Can I bring my own food and drink to the cinema to save on costs?

3959018_1.jpg

Before we get into the current offers to get cheap and discounted cinema tickets, cinema costs can steeply escalate when factoring in the price of food and drink. Here is a run down of the respective cinema policy on bringing your own food and drink. Please note this information has been sourced from the providers respective websites, mainly terms and conditions.

Please note Cineworld info has been removed currently as they are preparing to file for bankruptcy - more info here

1) Cineworld- Cineworld allow you to bring your own food and drink but there are exclusions. They have a strict no hot food or alcohol policy.

"We reserve the right to refuse customers entry into the screens with hot food or alcohol bought outside the premises. All our cinemas display the necessary signage, advising customers of this policy.
"

2) Odeon - Allow guests to bring in their own snacks and drinks. However there are also exclusions

"We do not allow the following to be brought in from outside the cinema:
- Heated food
- Pungent food
- Alcoholic drinks

Please be advised the ODEON Islington Luxe & Dine does not allow you to take your own food."

3) Vue -Similar to Odeon you are able to bring your own snacks and drinks but the following is excluded

"Guests may not bring or consume any hot food or alcohol purchased outside of the premises."

4) Showcase cinemas - Yes you can bring your own food and drink with the following caveat

"We do not allow guests to bring hot food, alcoholic beverages and drinks in glass containers into our buildings. We reserve the right to refuse admission."

5) Everyman - Unlike most other cinemas the policy wording on Everyman site suggests you are unable to bring in your own food and drink to cinema, even if this is cold food

"Please note that only food and drink bought within the cinema is allowed to be taken into the screen."

Please note Picturehouse info has been removed currently as they are part of Cineworld and preparing to file for bankruptcy - more info here

6) Picturehouse (part of Cineworld group) - General policy is they allow you to take your own food and drink, with some exclusions

"Yes. As long as it isn’t alcoholic, in a glass container, or hot and/or smelly food, we will allow you to bring it in with you. So soft drinks and quiet snacks are allowed."

7) Empire cinemas- Generally can take cold food, snacks and drinks, more specifically

"Food purchased outside the cinema may be consumed within the auditoria, however we politely ask that this doesn't include take away food (burgers, pizza etc.) and customers avoid anything in glass packaging. In cinemas where we sell alcoholic drinks, these may only be consumed within the licensed area"

8 ) Reel cinemas- Seem to allow your own cold food and snacks but exclusions on hot food and alcoholic drinks

"We generally do not stop customers if bringing their own snacks due to their special dietary requirements but we will not accept in any case hot food and some drinks such as alcoholic beverages."

9) The Light cinemas - Policy wording on the website seems to suggest that only food and drink purchased within Light Cinemas can be consumed.

" Only hot food and alcohol purchased within The Light itself may be consumed on our premises. All our policies and licensing laws will be strictly enforced. We reserve the right to refuse any other food and/or drink and we ask that you respect any decision

10) Curzon cinemas - Policy wording suggests you are unable to take your own food and drink into the cinema

" Please be advised that customers are not permitted to bring outside food and drink into our cinemas, We do however offer a wide selection of snacks, hot food and beverages that you can take into our screens. "

11) Scott cinemas- Appear to exclude all food and drink not purchased from the cinema with the exception on medical grounds.

"Food or drink not purchased from us is prohibited on the premises except on medical grounds, where evidence may be required."

12) Omniplex - Appear to exclude all food and drink not purchased from the cinema

"As with most commercial businesses, restaurants, public houses and so on only food purchased on the premises is permitted to be consumed on the premises. Patrons may be asked to dispose of external food products before entering the premises."

13) Merlin cinemas- Appear to exclude all food and drink purchased from outside the cinema. Their terms state

"Please do not bring food and drink purchased outside of the premises into the screen."

14) IMC (Irish Multiplex Cinemas) - Appear to exclude all food and drink purchased from outside the cinema. Their terms state

"Food and Drink brought from outside of the cinema may not be consumed on the premises."

15) Movie House cinemas - Nothing in the terms around not being able to bring your own food and drink, although does not confirm either.

16) Savoy cinemas - Appear to exclude all food and drink purchased from outside the cinema. Their terms state

"FOOD & DRINKS POLICY - Any food and drink purchased outside of the cinema will not be permitted."

17) The Grosvenor Picture Theatre (Glasgow) - Nothing on the website confirming what their policy is for food and drink. However when you buy a ticket this also includes a complimentary drink.

The typical cinema environment can be stressful for guests with autism, sensory difficulties or learning impairments. Various cinemas hold special autism friendly screenings at selected times. At least once a month Odeon, Cineworld, Vue, Showcase, Picturehouse, Scott Cinemas, Movie House, Imax Playhouse and Everyman show popular films in an autism friendly environment.

Autism-friendly screenings are sometimes called relaxed or sensory-friendly screenings. Adjustments are made to reduce stress and sensory input, such as low lighting and sound, freedom to move and staff trained in autism awareness.

Very good and detailed post. Brilliant effort. If I could I would add heat

I do use the CEA Card myself as a disabled person, the Voxi 2 for £7 is a better deal but restricted to once a month. Thankfully tickets in most of my local Vue cinemas are £4.99 when booked online

A lot of people think the CEA Card can't be used for online bookings when in actual fact they can. You just enter your CEA membership code in the promotion code section. At least this is the case with Vue, I suppose other cinemas may vary

Also, I feel I should mention as many people are uncomfortable about it due to what society has taught us... it is perfectly okay to go to a cinema on your own (edited)

agreed. excellent time and effort spent on curating all the info. hopefully any new relevant info will be added to the main part of the post at the top. In these frugal times, people still like to treat themselves to a cinema trip. With kids it can become expensive.

If people are not going to go themselves, an idea is to treat a neighbour, family member who is otherwise struggling, may not be able to go and treat them to a visit to the pictures. Its not much in the scheme of things but sometimes, a couple hours away watching a movie will just give a persons mind a rest, a chance to laugh, take time away and hopefully help in taking their mind off things for a short while.

Just something to consider. People may be too proud to say they are struggling but i bet if you told your neighbour you've got a couple of 'free' tickets to a movie, im sure they wont say no. That means they're not asking but you're still helping.

    just some thoughts. (edited)

Definitely check if your workplace offers a discount scheme. A lot of big companies do, but don't always make you aware, or make it easy to use.

Ah yeah. During my Kickstart job I think I had access to £4.20 Vue tickets. I don't remember using them but it was through their version of perks at work (edited)

With the Everyman membership and I right in thinking that I could pay £95 and get my 7 tickets, and then take a friend on Mondays and they get in for free as well. This works out at £6.79 a ticket which is less than half the normal entry fee.
