not a massive fan of the gold but can deal with it! Reviews by consumers always a little questionable because I suspect most are as ignorant about computers as myself!

Also, comes with 4 years warranty. Don't forget this has been discounted from £800, and it won an award or something. :) You can check out some reviews at Amazon. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-Swift-SF514-52T-Notebook-Multi-touch/dp/B07BQK8V9Q/ref=asc_df_B07BQK8V9Q/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310771254136&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1632021341897384233&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=t&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006886&hvtargid=pla-628014684397&psc=1&th=1&psc=1

EricHitchmo

I'm wondering what people think of these two laptops compared. Normally I'd go straight for the Swift 3, however, the discount on the Swift 5 makes their prices very similar. Unfortunately they both have glossy screens when matte would be my preference but you can't have everything. Acer Swift 3 - £549.99 currys.co.uk/gbu….ds Acer Swift 5 - £599.99 hotukdeals.com/dea…382 Swift 3 gives you £50 Better battery Lack of touchscreen (I'm really not bothered about one on a clamshell) An extra USB 2.0 port Possibly a bit more sturdy? Better colour (not a major deal) Swift 5 gives you Under 1kg as opposed to 1.4kg Better display

ohmygod

Thank you - sound advice. That's what my dad would have said! Too much blooming choice.

highdon

My advice is to not expect for any electronic device to last this long. Also, by the time your son goes to uni, this technology will be well past its time and he will surely be looking to upgrade. Expecting 2-3 years is reasonable, expecting 5-6 years of use is optimistic. Second part of the advice - buy him something half the price now as I can't imagine a 11 year old needing more than being able to play Fortnite and for that you can get a laptop for £300 easily. It won't have a touchscreen but does he really really need it? When he gets older you will have more of an idea of what his needs are and you can get him something more expensive.

Depends on the school - if your kids school uses Google Apps (G Suite for Education) then this could be a good buy. Highlights being minimum virus and slowdown hassle, you can just powerwash it (in the settings) if it's being funny. If they use Office 365 then a Windows laptop might be better. If you do decide to go for any Chromebook you should consider the support life https://www.pcworld.com/article/3109868/why-google-plans-to-stop-supporting-your-chromebook-after-five-years.html as Google will stop pushing updates after that date. Some refurbs look like good deals but then you notice they only have a few years of updates left.

Oos?

Totally agree Sam. The extra £, over the 431 is worth every penny for the extras it brings. Linux apps are getting better with every OS release and now support audio out. Just looking forward to the day when the GPU is also supported.

sam_of_london

Touch screen makes most of difference as Android play store apps work correctly. Also this laptop has usb c not present in cb3 431. Also better cpu and integrated graphics. I used to hate chromebook before but now love them as all Android and many Linux apps started working.

Cheers, that Asus from box is a cracking buy, the others all have a few negatives, like battery life etc, but at least you have got the idea why I posted it, the search was for a friend, who has a limited budget, wants 15.6" or bigger, real IPS FHD and at least an i5 with 8GB of ram for photoshop, might point them to the Box one, as their deal prices do not last long!! <3

It's mostly for FPS shooters where it gives you an edge having faster refresh rates, so basically most eSports titles. Your Pentium 90 game wasn't online or needing critically fast response times I bet.

michty_me

They probably don't. It seems to be the 'in thing' now and getting as high a fps as possible at lower settings. The screen gets good reviews on this model which was what caught my attention and along with the 1050Ti. This laptop is still priced at £949 at PC World/Currys.

xavier.jones

Why would anyone 'need' (or even notice) more than 60fps to play a game unless you were pro gaming? I remember happily playing racing games on my pentium 90 at 20-25fps, it wasn't 'unplayable' or anything. Pretty good deal though as the 1050 ti seems to be able to play most current stuff on decent settings with decent frame rates.
